Sudden writing prompt
God has finally answered the prayers of mankind. To each sufferer (mentally or physically), he bestows a superpower to help solve your problems. Blind man gets X-ray vision, people suffering from insomnia can now control their own and others' dreams and etc. The strength of the abilities depends on the amount of suffering of this person.
MC who really considered themself a happy person receives God-like powers.
And now they somehow have to deal with that.
I need to know⌠whatâs some characters you can ship from two different shows, games, etc and why? Just for fun and sillies, this isnât meant to start anything I just think this is a fun idea to expand on. Iâll go first:
Mel Medarada x Mark Grayson
I think theyâre both hot, thatâs it. Thatâs why
While I am working on the requests I got (yes I didnât forget and I will be posting them soon as in the next few days) I had an idea. How would yâall like a creative exploration into the Invincible Variants being kept alive to try and be used as weapons against viltrumites? This would completely change how the comic goes but đ¤ˇđ˝ââď¸ idk food for thought or however the fuck the saying goes. Anyways au idea, yay or nay?
I need help renaming my story as it's prompted off of the title "white fang" which is already a very famous book
here's some bits in the book's: Frankensteinwhte type experiment gay romance between teen boys animal teeth car crash broken bones desperation
any like ideas on how to create a new title? (also yes my account is named after my writing because i really love it lol)
Yuu's Misadventure in Twisted Wonderland
-
A lonely coffin lay in the middle of nowhere. It was glazed in a black hue, and elegant golden patterns decorated the lid. Along the designs, a keyhole rested in the middle, while a mirror was positioned where the face would be.
Despite being called a mirror, it strangely emitted a dull white light, flickering like a dying firefly amidst the darkness. Then, without warning, the lid rattled loudly.
Thud, thud, thud!
Someone was trying to open the lid of the coffin to no avail. The lid was too tightly shut, barely a crack could be seen, even though the person inside had been kicking and slamming it with all their strength.
That person screamed for help, crying and begging to be saved and let out of this endless darkness. There was even panting inside as anxiety set in, knowing that the oxygen was limited.
And thenâ
Bam!
The lid finally slammed open, and a figure sat up with a gasp, taking in big breaths like someone who had nearly drowned.
Their hair was in disarray, their face messy from crying and sweating. Blood smeared their swollen hands, used to try to slam the door open.
Yuu was finally free.
However, they did not know where they were. There were only trees as far as the eye could see, and what seemed to be a track made by a carriage near the coffin.
Why were they in a coffin? Why was there even a carriage in this place and time? Did they fall off? But then why didnât anyone come to retrieve them? Wait, isn't this human trafficking?
Though baffled and confused by the state they were in, Yuu ultimately decided to seek help and began following the path.
If only they had picked the right way, they would have ended up at NRC, and their new lifeâthough chaoticâwould have been better than the other path. But they were slowly heading somewhere else.
Everything went wrong from there.
Yuu learned that this was not the place they were familiar with. The buildings were colorful, each following a certain theme. The people were handsome and pretty, and their hair had various shades as though dyed, but it wasnât. Somehow, Yuu could sense that it looked natural.
Ironically, Yuu, who looked the plainest, stood out the most among them. The people were alarmed to see a foreign child with dried blood on their hands and a shabby appearance, like a fugitive.
Yuu ran the moment they felt a sense of dread bubbling in their belly. Any attempts at communication failed, not because the people didnât want to listen or understand, but because they couldnât understand each otherâs language.
This was where Yuu learned about magic. In the midst of running away, they were taken off guard by magic that obstructed their movement and, therefore, were taken to the court of the Queen of Hearts.
(Insert drama here. Will it go like Alice in Wonderland or take a different plot? How will Yuu be treated? No thoughts about Yuu being from a different world since they donât understand each otherâs language.)
Yuu somehow escaped. Finally nourished by the food provided by the jailers, they wandered without direction, only stopping to sleep in the wild with no shelter. The fear of waking up in the Queendom of Roses terrified Yuu.
And then, they entered a new placeâŚ
-----
Yuuâs situation involved going to new areas like the Shaftlands, the Scalding Sands, and other regions, encountering all sorts of dangers and predicaments. Some people were kind to Yuu, while others were not.
(Extra points if higher-ranking people, like Leonaâs family or Malleusâs grandmother, take a liking to Yuu. Bonus points if Yuu becomes a therapist or friend to the family members of NRC students.)
Yuu took on different roles each time, often the most difficult ones, like a prisoner, a lab rat, a servant, and more.
Yuuâs luck was atrocious, leading them to some of the hardest places to get into on Twst, like the Briar Valley, the Coral Sea, and the Isle of Woe.
There was even a time when Yuu nearly got taken by the Playful Land and almost converted into one of their puppets. But their luck was also unusually good, as they managed to escape each situationâthough not without suffering.
Due to their time in the wild and the language barrier, Yuu became a bit feral.
Their final destination would be NRC, where Yuu showed pure animosity toward Dire Crowley. They also met Grim in the wilderness before attending NRC. Because of Yuu's personality, Grim reluctantly became their pet therapy companion and was allowed to attend alongside them.
War Day
After Danny was crowned he decided that the truce party had to have a counterpart, after all ghosts became friends mostly through battles, and he assumed that one day letting them fight wouldn't be a bad thing, it might even help stir up some grudges.
This was how High King Phantom, ruler of the infinite realms inaugurated the long-awaited "Day of War" or just "War Day", a moment when the Infinite Realms naturally became chaotic; alliances were allowed but it was not advisable to trust on them.
And of course, you were free not to participate, you just had to put a blue or green band on your arm, or a little green clock in the backyard of your haunt so the ghosts would leave you, your haunt or your territory in general alone.
Danny thought of it as some kind of giant paintball day, only with no paintballs and full of aggressive ghosts with various powers, it was especially exciting since everyone knew there would be no hard feelings after it and they would end up in the king's palace eating sweets as little children.
They usually celebrated it on a day close to any celebration related to death in human world, when their powers were especially powerful and therefore everyone could have more fun.
The problem was that since Danny had human friends (liminals?) who came to play, they didn't really consider it weird when some humans fell into the realms by a natural portal, and since they weren't wearing any blue or green arm bands they were definitely in the game.
For their part, the family of bats along with some League allies found themselves literally standing on a field of war where everyone seemed to be going for the kill, Jason was strangely excited about it, as was Damian.
When Dick asked one of the locals for an explanation, a guy on a motorbike threw him into the air laughing and yelled "LET THE HUNGER GAMES BEGIN!"
Imagine if after Fright Knight leaves and Jason reads the scroll he just..........stops. Like he just learned that the baby brother he saved all those years ago not only didn't have a normal and happy life, but is also dead and expected to RULE A WHOLE DIMENSION BY HIMSELF. If something similar to this had happened to me and my sisters, I would have been absolutely crushed and devastated. Jason just wanted to help but unknowingly both saved and doomed his most beloved person
The ANGST POTENTIOL. This is just an amazing prompt.
Another Sibling Danny and Jason idea!!
"Are you Jason Peter Todd?!" demanded a deep and commanding tone from the strange glowing being in front of them.
All the Bats stiffened and tensed, no doubt gearing up for a fight against the being that somehow knew Red Hood's full name.
Jason, Red Hood, decided to put on a brave front despite no doubt cursing in his head and wondering how the heck did this thing know his full freaking name.
"Whose asking." he snarled out, his hands twitching for his gun when the huge glowing knight with purple flames coming out of his helmet and cape, who was riding on a nightmare looking horse while they all had been in the cave going over tonight's patrol.
The Knight didn't seemed bothered by his response nor did he even seem to care or flinch when Batman made his own demand on 'Why was he there and who was he' or when Damian unsheathed his sword and pointed it towards him. Instead the strange glowing Knight reached to it side and pulled out... A glowing scroll? Huh. (Also he completely unnerved everyone in the room when the Knight didn't even react when Batman had tossed a Baterang when he reached for his side)
The Knight opened the scroll and spoke clearly with purpose.
"Jason Peter Todd,
You are hereby invited as a special guest of honor to the crowning of our future King of the Infinite Realms.
Daniel Phantom, once Daniel Jackson Fenton, and once Daniel Austen Todd.
Prince of the Infinite Realms, the Keeper of Balance, The Peacekeeping Halfa, the Defeater of the Tyrant King Pariah Dark, The Great One, Youngest of the Ancients, Ancient of Space, The Bridge between Life and Death.
You, the half-brother of our King, have been given the highest of honors for your past actions and will be given housing and food in the Realms and Phantom's Keep, for the week long event. Personal servants and attendants will be at your disposable and a seamstress will be on hand to tailor make your attire for the Coronation.
Signed: Clockwork. Ancient of Time. Watcher of the Infinite Timeline. Kronos. Mentor and Adviser.
PS: I shall have Fright Knight ("Me" the Knight bluntly said for a second) leave this scroll along with a personal one for you from Daniel to read over and once you make up your mind sign the bottom of the scroll.
I do hope in time you will pick the right choice Jason Todd, we of the Infinite Realms would like to reward you for your actions. After all, if you hadn't gotten young Daniel away from your father that night all those years ago, we would never had gained our Prince nor be free from our once Tyrant King.
Ah, one more thing.
The Infinite Realms will always favor you Jason."
Jason felt like he couldn't breath as Fright Knight? Rolled up the scroll, pulled a letter from his side, and held out the two items for him to take.
I Have This WK Au I'm working on:
The DemiGod AUđżđ
And i need some Help with a few ideas. Like what to do with the rest of the Crew and specifically with how old the Kratt bros should be. I'm not sure if i should make them thousands or hundreds of years old or go a little younger. And with the crew I wanna make them still human. Maybe have some powers cause this is a fantasy based AU but not rly sure about their jobs and such. Anyway thank you!! I'm really interested with the ideas i can get!
Okay, I'm an idiot, but please follow me for a second.
Old Villain with sad eyes, seeing the young hero for the first time: "you're really young"
Young Hero (also an idiot): "I've been younger"
Ok yâallâŚ
Iâve been blessed by the AO3 gods an decided to come out of my hibernation to write about thisâŚsituation⌠đ
Iâd love to hear yâallâs thoughts about Sand and Boeingâs backstory.
Honestly, I just feel bad for Sand in this situation, cause, yes, he couldâve set clear boundaries, but weâve already established that heâs too nice and forgiving. And, to me, he honestly seemed pretty uncomfortable whenever he interacted with BoeingâŚ
As a matter of fact , I do wonder why we are here . Specifically , why are we on this post ?
If you are reading this , then it means your a fan of either Red vs. Blue or Gears of War and that your really bored that there hasn't been any content for neither franchise . Don't despair , for Greg is here and man , do I have something for you guys .
Now , we all know about fanfiction , some of us read it , others avoid it like the plague and yet it is often these very brave people who write these things who tend to try to give us fans something new out of our current or past fictional fixations when the creators aren't doing anything new with it .
You may be wondering if I am trying to promote my own work to you , but I am not a writer . Oh no , I am not brave enough for that . What I am trying to sell to you is an idea , which you can take for your own use or ignore it at your own leisure .
Still with me ? Great , then enough dilly dallying , we have a show to catch . Now , what I am about to unveil to you is an crossover fusion between Red vs. Blue and Gears of War . You might say that it is yet another Halo rehash , worse than the Netflix show , but it is more of a Gears of War story with elements of Rooster Teeth's series more than anything .
The general plot happens after E-Day or Emergence Day when the Locust Horde launches its surprise attack on humanity and continues on past Victory Day or when the Lambent has been turned inert and the Locust went into hibernation . Why is it happening around this time period ? Because translating the plot of Red vs. Blue to a Gears of War setting isn't something that can be justified with the available lore we have from The Coalition studio , as such whatever weirdness was occurring in the seasons prior to Red vs. Blue : Recovery One must be carefully curated or we might get something fun here and we don't want that . Anyways , we can't really justify such things as Agent Wyoming's temporal distortion unit or Junior's existence , as such we might need to hand wave them away with something else . While on this subject , it might not be possible to keep the American States naming theme Project Freelancer seems to have , but then again due to a lack of a topological map regarding the world of Sera and having barely any knowledge regarding the process behind naming the cities , countries and continents of Sera , we can just say that the Freelancers got their names from places that people barely know of and leave it at that . We can however , say that the bomb that threw the Reds and Blues into the "future" of Season 3 was the Imulsion Countermeasure Weapon from the ending of Gears of War 3 .
Speaking of the Reds and Blues , while I am partial to the whole idea of simulation troopers , I am not really certain that in a world where everything is a battle of attrition with every soldier being a cannon fodder , a nebulous organization can get away with whisking away manpower is something desirable by the government during a time of crisis , as such we can simply go with the idea that they are mixed group of Stranded and ex - Gears . Stranded are basically everywhere and with the breakdown of both society and military discipline , disgruntled soldiers who deserted might be just as common , hence justify why this band of misfits is even possible by the standards of any modern-day military . Also Lopez might not be a humanoid robot right now , but he can be a JACK unit . But now , you might be wondering , what is the deal with the Freelancers then ? To which I say , the Freelancer Program is basically creating armor enhancements , then in order to test those modifications without the chance of losing said equipment to the Locust , they basically create tensions between rivals Stranded factions , then sell out their services to both sides and afterwards walk away with their data and a fresh pile of corpses no one will care about . Now your curious why are they doing this ? If you haven't watched the show , then spoilers , the Director of this whole mess is such a simp that he wants to Frankenstein's Monster his dead wife using Artificial Intelligence or more specifically Split Personalities that were surgically removed from an AI based on the Director's own mind . How would have this worked , who knows ? I am of the mind that he is an Artificial Intelligence specialist and didn't really have an idea how to resurrect his spouse without reverse-engineering the human mind , therefore he was blinded by the saying " If the only tool you have is a hammer, you will start treating all your problems like a nail â . Suffice to say things didn't work out for the man . Now applying this whole shebang to a Gears of War setting is pretty easy since we know Artificial Intelligence technology exists in the lore and I can stretch the limits of belief by saying that he planned to use AI and cutting-edge robotics in order to transform his dead wife into a cyborg revenant not unlike Commander Sheppard in Mass Effect 2 . But I digress . The GoW Director's plan involved studying the neuroscience behind combining human and synthetic personalities as well as reverse-engineer desired traits by first separating them from the Alpha , more on him later , then cobbling them back together in order to get the gist of the puzzle , hence the Meta . This whole idea came from the concept of Huginn and Muninn or thought and memory , for those who don't speak Old Norse , which I interpret as the founding blocks of a person since we each have our own way of thinking as well as different memories that define our lives , therefore the Director would need to re-create both to get his money's worth . Long story short , he basically used his agents as guinea pigs to see how he could use an AI to simulate his dead wife's way of thinking as well as how divergent memories might interfere with the process . By far the best successes in that endeavor were the Meta , Private Leonard L. Church and Omega . Leonard is the mix of the hollowed out Artificial Intelligence Alpha with the mind of Private Jimmy , who were blended together in order to get the Alpha away from the more moralistic elements of the Program and basically ended up as a deadbeat soldier fighting a losing war for survival , which is way out of the way come to think of it .
With that out of the way , we can also say that the Freelancers were formed during the waning days of the Pendulum Wars as an attempt by the Coalition of Ordered Governments at a super soldier program since they weren't doing all that hot in the super weapons department against the Union of Independent Republics . The Director told the Chairman and upper echelon of the military what they wanted to hear , new armor and weapons capable of pushing past human limitations , while omitting the tiny detail about what he really wanted to do . Honestly this sounds like someone trying to cramp on Gendo Ikari's whole deal at this point . He managed to produce enough results to justify the Freelancers existence despite problems with mass producing the equipment by pummeling the revolutionary movements financed by the UIR into a pulp as well as making his organization as self-sufficient of the government as possible . This ultimately allowed them to continue existing even after the fall of human civilization as their existence was a secret known to a few and whatever evidence remained became the stuff of legends . That is until two of their former agents decided to put an end to all of this following the end of the Locust War , hence the plot of season 10 coming into play .
I know I haven't really talked about the story itself , but honestly seasons 4 to 10 are easily transcribed onto the GoW storyline that it barely needs any editing . Season 11 to 13 , however , might need some adjustments such as the Federal Government of Chorus being an UIR or COG remnant still in power following the post-war period that is fighting a pointless battle against the Stranded New Republic movement who want to do away with all the ideologies of the past . Little do they know that they are manipulated by a fringe element of the actual COG in order to get easy access to their natural resources . Locust is now named after the enemy that left a very profound psychological scar on him and Fenix might have been a Freelancer reject that has something to prove . Meanwhile the Reds and Blues were being transported by the UIR navy as per a recall order of all surviving Gear assets by the COG and have stumbled upon a minefield planted by the Pirate faction .
I will not touch upon any season or spin-off series after the Chorus Saga since there is no way I can hand wave away time travel shenanigans , godly AI and paradoxes , hence we are pretending they are not real for the time being . Pun not intended .
So yeah , that's the whole darned thing off my chest and ready for any of you to pick up for the price of reading this whole thing . What , did you really think I would actually ask for money ? I am bold , but not that bold .

Characters having assumptions about the world that are fundamentally incorrect, but correct enough. Too often I see people create extremely elaborate magic systems, and then make all the characters automatically have a clear grasp on how the system works.
There is nothing wrong with intricate magic systems, I love them too! However, the secrecy and mystery of unknown magic shouldn't be limited to only the very rare and powerful, because here's the thing: We have no idea what gravity is. Gravity, the most common and observed *thing* in all of science. Is it a particle? A curve of space-time? A force?
Guess what? Curves and particles and forces are all made up by people. They are concepts that we use to try to understand how the world works. They are never fully accurate, but they are accurate enough for what we need them for. The universe is chaos, and we apply rules to it to simplify reality. Reality exists beyond these rules, though. It is a sphere of undefinable complexity.
Here's an example: Magic Missile, the most common and used spell of all evocations. Is it caused by a sudden rise in local portent? Or maybe it is an extension of the caster's arcane properties? A sigil?
Guess what? Sigils and poetent and incantation are all made up by wizards. They are concepts that magic wielders use to try to understand how magic works. They are never fully accurate, but they are accurate enough for what they need them for. Magic is chaos, and we apply rules to it to simplify spellcasting. Magic exists beyond these rules, though. It is a sphere of undefinable weird.
Tldr; Magic=Physics, Wizards=Scientists. Nothing is certain, and we exist only in the amorphous bubble of theory
What are some world-building ideas or tropes that you want to see more of? I enjoy world-building but want something new or exciting or out of the ordinary to help get the juices flowing again
Ok so I noticed @aroace-get-out-of-my-face and @babyblankyerror (PLEASE GO CHECK THEM OUT THEYRE SO COOL)making some awesome prompts so I figured I would try my hand at one (based off a dream I had)
So Stanley is captured. Probably by Rico or something, and in a warehouse all tied up. When Rico leaves to go do something or whatever, Stanley somehow summons a nice but a bit wacky wizard (he had some magical item he stole from somebody that Rico didnât bother to take and him struggling summons the wizard) the wizard, seeing Stan has his item, goes âoh boy! You found my missing item! Ive been looking for that for ages! Since you found it, Iâll give you one wish!â And Stan, weirded out of his mind, wondering why the guy he stole the item from is congratulating him on finding it, and probably thinks heâs dreaming but not about to give up an opportunity to escape, goes;
âGET ME OUTTA HERE!â
Of course, his mouth is tied up and gagged so the wizard has to work with what heâs got.
Though honestly âdrake bug hawk bearâ is not a good guess.
The wizard goes âalright great! I can do that! :)â and teleports him outside of the warehouse and tells him he has 24 hours till the spell kicks in (to give him time to leave) Stan, not really listening, jumps in his car and heads out, still confused as hell. Of course, 24 hours later the car is a bit too small to keep driving in and also now is wrecked because turning into a crazy hybrid of a dragon, stag beetle, golden eagle, and brown bear may cause some damage to your surroundings.
So he starts walking. Where, you ask?
To gravity falls.
Meanwhile, Stanford is having the time of his life! Heâs researching, heâs finding new, interesting creatures, heâs defying the laws of nature, heâs getting chased down by a unicorn after trying to take its blood for âtesting purposesâ,
Wait actually that last one isnât vey good.
But luckily for him, Stan has been walking for days and honestly couldnât be more willing to fight off magical creatures for his brother.
Sibling bonding time!
There its is thatâs. Thatâs the idea. Is cool? Did good job??? I cooked???

I'm sure all of you heard that idea where villain makes hero choose between their lover and the team/city. And of course in 99% of it hero chooses the team/city. Cause you know, hero and everything.
But you know what I would wanna see?
Where the villain makes hero choose between their team and lover (obviously), but they put hero in live-threating situation.
The villain shows up with the hero team and heros lover as their hostage. And the villain hands hero the gun and is like âto make it out alive, you have to sacrifice someone. Who do you choose?"
And hero WITHOUT HESITATION, shoot's the villain. Like not that the villain will die immediately but still be pretty serious injured.
And then the hero walks to the villain, GRABS THEIR SHIRT TO BRING THEIR FACE CLOSER, and then slowly, distinctly he says:
âDon't you ever make me choose between the people I care about".
Yeah. That's the kind of work I would gladly consume and let my brain rot over.
What are the things you want to see and don't want to see in novels? (I'm trying to come up with my next novel, and I need some inspiration. I think I want my protagonist to be autistic and ace)
Only puts in one earbud (whether because the other one is ALWAYS broken or because they want to be able to listen to music and everything around)
Never has acne, but has enough other skin problems to make up for it
Allergic to mint, which causes rashes on their face (I have this and it sucks)
Always turns their screen brightness and volume down as low as they can (or direct opposite)
Always wears certain jewelry (rings, earrings, bracelets, necklaces, toe rings)
Never listens to "normal" music. Only musicals. Or not music at all. Only podcasts
Can't read because they always have a song stuck in their head
They go through insane phases of hyper fixations where they constantly make references to something but never go on tangents
Never cleans their glasses (or direct opposite; always cleans them)
Tries to dress nice but has no fashion sense
One last thing. Giving your most likable character glasses isn't a bad idea because some people (cough, cough, me) hate their glasses until a character they like wears glasses, then they love their glasses. It can really make an impact! Just an idea. (That sentence made no sense, sorry)

Full offense but your writing style is for you and nobody else. Use the words you want to use; play with language, experiment, use said, use adverbs, use âunrealisticâ writing patterns, slap words you donât even know are words on the page. Language is a sandbox and you, as the author, are at liberty to shape it however you wish. Build castles. Build a hovel. Build a mountain on a mountain or make a tiny cottage on a hill. Whatever it is you want to do. Write.
the worst
I'm going to agree with @softest-punk in part, expand on their reply in part, and disagree in part. (And there's another format you can use to structure a story around -- disagree/agree with canon, or something a particular character said, etc.) Here's the part I agree with loudly and wholeheartedly:
If you take no other advice from this list, take this piece: read more. Read widely. Read old books, read new books. Read people's dropped grocery lists. Read amateurs, read professionals, read poetry and lyrics and the backs of shampoo bottles. The more words you absorb, the more you have to draw from when you sit down to write.
Seriously, I've been giving that "writing" advice for decades, and I stand by it as the best writing advice other than "write." If you aren't already reading a wide variety of genres and styles, either do that, or double down on the genre/style you like best and let it inspire you.
Here's the part I want to expand on:
Use an established format. The only one of these still remotely in fashion is 5 + 1 fics, I think (back in my day we wrote songfics and listfics and Very Secret Diaries riffs but I think if you do that last one now Cassandra Clare steals your lunch maybe idk). This I also do all the time, as a way to break the seal on a new fandom. The format is such that you're practically just filling in the blanks. You could do something like this in as little as six sentences.
I love the Five Things [Five Things That Didn't Happen To Character X (& One That Did)] format and, as many such stories are titled "Five Things..." they can be easily found via AO3's search function and you have a trove of stories to browse through and/or further winnow to your fandom(s) of choice.
In my corner of fandom, at least, short-form fic of the drabble (100 words), drouble (200 words), or other arbitrary word-count length is still current â indeed, I just posted a drouble the other day, and my dear friend @petralemaitre posts sprees of short-form prose (and short-form poetry) on the regular. You can even search on "drabble" to find stories tagged that way (though there was at least a while there when people were using the term to mean a short-ish story of any length), if the idea of such a constrained length leaves you wondering what you could even accomplish with so few words.
I'm not going to pretend drabbles are easy, but: 1) the concept of a hard word limit will help you learn to hone your sentences and edit as you go, and 2) if the story gets away from you and winds up being 500, 1000 words, or more? Then you've got a longer story, and that's great too!
Finally, here's the part I have to disagree with:
There's no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' art and you should be suspicious of anyone who tells you there is. The measure of success in art is that it's what you meant it to be.
(emphasis mine)
That first sentence I take no issue with.
However, many creative people find that they feel that even their best, most acclaimed works did not come out as they intended and/or are so flawed that the flaws outshine anything they like about the work in question â and you should take care not to let either feeling, should you experience either about your writing, keep you from sharing what you've written with at least a beta reader or other small audience whose opinion you trust.
Some people seem to have the "all I see are the flaws" response to all of their work, and that's just something they have to push past. Most people, in my experience and across media, feel that much if not all of their work didn't turn out the way they intended at its inception, even if they are pleased with how the work did turn out. So, if you intend a story to begin at point A and proceed through point B to point C, and in the process of writing, you instead wind up proceeding through point Рto point Ψ? That's totally okay! Plus, if you want you can still go back and try to write the original idea over again!
tl;dr on this last part: You don't have to be 100% pleased with your final product, nor does it need to be what you intended to create, for your artistic output to be worthy of sharing with the world.
Happy writing!
Any advice for people who have lots of Thoughtsâ˘ď¸ about fictional characters but who have not, in the past, enjoyed the act of writing? I was always bad at it in school, which didn't help, and I know ~"you should write it even if it's bad"~ however I am still a recovering perfectionist and this is easier said than done (hence the not enjoying it). Add on top of that that writing fiction is very different from writing a 5 paragraph persuasive essay or whatever else they taught in school, so the little I do know doesn't feel applicable. (I'd just draw fanart instead, but my abilities do not lie there either lol). But I desperately want a way to actually engage in fandoms instead of just lurking in the shadows, and you seem to be quite knowledgeable about writing
Okay so first of all I am SO EXCITED for you because you get to start a new creative pursuit and it's one that comes with a huge community of like-minded people. One of my absolute favourite things in fandom is getting to see people posting their first fic. Truly a magical experience. I am always so so proud of them.
Second, have a quote from Jodi Picoult which is a favourite amongst my beloved writing group:
You can always edit a bad page. You can't edit a blank page.
The trick with writing is that in order to do it, you have to do it. In this way it is similar to the majority of human endeavour.
If you genuinely hate the process then my sincere advice is to not do this. You've only got, like, 100 years at the outside on this little rock. Better not to spend any of them doing things you do not enjoy in your leisure time, if at all possible. Make playlists or reclists, start conversations, take up podficcing, take up fic binding, write meta about your character thoughts, do something congenial to you (and some part of fandom must be congenial to you or you wouldn't like. Be here.)
However. If you do want to write, and you think you could learn to love the process, or at least want to try, here are some inroads you could take a crack at:
Outline your idea rather than trying to write it as a polished narrative and post that. I do this a lot. Sometimes I then go back and actually write the fic, sometimes someone else writes the fic for me, which is delightful. (This looks like "So I'm thinking about a fic in which Aloysius inherits a haunted mansion..." etc.)
Try epistolary format (letters/texts/emails/post-it notes/notes scribbled in the margins of a notebook/whatever). This cuts all the tricky bits of prose narrative and allows you to focus on the events of a story using a form of writing you are undoubtedly already comfortable with.
Try a retelling. This is what the pros do when they're stuck & it's just fanfic layered with fanfic, really. Crack open a copy of your favourite fairy tale and just rewrite it. Sentence for sentence if you like, with nothing more than names and details changed. Pick a single scene from something you like and rewrite it for The Characters.
There are probably a million more ways to approach this, but the overall point is to get you to start. You simply cannot do a thing without doing the thing. Once you've started, then you can worry about improvement. Or not. You are not obliged to be 'good' at writing in order to do it. Many professional career writers are fucking awful.
A bonus few things I wish I could personally carve into the inside of every new writer's skull:
You are allowed to write more than one story in your life, the first one does not have to say Everything You've Ever Wanted To Say or contain Every Single Idea You've Had. It's probably better if it doesn't, even!
It is orders of magnitude better to finish a very short story that has a complete arc than to get 10% in to an epic and then stop because you don't know how to continue it. If all your writing practice involves writing openings and then stopping, you are teaching yourself to write openings and then stop. Better to write 100 words and have it be a complete story than 10,000 words of introduction.
There's no such thing as 'good' or 'bad' art and you should be suspicious of anyone who tells you there is. The measure of success in art is that it's what you meant it to be.
You cannot possibly please everyone. The person you should focus on pleasing is yourself, because you are the only person obliged to interact with your work. Might as well be fun for you.
Talent isn't real. Anyone who appears to be 'talented' has put a lot of hours of work into doing the thing they're doing.
All that said: please imagine me rolling out the welcome mat and blowing a party whistle while eagerly beckoning you to come in and join the wider writing community.
Can you do angsty romantic prompts/angsty love triangle prompts/bad timing angsty romantic prompts
angsty romance prompts as requested by anonymous
1. your eyes keep searching for theirs almost like it's automatic. maybe that's why you know that they're never looking at you, but at the girl sitting on the other far end of the room, sipping a drink.
2. your calendars are all marked; there's a big red circle around today's date. you're so ready for this, you've been preparing a week ahead - even went to their favourite book store to buy a book you know they've been eyeing for a while. the gift wrapped book sits neatly inside your bag, and you're skipping steps to see them as soon as you canâ
you finally see them but they're not alone. oh. you've never seen them smile like that before. oh wow. you can't believe how gentle that smile looks framed by the sunset, but it's not for you. you turn around, and the gift bag digs into your skin from how tightly you're holding it.
3. you can do this. you can do this. you can do â
"hey," you finally begin before your mind shuts you up again. "I need to tell you something."
you know you have their attention, judging by their pursed lips and raised eyebrows. you feel like they're screaming the word "what?"
"um , it'sâ I like you."
you wish for a smile to grace their features but unfortunately for you, your wishes don't come true.
"I already knew," they say and it feels like someone stabbed you in the back.
"h-how long?" why didn't you say anything? why were you silent all this time? oh. ohh.
suddenly, everything makes sense. you don't need an answer to know that your feelings are not returned. you try a weak attempt at a smile, just so that you don't start crying on the spot.
4. "hey, I understand you love me, but you know that we need to settle on a place to live together, if we want to be together... right?"
"I know, I know, but I don't know what I'm going to do with my life yet! you have everything figured out, and I... I don't even know what I'm going to do tomorrow!!"
you feel the familiar feeling of your throat closing up again - you've had this conversation way too many times to know how it ends.
"I understand love, but we gotta at least make a plan right? at least try to?" you feel like you're pleading but you try and ignore it.
"is it so bad to just live in the present?" they ask and something in you snaps.
"so what? just so we can break up when I have to move back home? I can't stay here, my course gets over in a few months!!"
you hear just their breathing for a moment from the other end of the line. you wish things could be that peaceful.
"I don't plan my life like yours... I can't â it just makes me feel stuck."
you let silence fill the words you don't want to say, or the words you don't want to hear. you just don't know anymore.
5. "you know I still love you the same way I did before right?"
you sigh. this was hard for you too but they don't seem to get it.
"I know and I loved you too."
a pause. "I loved you. that's all you seem to say to me nowadays. that you don't love me anymore."
they don't need to know that you had to say it enough times to yourself to believe it.
"how can I trust you the same way again? after you broke my heart and gave me a year of radio silence, just to come back and claim that you love me again? please don't test me!"
only I know how those 365 days felt like an entire lifetime of endless pain.
thank you for being my first ask anon! i hope you like this :)
one handing the other their jacket because they're feeling cold. "are you cold? here, take my jacket."
B's jacket looks too big on A, making them look more smaller than they are. 'they're adorable', B thinks. A looks at them a little cluelessly, struggling to wear it properly. B just sighs, fond, and helps them out.
A and B introducing each other to new experiences, making each other's lives more fulfilling. "here, I got this for you"; "do you want to go there with me?"
A knows B loves sweets so gets them sweets from their hometown and B looks like Christmas came early. "are all of these for me? you're the best!!" A just smiles fondly at them, nodding happily.
A and B go out with B's friend, who walks a little too quickly. A can't really keep up, but they try, not wanting to bring it up and make the third person feel uncomfortable. B notices, walks slower to match A's pace and gently alerts their friend - "hey C, can we walk a little slower?"
one invites the other over to an activity that they know they'll like, to cheer them up, make them smile or just to spend more time with them.
giving each other compliments that go beyond the surface/looks, choosing to compliment them about their personality. "I like the way you pour your heart into everything you do"; " i don't know what it is that you're doing, but keep doing what you're doing - just keep being yourself"; "I'm able to be myself with you and it feels nice."
one staying back after their lecture to wait for the other (and sometimes pretending that they weren't waiting for a long time, to not make the other feel guilty).
A wants to host B for a change because B does that for them all the time. They're seriously amazed and in awe of B's ability to host, that they become nervous when the time comes. "hey, relax, I came here for you, so you should just be yourself."
A and B hang out at a common friend's house, and B chooses to leave earlier than A. Before they go, they make sure to tell their friend, "please make sure A gets home early and safe."
A and B go to shop for some clothes, and A waits for B right outside the dressing room while they're trying on their clothes. When B comes out, a pleasant smile pulls on their lips to see A still waiting for them. "It's your turn now," B says, placing a gentle hand on A's shoulder, "I'll wait for you right here."
A considers themselves as a soft-spoken person, they don't really raise their voice and because of that, they often feel like they're not heard, or like they have to say something more than once to be heard. it makes them really insecure and they try to be louder, but it's still hard for them to do it most of the time. B always hears them though; reacts even when A calls out for them only once and it never fails to warm A's heart.
When A and B are part of group discussions, one always makes sure that the other is heard / has a chance to give their opinions. "Hey A, what do you think about this?"; "I think B hasn't had a chance to give their opinion yet".
(y'all really seemed to like this one a lot, so here's a part 2! I hope you'll enjoy this one too <3 thank you for all the love and support đ)
again, this can be used for anyone - close friends, s/o, crushes. please feel free to change pronouns as you see fit :)
A and B are benchmates, and by the end of the lecture, they've managed to become more than strangers, and people with common interests. They exchange numbers - "can I have your full name?" "sure, but why?" "I just like to store the full names of people's contacts that I'm going to save."
A has never eaten out with their new friend before, so they're pretty nervous because they eat differently? compared to the locals. "i'm sorry, but can I eat with my hands? I just feel more comfortable doing it." B just smiles kindly at A, and A immediately feels at home, despite being miles away from it. "of course you can, please be comfortable!"
A introduces their cuisine to B and B absolutely loves it. "I can't believe I've never had this before!" "do you like it?" " of course! this is easily one of the best meals I've had in my life". Then they both grin at each other and continue to spend the upcoming hours in the restaurant, smiling, chatting away and having a jolly time. (the restaurant people are nice because they don't get kicked out xD)
A teaches B how to eat food from their cuisine and B follows obediently. A is so impressed by B's efforts, just looks at B with a fond smile while B is busy trying to eat the food correctly. "am I doing this right? can I eat this with both hands?"
B invites A over to their place for Halloween and A is so pleasantly surprised, that they can't believe it. "You're inviting me over? really?" "of course! I'd love to have you over if you'd like to come!" A later gets to know that B themselves was a transfer student who went to another country to study, so they can understand the feelings of an international student. A was just so touched and couldn't stop smiling.
It's A's first Halloween and B watches them smile and get excited about everything with a fond look on their face. A turns to them, almost shy, "um, i- I didn't really bring any Halloween clothes," and B has to try really hard to hold in their laugh because A was just being really cute right now. "I can help with that," - B finds a pair of cute purple socks and a headband for A to wear and A's excitement lights up B's entire evening.
"so, do you invite people often?" you seem to be a really good host." B, surprised, "ah, thank you for saying that, but actually, no, I don't." A smiles at the answer and they continue watching the movie playing on the tv, a comfortable distance between them, feeling warm despite the cold winds outside.
B watches A order their usual and smiles at them, "hot chocolate as usual?". A nods, happy with their favourite drink in hand. "What are you getting?" B points to their plate, "oh, just a plate of strawberry cheesecake, I really like these." A makes a mental note of it.
At the cafe again, weeks later, after class, "one hot chocolate and one strawberry cheesecake please!" B just stares at A, dumbfounded, "you remember!" "of course I do!"
"do you want to talk? I don't want to go home just yet." A and B walk over to a bench on their campus and proceed to talk into the evening until A had to catch a bus back home.
A spots a duck upside down in a pond and immediately texts B (who's absent that day) - "uhh, a duck is upside down and I'm worried about it." A doesn't know but B was wheezing while texting back, " that's normal don't worry, it's just feeding." A lets out a breath of relief, "thank goodness! I haven't seen a lot of ducks in my hometown." "I can tell."
A and B compare their hand sizes, after which B holds A's (much smaller) hand. "your hands are so small, no wonder you get cold easily!" A just smiles happily and holds B's hand tighter.
A and B spend the whole day together and then can't stop thinking about it after. "is it weird that I'm grinning, still thinking about how fun today was?" "no, because I'm still thinking about it too."
this can be for anyone - your crush, s/o, close friends. i hope you'll have fun with this!
A messaging B to wear layers first thing in the morning because they know that B never checks their weather forecast (and A obsessively checks it every day).
A and B have a study session together where B is already done with most of their work, but A is still looking all focused at their laptop, so B just pretends like they have more work to do while keeping an eye on A, in case A needs anything to be more comfortable.
Knowing that the other prefers hot/cold water and making sure to fill that in another bottle and giving it to them while you fill your own bottle.
You're having a picnic with your friends and you're in charge of buying the drinks, so you're at a grocery shop, scanning the aisles and you find a bottle of so-so that you know A really likes, so you pick it up for them, along with other general drinks for everyone else.
A and B go out to eat with their friends, and when they are leaving the restaurant, B forgets their jacketâdeep in conversation with another friend. A picks it up for them, just as B turns back, searching for their jacket. "here you go" "thank you so much! i was just going to go and look for it"
A eats slowly and B knows that but they don't mind at all. B just finishes eating first and engages A by talking to them about something until A finishes eating their food.
B is scared of dogs so the moment they see a dog approaching them, they pull A in front of them like a shield. A just lets B do whatever they want because they're too busy cooing at the dog.
A invites B out to spend the day together because they've been a little worried about them recently. B hesitantly agrees, and by the end of the day, B ends up having so much fun that they both end up going home pretty late.
B is waiting for the bus to arrive so texts A in the mean time so as not to feel bored. "this street lamp looks so yellow!" A genuinely enjoys their randomness, so they of course indulge in it. "oh yeah? what kind of yellow?"
A knowing that B has a very low tolerance to the cold and asking them to go inside and not to wait with them for the bus to arrive. "please go in! you're going to catch a cold!" "it's okay, the app says it's just a few more minutes away."
