Self Diagnosis - Blog Posts

(tw : brief mention of faking mental health issues)

I think it's valid.

There are many people who can't access an official diagnosis of their mental disabilities for various reasons such as, poverty, being part of another marginalised group (women/poc etc), being a minor with unsupportive or unwilling parents and the list goes on. Some people simply don't want to and I get why. An official diagnosis can limit you in many ways such as travel, healthcare, education etc. An official diagnosis can also make you more prone to ableism from the government, schools and workplaces.

Either way, self diagnosis is extremely important whether you choose to pursue an official diagnosis or not.

(Side note : I don't think it matters in the grand scheme of things if someone fakes a mental disorder for attention. Of course, it is disrespectful and you shouldn't do it but people with mental disorders barely get support anyway so what would they exactly be taking away from us? Stim toys? The only thing I can think of is therapists but there aren't many that specialise in disability so 🤷 I think the only time it could be considered a bad thing is if they're spread harmful misinformation like if you're gonna fake something, at least make it believable. To be honest, I feel bad for those who fake a disorder / disability because they might be so attention starved that they would do that.)

I research about autism a lot lately, because I think I might have it. Idk guys, are all people afraid of using words "all", "always", "everybody" and etc? It can probably be a symptom of autism because common trait of autistic people is "often taking things literally" and maybe I use a lot of "probably", "It can be that", "quited often" because of this.

i honestly feel so invalid and unaccepted because like i’m doing a shit ton of research and taking quizzes and tests to find out if i’m autistic or not. most of them say that i’m most likely to be on the spectrum. i’m trying to talk to my mom about getting an actual diagnosis by a professional but it’s so frustrating and confusing because she doesn’t think i do but im genuinely concerned about myself!! and i honestly feel like im losing my mind. i hope you don’t mind me ranting on about this because i feel like my feelings are invalid and wrong because of my mom and that she doesn’t seem to care about my mental stability at all. again very sorry that this isn’t usually what i post. i hope you guys understand 🫶

My feeling is that in general there is no reason to make a distinction between the ways in which people were (or were not) diagnosed. The main thing is usually that the person identifies with a set of issues and challenges, and their internal voice says: “That’s a lot like me!”

Of course, if a person is facing some kind of challenge related to NOT having an official diagnosis, and they want to talk about it, that’s up to them. But otherwise I can’t really see why it should come up in our discussions.

Also it makes me think: I’m not blind, or deaf, but because of my sensory issues I find it very helpful to read about and discuss things that blind or deaf people experience. Mainly I’m interested in the sense of touch, which it seems to me is neglected by five-sensed people and culture.

Anyhow, my point is: for Tumblr discussions and things of this sort, it matters more that we have something in common. and that we learn from each other. And I would say: our differences may be interesting to discuss; but our differences should not be what define us.

So I’m seeing a new meme I guess? Where posts have (professionally diagnosed) or (self diagnosed) and it’s making me uncomfortable?

There’s a lot of stigma on being diagnosed with mental disorders, illnesses, or the like

People treat it as you trying to get attention or faking it or even ridicule you for it

I’m just worried that this meme is going to turn out horribly for those that use these terms seriously

So please if you do see it can you not make it any bigger?

Sincerely from a self-diagnosed autistic

(You can add to it if you feel the same)

So I was wondering

How old were you when you were diagnosed with depression? Or if you haven't been diagnosed how old were you when you noticed you had it? I was 8 when my grief counselor told my family that I already had full blown depression and anxiety. This is really just to prove to myself and others that it can happen at any age.
