Honestly be pretentious as fuck about the stuff you create. Do a press release for your fanfic updates. Do a Q&A about your webcomic. Make fake merch designs for your OCs. Commission "official" book covers. Very few of us will ever get to a stage where something we've created Makes It Big but even if you have an audience of 5 people plus a shoelace fucking indulge yourself and pretend!! It's the only way to live!!

M's personal - any random yapping

M's drawing - art

M's writing - writing

OdaKida - IM THE CEO OF THEM BTW !!!!

WRITING DETAILS !!!

I will do requests, but if you ever do it might be quite slow, and if there's not enough specifying what you'd like it might be really different to what you'd want. I will write light nsfw (I'm not that good tho, I usually just start laughing and can't bring myself to take writing it seriously) I won't do any kink I'm really uncomfortable with (I think pet play and foot fetishes is really all) and I will NEVER write any romanticisation for sh, suicide, mental health disorders, ped0philia, rap3, SA, z00philia, unhealthy age gaps. Other than that I'll write anything ^^ I'm only good at writing for BSD characters tho, sorry >.< I usually write on my own terms, usually short reader x character things or one shots (if you have more questions js ask ^^)

Drawing details !!!!

I again kinda just draw on my own terms, I would be fine drawing any character tho, and if your character or oc interests me enough I'll most likely draw it anyway. I'm fine with drawing pretty much everything, not heavy gore/nsfw but i can do it lighter. I'm not really sure what my boundaries are tbh, just guess and see if I draw it

WHAT I DO KNOW FOR SURE IS IF YOU TAKE MY WORK AND USE IT FOR AI I WILL BE PUTTING YOU IN A BLENDER, DO NOT TAKE MY ART OR WRITING IT IS MINE >:[

Strawpage :3

I think that's all ^^ sorry it's so long (ToT) ×

localmentallyillwriter - :3 (Odakida is canon trust !!!!)

I wrote up a quick KuniZai ficc <333

Kunikida x Dazai (their relationship can be taken as romantic or platonic ig)

Genre: Kinda angst i would say ???

Synopsis: Dazai misses Kunikida and goes to visit him :(

This one is fine for all to read :D

localmentallyillwriter - :3 (Odakida is canon trust !!!!)

“Oh Kunikida. It’s quite a dull day isnt it.” Dazai purred, his fists clenching the handle of the umbrella tightly, knuckles turned white. It was pouring down outside, rain slapping loudly against the plastic of Dazai’s warm blue umbrella.

“I mean, you know I always enjoyed the rainy weather…but I remember you never did…It always interfered with your plans.” Dazai said with a wry smile, shuffling closer to the grey stone. Dazai carefully set up the umbrella to shield the gravestone, Dazai crawling under it to be protected from the rain. He curled up tight, Osamu’s fingers dancing across the bumpy floor of the rock.

“I wish we could still be together…” Dazai mumbled, his other hand, lightly clutching the red ribbon. He sighed softly.

“Kunikida ?....Why did you have to go ?...That was my dream to die…But I guess after a while you became my dream.” Dazai whispered.

He couldn’t handle the amount of emotions overwhelming Osamu’s senses, his knee’s pressing up close to his body, wrapping his frail arms around his legs. His chin rested a top his knee, small tears starting to slid down his face.

“I love you Kunikida.” Dazai whispered, drowned out by the loud pounding rain, Dazai’s body trembling as his frame was wracked with tears.

Soooo ya !! As you can see, just a short, sweet story, i also drew art for this, but lost SO much motivation halfway and it's so shitty lmaooo 😭😭 I might re-draw it and add it on later

Ok, i did have the art here, but it was actually so embarrassing, that i cried and deleted it. When i make some actual GOOD !!! art i'll actually post it :(

Tips On How to Write Characters with Wings (For both fanfic writers and original content writers)

Tips On How To Write Characters With Wings (For Both Fanfic Writers And Original Content Writers)

So I’ve been reading a lot of fics lately where people are either

A) Putting wings onto canon characters

B) Making OCs with wings

So I decided that, with the influx of people who are writing winged characters (and therefore the influx of errors that come with writing winged characters), I’d make a little thing to help you slap a pair of wings onto anyone!

This is also a bit personal, too, because the MC in my upcoming novel has wings!

1. Know that there are a lot of types of wings to choose from

Tips On How To Write Characters With Wings (For Both Fanfic Writers And Original Content Writers)

Part of being a writer is the desire to take something (whether it be a pre-existing work or an idea in your head) and make it into your own. So, instead of just going with the classic bird wings, why not spice it up a bit? If your character is an angel, you certainly don’t have to stick to the classic depictions of angel wings. Why not give them butterfly wings or dragonfly wings?

Here’s a small list of different types of wings to choose from:

Bat wings

Beetle wings

Bird wings

Butterfly/Moth wings

Dragonfly wings

Note that these wings are for animals who can fly. There are also animals who can “fly” that actually glide, such as sugar gliders and flying squirrels.

Yeah, so the options are pretty limited, but feel free to make up your own kinds of wings that aren’t necessarily based on a pre-existing creature’s wings!

2. Be familiar with the anatomy of your character’s wings and their limits

Tips On How To Write Characters With Wings (For Both Fanfic Writers And Original Content Writers)

If your wings are completely unique, draw them out. A diagram or picture is key when it comes to things like description. I’m not gonna tell you what everything does and give you Animal Wing Anatomy 101, that’s for you to research. Know that there are different types of wings and that they have different uses, strengths, and weaknesses.

3. Never use the full extent of your research!

Tips On How To Write Characters With Wings (For Both Fanfic Writers And Original Content Writers)

Surprise, surprise!

“But wait, Maddy!” you cry, writing utensil in hand and poised to stab me. “I thought we were supposed to were supposed to show our research!”

Well, you are. Technically that’s not wrong. But, readers don’t want to know ALL of it. Over-described wings are sometimes worse than under-described wings; what sucks more than not knowing what a character’s wings look like is having to look up wing anatomy in the middle of the chapter!

Only use the most basic of vocabulary when it comes to describing the parts of the wing. Most of the time, you just have to say “bat wing” or “feathery wing” and the readers get the basic idea. (Like seriously, do you think the readers know what a dactylopatagium brevis is????? It’s a part of skin on a bat’s wing btw)

4. Don’t bring your character’s wings up only when they’re needed!!!!

Tips On How To Write Characters With Wings (For Both Fanfic Writers And Original Content Writers)

Unless your character’s wings can fade away when they’re not needed, wings are a 100% real, 24/7 thing! It’s bothersome when writers mention the wings in one chapter and then only bring them up when there’s a daring escape that needs to be performed! Most of the time, I forget that the characters even have wings at all!

There is also the fact that wings aren’t all pros and no cons. If they’re functional, they’re probably big, and if they’re muscular, they’re probably bulky. If your character is clumsy, they’ll probably knock things over constantly, and if they’re not clumsy, they’ll still knock things over constantly.

Your wings are two (or four, or five, or six quintillion) extra appendages; they’re a part of your character! You don’t have to spend every second reminding the readers that they’re there, but don’t go long stretches of time without even mentioning them.

5. Your character’s wings can be a good way to indicate their mood or to provide for that little bit of description that you think you make be lacking

Why wouldn’t you want to describe the wings? I mean, you don’t want to describe every minute detail over and over again, but it’ll boost your word count a lot more than you think. They can also be used to convey your character’s feelings without explicitly telling the reader! It’s like a new set of facial expressions!

Tips On How To Write Characters With Wings (For Both Fanfic Writers And Original Content Writers)

See? You can tell he’s wary and ready to fight from the movement of his wings! Also he’s crouching next to a dead body but that’s not relevant right now

Here’s a list of wing language (?) that you can incorporate into your story that will not only increase your word count, but will also add to the sustenance of your story!

Nervous

Twitch

Flutter

Ripple

Fold tightly

Fidget

Flap

Angry

Flare

Bristle

Fluff up

Ripple

Beat

Raise up

Snap open

Happy

Flutter

Curl up

Ripple

Wave

Flap

During Battle

Bludgeon

Smack

Bat

Clout

Whack

Kick someone’s legs out from under them

Snap someones neck (only for muscular wings like bat and bird wings)

Problems that may come with having wings

Poke out from under blankets and let all of the cold air in

Stepped on

Get pins and needles from being folded for too long

Squashed on chairs/ in beds/ in crowded hallways

Vulnerable in battle

Molting (for bird wings)

Hope this helped!!!

if you were to ask abby how she feels about chubby women, she’d let the biggest-nastiest-shit eating grin break out across her freckled face. chubby girls? the soft girls? the girls who look away in shyness when you compliment them? the girls who squeal in excitement when you can actually lift them up? who feel like heaven itself when you bring them down onto your lap? those girls?

yeah, abby would tell you that she loves bigger girls. loves being able to handle them, become not many have the pleasure of being able to. she could just... eat them whole.

Awesome Sites and Links for Writers

Just about every writer out there has several go-to websites that they use when it comes to their writing. Be it for creativity, writer’s block, to put you in the mood or general writing help. These are mine and I listed them in hopes that you’ll find something that you’ll like or find something useful. I’ve also included some websites that sounded interesting, but I haven’t tried out yet.

So, please disable your adblock since they use the ads on the site to generate the money to buy the rice.

It breaks your novel into chapters and scenes, helping you keep track of your work while leaving your mind free to create. You can set up deadlines, for instance, and the program’s Work Schedule report will let you know how much you’ll have to do, each day, to finish on time. You can even enter your characters, locations and items and freely organize them into scenes. This definitely sounds like it’ll be useful for NaNoWriMo writers.

thank youu! for responding to my comment so quickly I was just thinking like a sort of childhood friends but the reader becomes a famous actress and sae still a footballer something cute like fluff and maybe a bit of smut but honestly whatever you prefer cause I really love your work and would like to see more of sae but it’s no rush whenever you have the time and thank youu again!!

Ughhh I had so much fun writing this request! I almost never write Sae, so something’s might be out of character, but I hope that you’re happy with what I wrote!

just a flicker - s. itoshi

Thank Youu! For Responding To My Comment So Quickly I Was Just Thinking Like A Sort Of Childhood Friends

cw: childhood best friends! actor!reader! language, angst, fluff, possibly ooc, some brief making out at the end

wc: 1.8k

Thank Youu! For Responding To My Comment So Quickly I Was Just Thinking Like A Sort Of Childhood Friends

Growing up was never easy on anyone. Growing up alongside Sae Itoshi brought even more complications. He was never quite as creative as you. Not as academic. Never as polite or gentle. If you didn’t know him, Sae was harsh. Not intentionally rude, just blunt. It was difficult to get used to if you weren’t already close to him. It was just as much a curse as it was a blessing that you knew him.

When you were little, Sae was one of your only friends. You got along well with his little brother, and he got along well with your big sister. You lived nearby. You went to the same school. Sometimes your sister would have a soccer game before his or on a field nearby. It was almost guaranteed for you to get close to him. You both had finally found someone who was equally as passionate at such a young age. He knew that he wanted to play soccer. You knew that you wanted to act. And you were both exceptionally talented already. You were both considered prodigies by all of Japan. Prodigies tended to be best friends, right?

Best friends tend to be our first heartbreak, though.

When you were both thirteen, Sae broke the news to you that he was going to Spain. You were still processing it as you sat in the back seat of his parents’ car, driving to the airport with him and the rest of his family. You didn’t talk to him at all on the way there. When you got to the airport and dropped him off at security, you told him bye and he reassured you that he’d still text. Then that was it. You watched him go through the line, and he disappeared the moment he passed through.

You didn’t speak to him for four more years.

Despite both of your promises, the years ended up going by without so much as a single word from the other. You cut ties with Rin around the same time. Now, at eighteen years old, you were world famous. You had already starred in several productions and received even more role offers. You were finally where you had always wanted to be, and there was still something missing.

Finally, the dreaded day came where you had to go fly out to Madrid for onsite filming for your new rom-com movie. The entire plane ride over, you couldn’t stop thinking about Sae. Would you run into him? Madrid was a big city, sure, but you were supposed to be there the week of one of his biggest matches of the season. Surely you’d at least see a fan or two.

Apparently you had forgotten who the love interest in your movie was supposed to be. A professional soccer player. You’d be at the goddamn stadium.

The film crew had set up just down the road from the stadium. You were standing there on a break, trying not to die in the heat, talking to one of the crew members. That was when you saw him across the street leaving the stadium. He had his practice bag slung over his shoulder. Of course, with your horrible luck, he noticed you, too. And he just stared at you, unblinking.

“Hey, Mina…? I’m gonna head to my trailer really quick. I forgot a couple of my script pages, I think,” you told the girl you were talking to, never breaking eye contact with Sae. You took a few slow steps back, and then sprinted. When you looked over your shoulder back at the stadium, his bag was abandoned on the ground and he was no where in sight. You glanced back a couple of minutes later to see him running after you through the crowd of actors and crew members.

What the hell was his problem? Why was he following you like a crazy person? Thank god your trailer was nearby, because you knew you wouldn’t ever be able to outrun him. You reached the door just before he caught up to you, slamming it shut, locking it, and throwing yourself in front of it. God, you were out of breath. He was gone, though. You were safe.

The you heard the banging. “Open the door, Y/N.” His voice was relatively calm, but clearly frustrated in his own emotionally constipated way.

“No!” You yelled back at him. Your back was still pressed against the metal door.

“Why?” He scoffed, stopping his knocking.

“Because!”

“You’re the one who stopped texting me, you can’t be mad.”

“Yeah, that’s why I don’t want to see you!”

You could almost sense him freezing on the other side of the door. “Did you just start hating me the moment I was gone?”

You froze, too. “What? No, that’s not… that’s not what I meant, okay?”

“So you’re running from your own guilt?”

That comment made you nearly stop breathing. Somehow, after four years, Sae Itoshi of all people could read you. The only person who was worse with emotions was his brother. How could he pinpoint how you felt?

So you opened the door. And you talked to him. And you got out years of pent up frustration, and confusion, and guilt. You were the one who had abandoned him, after all. You decided that it wasn’t worth it to text him when you knew that he’d be in a completely different country from you forever. Why be friends with someone you could never see? Especially when you were thirteen and just starting to realize that you were in love with him?

You started talking to him again. He texted you every morning and every night and called you once a week. It was structured, and exact, and way too Sae Itoshi. Then eventually he was flying you out to Spain for weeks at a time when you didn’t have filming. After a couple of months, you two were going on dates without ever asking each other out. Then you were going to his soccer games and he was at your movie premiers. Then you were hugging and holding hands without putting a label on your relationship. And suddenly the entire world started to think you were dating Sae Itoshi.

You were starting to think so, too.

Right when you were about to give up again and leave him to figure his own shit out, you caught it. You were just sitting in the box at one of his matches — debating what you would say to him after the game — when he scored. It happened so fast that you could barely process what he did afterward, but you could just barely catch his hand wrapping around a chain he was wearing. You had bought him that.

You could still picture the exact moment you had given him that necklace, actually. It was just a stupid silver chain with a soccer ball pendant you had found when you were hanging out with him one day. You were twelve. Back then, any mention of soccer made you think of Sae, so you thought it would have been a cute gift. His birthday was coming up anyways.

When you handed it to him, all he said was, “You’re weird.” And he shoved it into his pocket.

You never expected him to still have it, though.

The night after the match, you had planned to stay at his place pretty late having a movie night. It was your idea. He went along with it because he didn’t care enough to argue with you. So, you met him outside of the locker room like usual. You had gotten special permission to be in the back area of the stadium by then.

He gave you a small nod of acknowledgment as he left the locker room. You two walked silently beside each other as you left the stadium; you didn’t dare to open your mouth until you reached his car.

“So,” you began the moment the doors had closed and he started the engine. You weren’t entirely sure where you were going with it. “That was a nice goal.”

“Thanks.”

“Cool that you guys won.”

“Yeah.”

And then it was silent again. It was always silent when you were with Sae.

“Were you… wearing a necklace during the game?” you promoted, trying to be subtle enough to not sound crazy.

“I always do,” he shrugged, his eyes completely focused on the road.

You nodded. “Where did you get it?”

He raised a brow in confusion. “You gave it to me.”

“Oh.”

Then you both went quiet again.

After just a few minutes, you had both settled next to each other on the couch in Sae’s living room. The only movie request he had made was one of your most popular ones. In that moment, you doubted you could stand to see your own face in some shitty romance.

It took forty minutes for Sae to look over at you. “Your face is all scrunched up.”

You blinked, meeting his eyes. “Is it?”

“Yes.”

“Didn’t realize it,” you shrugged, feigning indifference as you turned your attention back to the TV screen.

“You’re so clueless,” he scoffed, clearly still staring at you.

You huffed. “Okay, rude.”

“You’re seriously clueless.”

“Stop repeating yourself, idiot,” you threw a piece of popcorn at his face, trying not to grin as it got stuck in his hair.

He rolled his eyes. “You’re an actor. Shouldn’t you be able to pick up on cues without me having to directly tell you something?”

“What do you not want to tell me?”

“I’ve been in love with you since we were twelve and you’ve been too stupid to figure it out the entire time.”

Oh.

You froze completely, not even daring to glance at him. You wanted to run and hide, to bury yourself under forty pillows, to burrow away like an ostrich. That wasn’t what you were expecting. That wasn’t what you wanted. Was it?

No. It absolutely was.

In the blur of you nodding your head, telling him that you’ve felt the same way the entire time, and whatever he had said in response, he had paused the movie and pressed his lips to yours. You had expected Sae to be more rough, maybe a bit ruthless like how he played on the field. Maybe even apathetic like how he presented himself to everyone. But he wasn’t. He was eager. He was hungry.

He placed a hand on the small of your back, gently pulling you closer. His other hand slid from your cheek to the back of your head, deepening the kiss more than you were prepared for. When you recovered from your shock, you moved your hands into his hair. Even with the intensity, he still kept the pace slow. He was still careful. For the first time in four years, he was finally somewhere to could consider home.

Thank Youu! For Responding To My Comment So Quickly I Was Just Thinking Like A Sort Of Childhood Friends

Arcane has had me thinking about this dynamic of what I'd call "found siblings" or something like that.

The trope of "like brothers" or "like sisters" I feel is often translated wrong, or ends up becoming more romantic than inteneded is what I think is the neglect of the tie that makes siblings, siblings.

siblings are tied together by a large, fundamental simualrity that forever will tie them together, regardless of what life brigns them. Sharing the same parents intertwines two indivudals, as well as growing up in the same home, regardless of if you are related or not. This tie is a shared expeircne that shapes a persons deveolpmental years.

Also, what always makes me laugh a bit when I hear the line "they're like my brother/sister" or "We're like siblings" is the fact that most of the time, they NEVER act like siblings.

If you want to have to characters have this "found sibling" relationship, they need to be able to express anger, frustration, and a childish annoyance at the other. Siblings know that regarldess of how much they can be angry and hold a form of hatred for the other, at the end of the day, that person has been in their life so long that there are some things that that person will only understand. It's being close because this person knows too much about you, it's sometimes a resigned love. It's not talking to this person for weeks or months but still knowing every intimate and embarassing detail about how this person's tween years.

Now, I'm speaking from a biased standpoint, I'm not close with my sibling in the way in which we talk with one another every day and are best pals or something. But, they're someone I can call at the end of the day when I need help. We won't talk for a month but if I'm stuck in the ER again because of my chronic health condtion, they'll hang out with me the entire time just so i don't feel lonely.

To write characters that percive one another as siblings, they need to be characters that will always help the other out at the end of the day. They can hate one another, but still come when called. They argue, maybe they don't see each other for months because life just got in the way, but when they see one another, they go back to bickering like six year olds. Sibling dynamics are held together by the fact that they know far too much about each other to stop being friends without it being a liability.

Overall, I feel like what creates a great sibling dynamic is the resigned love both characters hold for eachother. It's an eyeroll and a sigh while reaching out a helping hand. It's disagreeing with all of their choices, but reluctantly saying yes to helping them anyway because at the end of the day, you know them too well, you've seen them at their worst and walking away just isn't an option.

How We Love

*a poem of love from someone who has never been close to it*

You love with the same fervernece Of a starved man who has been Gifted with the promise of food Sitting mere feet away.

You are all bite an snarl, You push and shove To the finish line; Your eyes trained on the flesh In front of you.

I too was hungry. You were not the only one Who was withheld lifes simple Pleasures.

I too was left to chew At the inside of my cheek To slow the decay of my skin.

I know what it feels like To cut away pieces of your body Just to feel whole.

Yet you keep taking from me; Living under the assumption That leaving my skin bitten, broken And bruised, used up from your ventures, Is an act of love, and not one Shaped from your depravity.

When I laid my body bare for you That night while the world screamed Beyond the four walls of your quiet, Cluttered room, I thought you saw how our Eyes where blurred red from the same travasties.

Naivety has always been my downfall.

It was my undoing believing you knew that We were scarred from the same knife--rather, It was careless of me to assume you would hold it in consideration before serrading me once more.

But,

With my body cut open, My blood seeping into your sheets, claiming ownership in the one place you called home, I think the hunger that had been gnawing At my insides, long before you knew me, began to subside.

There is a power in knowing You come to me to feel worthy Of being human again. That it is my body, my being That is the foundation of your Sense of self.

So I will stay quiet while your feast, I will not cry while you dismember me. I will wait, watching red stain creme cotton In a halo around us and build myself From the remnants you left, and hold you While you struggle to understand the fullness.

For this is how I love.

thank you

I was once in a place where no one could hear my screams. My screams were loud once, loud and demanding and begging to be set free.

But they grew weak, growing weaker as my hope to be heard was lost. I was trapped, I didn't know where I was, time did not exist, and I was alone.

My children... my little twins... would they even remember me?

...

There is a small crack beneath my fingers. It feels rough, the first texture I've felt in so long. There is no feeling in the darkness, nothing to cling onto, nothing to cry into.

The crack grows and grows. I see flashes of violet and swirls of red-orange that highlight my palms, the first light in hundreds, thousands of years maybe.

The crack becomes so large that it breaks and two hands reach out in the darkness as the familiar burn of lightning and flames crackle on my skin, illuminating the shadows.

I take them and my screams are released; a small, weary, liberated cry is among them:

"Thank you."

Uh Enjoy This Self-made Book Cover Ig

uh enjoy this self-made book cover ig

Isabela Triplett is my pen name btw

so it's about this girl named Alessia who offers to be one of the empress's galas(don't ask me what this is, I don't know shit) so her family's land doesn't get sold

and basically it turns out she can wield the power of the sun and also there's this giant crystal thingie underneath the palace and also the empress(Badr is her name, remember it well) is kinda sorta falling for her and also Alessia is kinda sorta falling for Badr too but they're both idiots about it because you gotta love that ✧P I N I N G✧

btw there's also this mysterious plague that killed like a third of the empire and now after a couple of years it's back like the Black Death but it's worse

anyway this is one of my many WIPs and I'll release this never probably I dunno

Uh Enjoy This Self-made Book Cover Ig

this is Alessia Bast, the main girl

I drew her myself and I suck at drawing

she's got sun powers, connections to the aforementioned weird crystal and is also maybe fucking the empress?? they're friends with benefits for like two-thirds of the story until Alessia goes oh when Badr is kidnapped by assassins from this rival empire, it's a whole thing

Alessia is something I'm calling a Hakai Guerrier, she's basically Badr's guardian so you could call this a royalty/guard story

Uh Enjoy This Self-made Book Cover Ig

and this is Cahaya al-Rahim, Alessia's *checks non-existent script* best friend whose family got wiped out by the plague and she left for the palace for reasons unknown

she's probs in love with the empress's sister/sibling, I'll get into that in a bit

she's got fire powers and a really cool *checks script* chain whip thing?

Uh Enjoy This Self-made Book Cover Ig

here's the empress herself Badr Merle

she knows a whole bunch about Alessia and her dead family(oh I didn't mention that before? oops) and their history so that's nice and definitely not a device to cause tension and angst

she's like a tired mom trying to control all her lords and keep them from going to war with each other over a fucking festival competition for Hell's sake just hug it out you babies—

Uh Enjoy This Self-made Book Cover Ig

and finally, here is Badr's sister/sibling Mehr who goes by she/they pronouns if you didn't notice(enby ftw)

so Cahaya is something like Mehr's guardian(also a Hakai Guerrier) to keep her safe but somehow it's now the opposite because every time the annual feast/party rolls around, Cahaya gets into an argument with one of the lords and Mehr feels like they want to throw themselves into a volcano

she's also Badr's top advisor and one of two people who can stop their at-times cold sister from full-on killing one of the lords

the other is Alessia and she can do it way better than Mehr if they're being honest

ok I'm done, have a good night/day/afternoon/morning/evening

Learn the Differences Between Novelettes, Novellas, and Novels

Since I am currently in the process of writing a story, but I'm not sure what I want it to be... I'd figure I'd go ahead and share the differences!

So let's get to it!

Writing the first draft of a novel can be a daunting, arduous task. That’s why the novelette format can be so appealing. In many ways, a novelette is like a short novel. It allows writers to hone their craft by learning how to tell stories under a strict word count restriction.

What Is a Novelette?

The definition of “novelette” is any short, fictional work of prose narrative. Novelettes have a lower number of words than a novel or novella, but a higher word count than other forms of prose fiction like short stories or microfiction. Despite lacking the page count of a full-length novel, novelettes generally tell a complete story. Some people refer to novelettes as “long short stories” or “short novellas.”

How Long Is a Novelette?

Any work of fiction with a word count between 7,500 and 19,000 is generally considered a novelette. A novelette is longer than a short story, which usually has a word range of between 1,000 and 7,500 words, and flash fiction, which is usually under 1,000 words. Any piece of creative writing that is longer than a novelette but shorter than a novel is considered a novella.

Three Differences Between Novelettes and Novellas

A novella is a standalone piece of fiction that is shorter than a full-length novel but longer than a short story or novelette. Novellas incorporate many narrative and structural elements of novel-length stories—but like novelettes, they often focus on single points of view, focusing on a single central conflict, and rely on fast pacing. Here are the differences between novelettes and novellas:

Word count: The primary difference between a novelette and a novella, then, is word count (novelettes are shorter than novellas).

Subject matter: Traditionally, novelettes tended to focus on whimsical, sentimental themes. The modern-day novelette, though, is more like the novella in that it can encompass different genres like sci-fi, drama, or historical short fiction.

Complexity: In terms of storytelling ambition, novelettes tend to split the difference between novellas and shorter forms like short stories. Novelettes tend to have a greater focus on character development, worldbuilding, and plotting than short stories. However, the stories are generally more concise and focused than a novella-length work, as the word count is often too restrictive to tell a long story.

Three Differences Between Novellas and Novels

The most obvious difference between novels and novellas is page length and number of words. However, beyond this superficial difference, many structural and thematic hallmarks of novellas make them their own standalone genre of writing. Some of these include:

A single central conflict: Most novellas explore a single, compelling central conflict. Because of their shorter length, novellas have less time to explore subplots and tend to focus on the main plot. Novellas generally have one main character and a handful of secondary characters. Because of length constraints, most of the character development will be focused on the protagonist.

Fast pacing: Novellas usually move at a quick pace. Whereas novels can spend time diverging from the central conflict to delve into backstory and explore multiple points of view, novellas generally offer a quick compelling story with a singular point of view.

Unity of time and place: When writing novellas, writers should root the action in continuous time within a limited space, ideally one location.

Benefits of Writing a Novelette

For short story writers or people who generally write shorter works, novelettes can be an opportunity to tell a longer-form, standalone story. For writers who are used to writing, say, full-length science fiction or fantasy novels, the word count restriction of a novelette offers a chance to tell a good story with a simple cast of characters and few subplots.

Seven Examples of Novelettes

Novelette writers know how to tell a complete story in a relatively short amount of time. Here are some famous examples of novelettes, many of which were originally published in literary magazines:

The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allan Poe (1839)

The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson (1886)

The Metamorphosis by Franz Kafka (1915)

The Call Of Cthulhu by H. P. Lovecraft (1928)

The Little Prince by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry (1943)

Bloodchild by Octavia E. Butler (1995)

Hell Is the Absence of God by Ted Chiang (2001)

I hope this helps! Thank you for still being my followers and patiently waiting for a post!

Basic Writing Terms: Types of Characters

There are a lot of different words to describe the roles that characters play within the narrative, some characters can occupy multiple roles at once, but these terms are not always synonymous. Confusion can occur when one assumes that one term encompasses another with which it is often paired.

These are some terms and a brief overview of how they will be used on this blog.

Protagonist: The leading character. Not necessarily of any particular moral persuasion, can be a goodie, a baddie, or an in-betweenie, depending on the story being told. Can be a group of people either working together, or who inhabit the same narrative.

Antagonist: A person or the person who opposes the protagonist, there can be multiple antagonists for any given protagonist. Does not indicate any particular moral code except that they are in conflict with the protagonist.

Main Character: The leading character. Often in an ensemble cast there is one character who is more central to the story. (Most generic term)

Focalising Character: Characters through which we see the story, their perceptions and knowledge will colour the narrative and influence the reader’s opinions. A story can have one or many focalising characters, but only one can be used at a time (a ‘switching POV’ is a shift from one focalising character to another).

Hero/ heroine: Often a protagonist. Is a character who is explicitly siding with the moral good.

Anti-hero: Often a protagonist. Is a character who is the centre of a heroic narrative while not having ‘conventional’ heroic traits.

Villain: Often an antagonist. Is a character who is explicitly siding with the moral evil.

Anti-villain: Often an antagonist. Is a character who may be explicitly siding with moral evil, but likely has non-villainous motivations or attributes.

Foil: A particular type of antagonist or villain who’s personal qualities compliment or contrast in such a way that they illuminate thematic elements of the protagonist or hero’s character.

Secondary Character: A character who is not in the central protagonist/ focalising character role. Can have significant role/ impact on the narrative, but is not the focus of the narrative.

Minor Character: A smaller role than the secondary characters, may appear only for a few lines, attention to detail on minor characters can help make world building feel more ‘real’.

Narrator: The character who is ‘voicing’ the story. May or may not be a character that is personally a part of the story. (Not all stories have explicit narrators, but all stories have narrative voice!)

Despite the fact that I am not deaf, mute, or blind myself, one of the most common questions I receive is how to portray characters with these disabilities in fiction.

As such, I’ve compiled the resources I’ve accumulated (from real life deaf, mute, or blind people) into a handy masterlist.

Writing Prompt #1200

“Oh, um, that’s an incredibly polite offer, but I don’t particularly think my girlfriend would want me going on a date with someone we don’t know.”

“Oh, I’m so sorry, I didn’t realize that you were—”

“We can put a rain check on it, if you’d like to meet her. We’re always open to getting to know someone new.”

20 Basic Plots

1. QUEST - the plot involves the Protagonist’s search for a person, place or thing, tangible or intangible (but must be quantifiable, so think of this as a noun; i.e., immortality).

2. ADVENTURE - this plot involves the Protagonist going in search of their fortune, and since fortune is never found at home, the Protagonist goes to search for it somewhere over the rainbow.

3. PURSUIT - this plot literally involves hide-and-seek, one person chasing another.

4. RESCUE - this plot involves the Protagonist searching for someone or something, usually consisting of three main characters - the Protagonist, the Victim & the Antagonist.

5. ESCAPE - plot involves a Protagonist confined against their will who wants to escape (does not include some one trying to escape their personal demons).

6. REVENGE - retaliation by Protagonist or Antagonist against the other for real or imagined injury.

7. THE RIDDLE - plot involves the Protagonist’s search for clues to find the hidden meaning of something in question that is deliberately enigmatic or ambiguous.

8. RIVALRY - plot involves Protagonist competing for same object or goal as another person (their rival).

9. UNDERDOG - plot involves a Protagonist competing for an object or goal that is at a great disadvantage and is faced with overwhelming odds.

10. TEMPTATION - plot involves a Protagonist that for one reason or another is induced or persuaded to do something that is unwise, wrong or immoral.

11. METAMORPHOSIS - this plot involves the physical characteristics of the Protagonist actually changing from one form to another (reflecting their inner psychological identity).

12. TRANSFORMATION - plot involves the process of change in the Protagonist as they journey through a stage of life that moves them from one significant character state to another.

13. MATURATION - plot involves the Protagonist facing a problem that is part of growing up, and from dealing with it, emerging into a state of adulthood (going from innocence to experience).

14. LOVE - plot involves the Protagonist overcoming the obstacles to love that keeps them from consummating (engaging in) true love.

15. FORBIDDEN LOVE - plot involves Protagonist(s) overcoming obstacles created by social mores and taboos to consummate their relationship (and sometimes finding it at too high a price to live with).

16. SACRIFICE - plot involves the Protagonist taking action(s) that is motivated by a higher purpose (concept) such as love, honor, charity or for the sake of humanity.

17. DISCOVERY - plot that is the most character-centered of all, involves the Protagonist having to overcome an upheavel(s) in their life, and thereby discovering something important (and buried) within them a better understanding of life (i.e., better appreciation of their life, a clearer purpose in their life, etc.)

18. WRETCHED EXCESS - plot involves a Protagonist who, either by choice or by accident, pushes the limits of acceptable behavior to the extreme and is forced to deal with the consequences (generally deals with the psychological decline of the character).

19. ASCENSION - rags-to-riches plot deals with the rise (success) of Protagonist due to a dominating character trait that helps them to succeed.

20. DECISION - riches-to-rags plot deals with the fall (destruction) of Protagonist due to dominating character trait that eventually destroys their success.

"I didn't comment on a fic I liked because I don't think the author would care or remember my comment anyway". fanfic writer here, I still remember comments I got on my fics from seven years ago. I still think about them and they still make me smile. your kind comments are what motivates us and what helps us keep writing.

I personally know writers who take screenshot and print out comments they got from their readers.

TL;DR comments matter to us writers more than you think. if you like a fanfic, never be shy to let the author know ♡

Kill Your Insecurities

kill your insecurities

I just reada really good fic but halfway through I realized "oh shit this is really familiar.... didn't I write something like this once?" And as I kept reading I kept predicting what happened next and the further I went the more convinced I was that they'd ripped off my story-

like, copied the ENTIRE plot and re-written it, just better than I had? The characters were more fleshed-out than mine were, and the POV was more interesting, and the pace made more sense- but it was MY STORY?

So close to the end I was like "holy shit.. do I message them? Ask if my story inspired theirs? Should I be angry? Flattered?" Cause their tags and description didn't mention me AT ALL, which, sure, it's fanfiction to begin with, but if you're using my work than at least credit me as inspo, right? Just to be courteous?

But I get to the end of the final chapter, and it's not finished, and I'm kind of disappointed cause I never finished my story and I was really immersed in their version now and had been looking forwards to seeing how they tied up my loose ends- so I scroll to the bottom to leave a comment, and.

It's MY URL.

IT WAS MY STORY THE WHOLE TIME.

THE ONE *I WROTE*.

In *2013*.

And FORGOT ABOUT

BECAUSE I WAS SO INSECURE ABOUT MY SLOPPY, SHALLOW, AMETEUR WRITING

And I'm just sitting here now staring into space thinking about every shitty story I've ever written now like

IT WAS ALL GOOD?

I Just Reada Really Good Fic But Halfway Through I Realized "oh Shit This Is Really Familiar.... Didn't

IT WAS GOOD THIS WHOLE DAMN TIME??

I Just Reada Really Good Fic But Halfway Through I Realized "oh Shit This Is Really Familiar.... Didn't

yes get ready for my oc / oc fanfic bitches

You are allowed to write about any character you want.

You are allowed to write your shitty OC.

You are allowed to write entire novels about your shitty OC.

You are allowed to do meme fills for your shitty OC.

You are allowed to play Mary Sue Bingo where your shitty OC wins every row.

You are allowed to continue extending your shitty OC’s life whichever way you want.

You are allowed to say “OC” and not mentally prepend “shitty.”

You are allowed to enjoy this creative process even if the entire output is a fat soggy word count for your unimpressive, inconsistent character.

You are allowed to like writing whatever the hell you want.

But let’s pretend this is about this OC.

You are allowed to give her boyfriends, hobbies, quirks, superpowers, crappy AUs…all of it. Totally available.

You are allowed to write. People who don’t want to read it know where the “back” button is.

Good things that happened today: hit 5k words or so on the KatGaren fanfic first draft

Bad things that happened today: realized I forgot my stellar title for this thing and forgot to write it down

People speak sometimes about the "bestial" cruelty of man, but that is terribly unjust and offensive to beasts, no animal could ever be so cruel as a man, so artfully, so artistically cruel.

Fyodor Dostoevsky
