remember how we we were robbed of spinner narrating the mva arc? bc i do and i'm still mad about it

for those who don't remember or haven't watch the anime: in the anime, izuku also narrate the mva even though it's spinner in the manga

i want to give the benefit of the doubt to those who worked on the anime. at first i didn't understand why spinner was the narrator either as he didn't seem like an important character

but now that mha is over, it's seems obvious that this narration was hinting at spinner's book, if not a part of the book itself

this entire arc is basically "yeah we're villains but we're also people and we care about each other, here's our story". so it doesn't make sense that izuku narrates it, but it does for spinner. his league was his reason to be, he let himself get mutilated/tortured/whatever you wanna call what afo did to him in the final arc for the league, and especially for shigaraki

so yeah, i wish we could have gotten narrator spinner

yapping about my 'touya had a fnaf phase' hc

☆ he started watching horror games gameplays just to prove he could watch them without being scared (he couldn't)

☆ his favorite game is fnaf 3 (bc daddy issues lmao) but it's also the one that scares him the most

☆ he didn't care about the lore at first bc he was just watching gameplays but he somehow ended up watching a theory video and immediately loved the lore side of the fandom

☆ his favorite animatronic is foxy (bc he used to remind him of himself but he refuses to admit it out loud)

☆ natsuo wasn't a fnaf fan but he knew the basics so he'd play the Toreador March at random times just to spook touya

☆ imagine if fnaf 4, sister location and pizzeria simulator came out while he was out in a coma: he wakes up with all the traumas and struggles that we know about but on top of that he learns that his fav franchise made 3 new games that give some kind of canon. so he watched the gameplays as soon as he could lmao

if there's one thing I know about Dabi it's the fact that he was so fucking annoying about his hidden identity.

*staring dead in the eyes* 'How sad, Todoroki Shouto...' (he cried himself to sleep about this later)

he stalks Fuyumi one day and when she notices he cryptically announces this was a fateful meeting 'WASN'T, TODOROKI FUYUMI?' staring her in the eyes with Enji's trademarked shade of blue eyes and promptly leaves.

sends his mother rindou flowers to the hospital, signed with his name, and she assumes it's Enji who is losing it this time, but she guesses she can appreciate the thoughtful gift from her regretful husband (?)

he runs into Natsuo at the store one day and instead of running to the exit he makes sure to brush shoulders with his and take off his hood, pushing up his dyed hair so that the white roots stand out more and goes: 'Fancy meeting you here, Todoroki Natsuo'.

'??????'

then Fuyumi and Natsuo are shocked by his broadcast not because never in their wildest dreams did they imagine their older brother alive but because they were convinced they hallucinated the League of Villain's Dabi actually being their deceased older brother Touya and now they aren't sure what to think about the audacity this fucker had to approach them like that and leave without elaborating.

but with the League? can't torture his backstory out of him. he name-dropped Todoroki Touya at least 7 times around them.

Touya literally radiated heat, so Shouto could feel him by his side. Call him a baby but he felt untouchable with his big brother near him. More than a bodyguard, Touya acted like a hero in his eyes. If All Might could maintain peace in Japan, Touya could maintain safety in Shouto’s life. * “So, why is the troupe gathered?” Mister Compress asked from the bar where he sat, stimming with a duo of marbles in his hand.     Toga commented how she thought they were a league and not a troupe. Shigaraki got up and - oh god that hand was truly disgusting. Anyway, Shigaraki got up and stood before everyone while scratching his neck.

“UA’s organizing a training camp for the first-year students. We’re gonna sabotage it.”

i refuse to believe endeavor cared enough to check what his 'failures' were doing on the internet. and i feel like touya is the type of person who brags about how he watched scary stuff when he was young (idk if that makes sense lmao)

soulmate au where your mark is your soulmate's name, but as they write it. it changes as you grow older; goes from shaky hirigana to kanji, the characters flowing like ink across your skin. it settles eventually, with only tiny deviations, and you pay it little mind.

until it goes from todoroki touya to dabi.

thoughts on dabi's identity reveal

i love dabi's identity reveal, it's the most dramatic thing he could have done and i love him for that.

but

i wish it had a bigger impact. of course this is obviously bc horikoshi decided the end of the todoroki storyline needed to focus on endeavor. but let's ignore that and pretend it's just because this reveal happened in the middle of a national crisis.

so what if touya had decided to do his identity reveal on a random day?

think about it. the sun is shining, the birds are singing, everything is fine. and then, out of nowhere, every single billboard and tv channel broadcast dabi's video (same as canon, without the "hawks killed twice" thing, perhaps replaced by dabi revealing he's been in contact with hawks or something). it only takes mere minutes for everyone to be aware of what's going on, and now all eyes are on touya.

1-A is in the dorms when this happens, it feels like a repeat of the endeavor vs high end fight. shouto is a mess, no one understand what's happening, even aizawa is confused as fuck.

meanwhile, endeavor is in his agency. he's watching the whole video from his computer, completely flabbergasted. even if he wants to claim dabi is a liar doing this for attention, but he knows deep down he'd be lying to himself.

hawks is watching everything too. he feels like his entire life has been a lie. the hero who saved him for his abuser ends up being an abuser too. (can you tell i hate how hawks always remains a endeavor fanboy in canon?)

during this shit show happens, dabi wanders around, burn a ything with endeavor's face in it, and watches how civilians are reacting. he's focusing on that while deciding if he'll go to endeavor's agency right after the end of his little broadcast, or if he'll let the information sink in.

it took 24 years but he finally got what he wanted. all eyes were on him. no one would ever be able to throw him aside and ignore him. he stills wants to keep on his suicide mission - it's either him or endeavor - but at least he got to enjoy having the attention for a while.

so yeah, touya is a dramatic little shit who wanted the attention that he deserved.

i'm finally publishing my fanfic!

two weeks ago, i published a one shot entitled a lesson never learned (only violence) and mentioned i would probably turn this into a multi chapter fic

well, i'm doing it!

it's titled can you melt a frozen heart? (or will you let it burn down?) and the first chapter is already available on ao3 :) (link below)

a lesson never learned works as its prologue since it takes place 7 years before. that's why i'm keeping the two works separated

so, if you like villain shouto, touya being a good sibling (or at least trying), league of villains as family, endeavor facing consequences, tododeku and dabihawks, feel free to give it a try!

my biggest pet peeve concerning dabi’s design is the staples and especially the fact that we’ll probably never know when and how he got them

his scars deteriorating over the years could make sense tbh, depending on what we imagine dabi has done until he joined the league, but the staples?

they’re a way to say “hey his body is falling apart” and that (has op said) doesn’t really make sense with the information given during dabi’s introduction.

and even if you justify it by saying that, quirk usage or not, his body deteriorated, how did he get them?

if ujiko had been the one stapling touya’s body, it would’ve made more sense + more gruesome. imagine the scene when touya sees himself after he wakes up but his face is also stapled together?

anyways, i still love all the justifications/headcanons in fanfics to explain the staples

dunno if I should call this a headcanon or a theory and I know Horikoshi just went with what looked cool but the more I think about Dabi's initial design when he came to the League in the context of what we learned about him and what we saw happen to him during the second war, the less sense it makes that his body was already in that state.

according to the anime, he was learning by watching Endeavor's videos online. before Sekoto, he wasn't learning from any source at all and went about his training intuitively, but after Sekoto I strongly doubt he would be actively practicing his quirk, for a multitude of reasons. his body was still healing from the skin transplantation, the trauma associated with accidentally burning himself to death, plainly not having a place to train a fire quirk, which tend to be flashy and to use your quirk in public, having a provisional license is required, otherwise he risks getting arrested. he did a very good job staying out of the public's eye for the 7 years since he escaped AFO, who was also implied to be unaware of Touya surviving for so long.

so as far as we know, all he did for those 7 years is lay low and be very online. which makes his remark to Spinner hilarious ngl, at least Spinner sprung up to action as soon as he saw something that had inspired him, while Dabi had spent 7 whole years sitting on his very personal trauma and not going to therapy.

when Giran brings him to Shigaraki, he doesn't share any information about Dabi save for him being very invested in Stain's ideology. no criminal records, maybe, but not even a word of his absurdly strong quirk? no mentions of arson at all? they did discuss Toga making it to the news, so Dabi being left out like that was a bit weird in the context of the conversation, like him seeking out Stain's contacts was enough reason to let him join the League. he won't be useful to you, Shigaraki, but he's got the spirit. please take him in, he has nowhere else to go?

if you really look at the way Dabi uses his quirk until MVA, it's noticeable how he seems to have no idea what he is doing. there's no technique, no finesse to his moves, just throwing out huge blasts of fire with his hands and hoping for the threat to leave him alone.

when Shigaraki attacked him (fully provoked) his reaction was too slow to summon any flames at all, and if it weren't for Kurogiri, that would have been it for Dabi.

When he is fighting Geten and starts going beyond his limit, he scares himself with the increased fire output. because, yup, overusing his quirk by accident was the source of his trauma.

the databook puts his technique as the weakest of his stats. his power is huge and eventually allowed him to become the strongest fire quirk user in the BNHA universe, but his technique was extremely lacking.

all of the above just doesn't paint the picture of someone who has been consistently mastering his quirk for 7 years. rather, it gives the picture of someone who had just started using his quirk for the first time in years, having background training from his childhood.

it's not even that Dabi isn't hardworking as hell or doesn't have the potential to be trained, because he's a complete opposite. continuously going beyond his limit, despite his own body getting in his way, mastering Enji and Shouto's complicated techniques they have worked for weeks/months/years on in a matter of minutes after just observing it. surely, he has been watching Enji and learning the way his father uses his quirk for years, but putting theory to practice? i doubt he even had the chance, before joining LOV.

he had to wait, because starting to actively use his quirk sets the clock into motion, counting down the time he has left. he is like a candle, destroying himself with his fire, until nothing is left at all. he had to make sure his plan of revenge will have a chance to succeed before fully committing to the 'Dabi' route, a slow and agonizing process of cremating himself by continuously using his quirk. because when he really starts using his quirk for long stretches of time? this is what happens to him.

to conclude this post, I know why the final design was chosen (because it's cool as fuck) but after analyzing the crucial points of Touya's story and his relationship with his quirk, I really think him joining the League with post-coma design would have made more sense. once he had started really using his quirk, his body would slowly degrade to the state Dabi's was in, because his fire literally melts his skin. but his body already having 40% surface third degree burns, when he didn't even use his quirk the entire time, perfectly holding up up until the first war arc and then quickly starting to burn down? idk, seems a bit inconsistent?..

anyway, i love the concept of Dabi's skin slowly and inevitably burning down after he had joined the League. him losing more and more skin until there's barely anything left, when he reveals himself to his father and is bitter at the lack of recognition, because burning himself to the point of being unrecognizable was one of the many sacrifices he had made to be finally seen by Endeavor.

also, more of this. because this was bittersweet as hell

touya is a drama queen (/pos), you can’t just fit him in a tiny case

if he had been there he would have stolen the show (as he should). you know that time he made a dramatic bow during the final fight? that.

the only thing that could’ve fit in the epilogue would’ve been seeing him eat soba with shouto and/or reading spinner’s book. but anything related to the Todoroki Family Drama™ would’ve required so much more information. you can’t tell me touya wouldn’t have spent an entire chapter roasting endeavor if he had been given the opportunity

my hot take is the reason we never saw anything of Touya in the epilogue is because anything with Touya would require several pages of explanation, you can't stuff it into a tiny frame.

him dying in the thingamabob? would need room to show the family's reactions and especially Shouto's who if this were the case would have failed to save his brother, Rei's about saving her son's life from being killed by Endeavor only for him to still die, and Natsuo, who was the closest to Touya and hasn't interacted with him at all since learning he had survived the fire.

Touya recovering and outliving yet another pessimistic prognosis for his life expectancy? what would he even do with his life, after the people who were his friends were slaughtered and captured by the oppressors they had fought against, and lost? the only reason he didn't share their fates is his relation to Enji.

him cutting off Endeavor? took Natsuo three pages to do, no way to fit it into a brief montage.

Touya escaping with the League? that's a whole another manga of its own.

not 100% accurate bc i can’t make choices

the dabi urge stan to write a fic in which dabi heals (bc i’ll never let the phoenix quirk theory die) and makes sure endeavor knows he’s not forgiven

ignoring canon so hard because if I start thinking about Touya ending up as a plot device, a simple prop for Enji's character arc and getting no future beyond being the highlight of his abuser's change of heart, I will set myself on fire

Twice does all the cooking because Shigaraki tried once and they all had food poisoning, Toga doesn’t know a measuring cup from a teaspoon, dabi only knows how to make kraft dinner, grilled cheese sandwhiches, and cup ramen, spinner absolutely butchers the ingredients, and mr compress doesn’t want to.

Toga tries to get Dabi to have slumber parties with her and Twice where they match pyjamas, eat candy, watch romance comedies, and talk about hot celebrities. somehow Dabi winds up going with little regret because toga gave him a manicure(his nail polish was chipping really badly. The only down side to the situation is that Twice eats too much candy and ends up feeling sick.

Just realised that dabi probably doesn’t know how shouto got his scar. And that is hilarious
