I absolutely adore these and I'm saving them here for when I'm sad so that I can giggle about all of this its beautiful

An AU where Merlin is literally a God in Mordred’s eyes. Like, a genuine God.

In this AU Mordred and Merlin’s relationship is not fucked up by prophecy. So, everytime, kindhearted Merlin saved Mordred without hesitation. And Mordred grew up in a Druid camp that reinforced the idea that Emrys was a literal god. So naturally, HE WORSHIPPED MERLIN.

Once Arthur became king and magic was legalised, Mordred came to Camelot to become a knight because that was the best way to serve Emrys.

But when he arrived at Camelot, he struggled to comprehend the fact that Merlin was… human???? A very clumsy one, in fact. The rest of Camelot, though might know about Merlin magic, did not know how great ‘Emrys’ actually was so they were just confused, concerned, and/or entertained by Mordred’s ‘crush’ on Merlin.

He would stare at Merlin the entire first meal they had together, and people would be like: awww, Sir Mordred is crushing on Merlin so hard!!

Mordred: Emrys??eats??food?Food??Is ?eaten?by? Emrys?emrys?consumes?meal????

Or when he saw Merlin tripped on the training field

Mordred: i think the area is cursed. Strongly cursed.

Leon: what—

Mordred: THEN WHY ELSE WOULD EMRYS TRIPPED?????

Arthur: So, how have you adjusted to life in Camelot so far? Is there anything that is bothering yo—

Mordred: Merlin

Arthur: what did my stupid manserva- I mean Court Sorcerer do-

Mordred: I saw him drank water today

Arthur:

Mordred: He just drinks water????? From glass?????? Like?? He drank?? Water???? You know??? Literal water????????????? For drinking???HE??needs??water?to??live?why??

Morgana: why did I saw Mordred ran out of the meeting room screaming that you guys are trying to ‘Destroy his faith in his religion’. You knights better not bully him because he is a druid and has magic—

Gwaine: I told him Merlin is not here because he needs to take a shit.

Lancelot: Hey, Mordred, I noticed that Merlin has not received the note I asked you to deliver to him yet.

Mordred: But I already send it to him?

Lancelot:

Lancelot: Tell me how

Mordred: I burned it at the altar

Lancelot: what altar—

Mordred: and pray to him, as one should???

Merlin: WHY IS THERE SOMEONE SCREAMING IN MY HEAD THAT I HAVE AN IMPORTANT MEETING TOMORROW AT NOON!?

Or when they went on a long mission or hunting and Merlin, out of his old habit, made food for the knights

Mordred: ‘this is the most excellent food ever had bestowed on me, I shall never forget about this Emrys. I will pray to you even harder. I am the luckiest Druid to ever live—- ‘

Percival: … is the stew that good?

a painting of Arthur and Merlin from BBC's Merlin reminiscent of Waterhouse's Lamia. Merlin is kneeling in front of Arthur, craning his neck to look at him, entwining his fingers with the King's. Arthur is holding Excalibur in his hand and letting it rest alongside of Merlin's neck. There is magic glowing in Merlin's eyes and he's grasping Excalibur's blade so fiercly that blood is running down the rest of it. Between them is an assortment of lavender (devotion, love, loyalty) and ivy (dependence, endurance). On the ground are skulls overgrown with moss and deadly nightshades (death) growing out of them.

Awww, this is so adorable! *hitting Arthur repeatedly* you’re so stupid, so so stupid.

A drunk Merlin hitting on Arthur and Arthur getting very flustered (and surprisingly pleased) about it.

"Hello, your majesty," a voice slurs to Arthur's right. Oh no.

"Merlin, I was gone for an hour. All you had to do was wait in our room, how did you—" Arthur remembers that he left Merlin with Gwaine. Arthur would very much like to reach back in time and punch himself in the face. "Ah."

"You know," Merlin says, and leans into him heavily. He coughs once and tries to push him off, wrenching his lukewarm drink from him at the same time, "You're very pretty."

"Thank you, Merlin," Arthur responds, averting his eyes in an effort to stay stoic.

"No, really," and that one almost comes out like a purr, all low and secretive. "Especially when you're out of that stupid chainmail."

"Right, well, the chainmail is kind of necessary, Merlin," he manages. Speaking is rapidly becoming... difficult. Especially with Merlin draping his arm around his shoulder and mumbling into his ear.

"Is it?" His breath is hot and smells of alcohol, and Arthur has to shrug him off again.

"You aren't being yourself, Merlin."

The light in his eyes dims a little. But then he blinks and scoots toward him again—this time with an entirely different approach.

"I sometimes wonder," Merlin says with something devilish playing at his lips, "If you choose not to learn how to dress yourself."

Arthur's voice is rough when he speaks. "Why would I do that...?"

"Because," he replies with a grin, "Then... well, I'd have to keep changing your clothes for you."

He feels Merlin's hand dancing across his thigh and grips it, pushing it away. His face is burning, he must be bright pink, and his heart is thudding hard.

"You're going to regret this tomorrow, Merlin. I swear I'll make fun of you until you die."

"Worth it," he mutters as he takes to playing with Arthur's hair. He tries not to think about how nice it feels.

"Right, that's it. Enough. Time to go to sleep," Arthur says with a finality which Merlin can puzzle out, even with a muddy brain that's been addled by alcohol.

"Nooooooo," Merlin whines as Arthur takes his forearm and drags him from the tavern.

As he marches his best friend back to their lodgings, Arthur has to remind himself that princes don't fall for servants.

Dragon merlin au

In this au, Merlin's frequent use of magic is causing a gradual transformation where he slowly develops dragon like traits (long hair, long teeth, etc..)

While he can manage the physical changes with haircuts and filing his teeth, the psychological impact is far more profound. He's becoming increasingly possessive and restless, exhibiting traits of a dragon guarding its hoard.

"Gaius, I don't understand why I feel so ill," Merlin says, his voice strained.

"Merlin, as a Dragonlord, it's possible you're experiencing hoard sickness," Gaius explains. "Dragons possess hoards of treasure and are fiercely protective of them. When deprived of their hoard, they suffer a debilitating fever until they reclaim it."

"A hoard? What could that be?" Merlin asks, bewildered.

"Think, Merlin. Has anything recently captured your attention or become particularly precious to you?" Gaius inquires.

Merlin struggles to recall, his mind clouded by a growing sense of unease.

As the months pass, Merlin's condition worsens. He struggles to fulfill his duties, his energy waning, and his personality shifting. He becomes short-tempered and withdrawn. The knights, Arthur, Morgana, and Gwen notice his decline, attributing it to a lingering illness. Arthur lessens his chores, and everyone gives him space, unintentionally isolating him further.

One night, the concerned group gathers secretly in Gaius's chambers, defying his orders to leave Merlin undisturbed.

"I can't believe we're doing this," Arthur mutters.

"Arthur," Morgana reassures him. "We're here to see Merlin. Besides, if Gaius catches us, we'll say we had urgent concerns."

"Still, this feels..." Arthur trails off.

"Relax, Princess," Gwaine interjects. "Everything will be fine. Don't pretend you don't miss him."

Suddenly, they hear voices and quickly hide. Merlin emerges, followed by a frustrated Gaius.

"I told you, I'm fine!" Merlin insists, his voice hoarse.

"No, you're not!" Gaius retorts.

"I said I'm fine!" Merlin's eyes flash gold, and a nearby vase shatters.

"It's alright, Merlin," Gaius soothes. "Here, try this new potion."

Merlin drinks the potion, then immediately vomits. "Ugh... I'm so sorry, Gaius. I don't know what's happening to me. It feels like I'm losing my mind."

"It's probably nothing," Gaius says, though his expression is troubled. "You just need rest and medicine."

The group witnesses this unsettling scene, their concern deepening. They realize Merlin's "illness" is far more complex than they ever imagined.

I know I'm not the only one who felt uncomfortable with Merlin's powers to compel dragons against their will, particularly with the show centred on Merlin trying to achieve safety and freedom for magic users.

But what if that power goes both ways? Dragonlords may be able to command dragons, but dragons can steer the course of destiny and absolutely wreck the ship.

What if dragons can cause a person monumental levels of predestined pain and suffering, absolutely crush them with the narrative and make not just their hero's journey, but the realisation of their destiny pure unadulterated hell?

Dragonlords who abused their power technically end up achieving their goals, but it's at so great a personal cost that the dragonlords of old were like "yeah, no, we're not gonna fuck with that. How about we just be friends and respect each other?"

Of course, no one was around to warn our poor boy Merlin. My new HC is that his and Arthur's destiny looked so different to the one he expected, and that he suffered so much loss on the way, because he messed with Kilgharrah.

Arthur Pendragon Returns | Angst | Language Barrier | Sad Ending

For @merlinmicrofic with the prompt "frozen"

Arthur returns but Merlin finds he can no longer understand him.

“You can't understand me, so I will say this-”  “I’m sorry I couldn't stay the same.”  “If I was afforded the choice, Merlin, if there were only one thing left of my kingdom, one soul, it would be you.”  “I've lived so long, I've lived too long.”  “So please.”  “You deserve someone who could’ve held on for you.”  “I need you to understand.”

☾ ☾ ☾

A snowstorm, a series of blue arrowheads and an infernal swirl on the television, arrived a few days before the winter solstice. The dead silence, the disappeared roads and finally, the sudden interruption to the electricity called to Merlin’s slow, ancient mind the way the world had once been, quieter, colder.

It was then that he felt Arthur’s impending return, unmistakable, a change in the seismograph.

The lake was solid and as blue as the dawn sky above it.

The ice was singing like steel cables and whale song. He had waited here many times before, mad with certainty and loneliness that this was the day.

But this was the day.

The song rose in tempo, and in a sudden crack, a familiar boat.

Merlin stumbled forward, fell through where the ice was thin and before he knew it, the once king, the future king, was gathering him, shivering, in his arms.

Merlin clutched onto him and in his ear Arthur said-

What were these words? Hard consonants so wholly unfamiliar that Merlin wondered if he had ever understood them, if the same sounds had ever passed his own lips. Emotion broke every other syllable, he could understand the utter relief in them, but the words themselves?

“I don't- Arthur I don't understand.”

***

Before they could understand each other without words, but no longer, not when there was so much to say.

Merlin tried, but his eroded memory had too long forsaken learning. The weeks went on, and in the tense and then pleading sounds that Arthur made, Merlin understood two things: Arthur had been frozen and had emerged from the lake perfectly intact; Merlin however could not breach the surface of his own stagnant pool.

Arthur continued his noises, his hard consonants and the occasional gnashing of his teeth, and Merlin despaired.

***

It wasn’t fair, Merlin knew. Time meant denial was robbed from Arthur’s grieving. Now Merlin was asking him to bury understanding along with their friends. Instead he piled all of that denial onto Merlin’s unyielding tongue.

One day in the dusty, moldy space that Merlin resided in, that he struggled to keep in order with time rushing past him as it did, Arthur snapped. He seized his arms, his eyes wild, wet.

“You’re not trying!”  he cried, angry, in that language Merlin no longer possessed.

“I don't- I’m trying.”

“You're all that's left.”

“I’m sorry, Arthur.”

Sometimes a word would prick Merlin’s ears, and he would hear Welsh, Latin, or else it would stir something in his long memory, but it was recognition without comprehension. The words transformed and melded together, evading his grasp.

“You can't understand me, so I will say this-”

“I’m sorry I couldn't stay the same.”

“If I was afforded the choice, Merlin, if there were only one thing left of my kingdom, one soul, it would be you.”

“I've lived so long. I've lived too long.”

“So please.”

“You deserve someone who could’ve held on for you.”

“I need you to understand.”

Not to Merlin-post in the year of our Lord 2024, but I love Gwen as a character. She goes through too much honestly. She deserves such a good life and so much love. I want to see a spin off show about Gwen's reign as queen because that would be awesome.

FULFILLING THE GREAT PROPHECY

I was always frustrated because I felt like the "Arthur is going to be this great king and unite Albion" thing never came to pass or only kind of did sparingly BUT maybe it's that thing with prophecies where they come to pass in unexpected ways.

So maybe the great prosperity and uniting of Albion happens because of Gwen's peaceful, fair, and progressive reign, which technically happens because Arthur made the choice to marry when she was a commoner. She wouldn't have been on the throne otherwise. I'm calling it. I believe she would be a freaking great queen. With her empathy and intelligence and bravery? Hell yeah!

It's very likely that she had the guts to finally lift the ban on magic during her reign (and all that entails) which Arthur was never able to do because he had trouble /didn't have the chance to work through the negative feeling about magic that had been instilled in him by his father. Merlin was never able to push him to do so because he became too entrenched in supporting the current power structures because he was blinded by his love for and devotion to Arthur. Maybe they could have gotten there in time (there are hints of that), but instead the revelation is made inadvertently and the end of the show happens before they cross that boundary. That's one of the great tragedies of the show. It painfully demonstrates how power corrupts and people can be forced to try to work within a system that is actively harming them, especially when they love and believe in the people entrenched in that system.

Maybe Morgana had a twisted sixth sense about this too because she's peculiarly focused on Gwen being queen for a lot of reasons (SHE EVEN HAS VISIONS ABOUT IT).

Anyway, I'm sure someone has said this before.

Thoughts?
