How many times did he stumble out of bed in the morning, going to the kitchens without a thought while the cook let him take food became she couldn't bare reminding him? How many times do you think Merlin went to go clean Arthur's room only to find it unchanged since he last entered? How many times do you think Gwen found him there after she switched rooms because she couldn't bare to be there, but when she passed by Merlin always was? How many times did Merlin light a fire or wait at the desk for Arthur, trying to forget that he wouldn't be in that room ever again?
Chapter 3: Of Farmers and Wives

“So,” said Merlin not thirty minutes later as they were refilling the ewe’s feeders. “How was your night?” Arthur’s state of calm immediately shattered. “It was fine,” he said quickly– but he probably should have picked a more enthusiastic descriptor because Merlin, who’d been slumping about dejectedly over the feed mill, suddenly straightened up and twisted towards him with great interest. “Just fine?” he asked, eyes glinting.

ok i have a dumb Merthur fic idea: Farmer Wants a Wife AU
hear me out:
Arthur is a rich bachelor who owns a farm
Merlin is his farm hand who lives in the local town
He’s been working for Arthur for 3 years- they got off on the wrong foot by insulting each other but since then have become close friends (not that either of them would admit it)
Morgana secretly signs Arthur up to the TV show Farmer Wants a Wife
Arthur has to host 4 beautiful women on his farm and take them on dates (and everything is being filmed)
Arthur starts to realise he misses Merlin- that he would rather be mucking out the stables with him, than on a boring picnic date
Maybe he kisses one of the women and realises he’s not attracted to her and he’s like Oh Shit: Sexuality Crisis
Of course some fun banter between Merlin and Arthur around the farm when they’ve stopped filming for the day- Merlin teases Arthur about the whole Wife thing
Maybe one of the women is Gwen and she Notices how much Arthur talks about Merlin, and she Notices how awful it was when Arthur kissed her, and she puts the pieces together
Maybe Arthur and Gwen become close as friends, and at some point he confides in her (off camera) and she’s like “I know.”
MAYBE ALL THE GIRLS HAVE INDEPENDENTLY FIGURED IT OUT- and they compare notes “yeah, he was SUCH a bad kisser” “definitely gay for his farm hand” AND THEY WORK TOGETHER TO COME UP WITH A PLAN TO GET ARTHUR AND MERLIN TOGETHER
Arthur doesn’t know what’s going on, but the girls keep calling in “sick” and he keeps ending up on romantic dates with Merlin???
Don’t really know how to end this, but of course they end up together, Arthur’s a good kisser when it’s Merlin he’s kissing, he remains good friends with Gwen and the girls, and they make television history

*cue a bunch of hilarious miscommunications*
do you guys think merlin and arthur knows its legal now
concept: Arthur dies at Camlann and Merlin’s magic goes feral and resurrects him right then and there. like, he doesn’t heal him, Arthur is actually dead and Merlin is just like “nope” and bends the laws of life and death for him.
and what if Arthur comes back changed? like maybe he takes something back with him (an ability, some sort of magic?) and Merlin has to help him adjust

celebrating the season by reading Loaded March for the very first time, wish me luck
thinking about all the times Merlin had to go through something deeply traumatic and Arthur had no idea, and Merlin just had to laugh it off and make up a lie
I YEARN for more scenes where Arthur actually notices something's wrong and tries to comfort Merlin (even if he doesn't know the full truth)
Like, I just watched S2E09 and this scene at the end:
Arthur: something's been upsetting you, hasn't it?
and then he tries to cheer him up, and smiles at him like this:
I just need more of this! soft arthur comforting sad merlin
sorry yeah we queer coded your boyfriend. he’s arguing with his brash and emotionally reserved rival over something trivial for comedic effect. they have a special, vaguely suggestive bond that sets them apart. hm? oh uhh. yes they are blue and red
one of my favourite merthur tropes in fanfics is when Arthur and Merlin finally kiss and Arthur gets really bossy.
even better if Merlin pulls back, calls him bossy, then grins affectionately and kisses him and actually follows orders for once
me rn with the silly lil merthur plot line that keeps running around my brain
Rewatching Merlin S1E2, when Merlin is dressing Arthur for his duel and just generally being incompetent because it's like his first day on the job, but imagine:
Merlin: *hands Arthur his helment* great, yeah, I think you’re all set
Arthur: Aren’t you forgetting something?
Merlin: *frowns*
Merlin: Oh, right
Merlin: *kisses Arthur*
Arthur: *turning red* No, you idiot! My sword!
Unrequited Love
I slowly crept behind the door, creaking the tiniest gap open. There he was, padded in armour with nothing else but his kind smile. His eyes twinkled in the dim light, those pools of honey faced a figure of a woman who I couldn't make out.
“My darling Guinivere from the moment I saw, I knew my heart wouldn't beat the same without you. I have all the riches in the land and yet they mean nothing in comparison to you.” he said with such great earnestness. It was as if a dagger pierced my heart. Why must he have feelings for another? Why can’t he love me? As tears threatened to spill, the huge lump in my throat grew more agonising. As I clasped my hand across my mouth, I opened the door by the smallest inch. My Arthur, my sweet Arthur held sweet adoration in his eyes whilst he crouched on one knee. A small wooden box bearing the most gorgeous ring carved of jade and diamonds shone, just like Guinivere’s smile.
“I love you…desperately. So please would you do me the honour of becoming my wife and Queen of Camelot?”
My heart broke: waterfalls drenched my face, evident creases ruined my dress shirt from clutching it too hard. I need to leave now. I can't let Arthur see me like this. He can't see how much I care.
One thing I have always been obsessed with is photos, not just ones I've taken, but the ones where people are oblivious to the fact they have just had a second of their life captured, to be remembered for decades and, when they finally pass, relatives will be able to see them happy and not just forced to smile for a photo. I would always beg to see pictures when I was younger, I didn't care how old they were, I just needed to see the people I loved go through life, It didn't matter how old they were, I was always happy when I got to see them, I always kept a firm grasp on the photos and, if someone were to try and take them away, I would yell and cry, I needed the closure. So when I think about merlin and how there probably wouldn't have been any pictures for merlin to carry around and remember his friends, family and most importantly Arthur, who was his destiny, he was what kept merlin near that lake, he was the one merlin probably would have cared for the most, it's upsetting. Merlin had to stay on earth for 1500+ years and has probably forgotten what Arthur sounds like, or his most important features which he probably wouldn't think were that important before Arthur's death, merlin had to live with the vague memories he had and a blurry image which stayed in his mind. BBC needs to make a season 6, i need to see a happy merlin, they can probably have their kiss in the year 2023
When merlin gets taken off of Netflix just go to BBC iPlayer fellas, it's free of charge and the whole thing is there

The gayest meet-cute in history is S1 ep1 of Merlin, when country bumpkin magic boy arrives in Camelot and instantly starts talking shit to the crown prince
