What the Webb Telescope May Reveal Observing UY Scuti, the Stellar Giant

What The Webb Telescope May Reveal Observing UY Scuti, The Stellar Giant

Relative sizes of the planets in the Solar System and several stars, including UY Scuti: 1. Mercury < Mars < Venus < Earth 2. Earth < Neptune < Uranus < Saturn < Jupiter 3. Jupiter < Proxima Centauri < Sun < Sirius 4. Sirius < Pollux < Arcturus < Aldebaran 5. Aldebaran < Rigel < Antares < Betelgeuse 6. Betelgeuse < NML Cygni < VV Cephei A < VY Canis Majoris (Wittkowski et al. 2012 estimate) < UY Scuti. Credit: Wikipedia

UY Scuti is a supergiant star located in the constellation Scutum, approximately 9,500 light-years away from Earth. It holds the title of being one of the largest known stars, with a size estimated to be around 1,700 times the diameter of our Sun. Despite its immense size, UY Scuti's nature and characteristics remain largely enigmatic. The JWST's high-resolution imaging and spectroscopic capabilities offer a unique opportunity to study this stellar behemoth in unprecedented detail. Read full article here

James Webb Deep Field Image

James Webb Deep Field Image

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope captures the deepest and sharpest infrared image of the distant universe, revealing stunning details of galaxy cluster SMACS 0723. This composite image, taken by Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) over 12.5 hours, showcases thousands of galaxies, including the faintest objects ever observed in infrared. The image, equivalent to a grain of sand held at arm's length, depicts SMACS 0723 as it appeared 4.6 billion years ago, with the combined mass of the galaxy cluster acting as a gravitational lens. Webb's NIRCam unveils previously unseen structures within these distant galaxies, providing insights into their masses, ages, histories, and compositions, and shedding light on the earliest galaxies in the universe. Webb Telescope Finds Water Around Comet 238P/Read In Main Asteroid Belt.

The water vapour from the sublimation of water ice on Comet 238P/Read, as shown in this artist's impression, creates the distinctive tail and hazy coma that distinguishes comets from asteroids. The detection of water vapour by the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope at Comet Read is a significant milestone in the study of main belt comets and in understanding the origin of water on Earth.  Credits: NASA/ESA

Webb's Search For Fomalhaut's Asteroid Belt Unveils Stunning Discoveries

Captured by Webb's Mid-Infrared Instrument (MIRI), this image depicts Fomalhaut's dusty debris disk and its three concentric belts that stretch as far as 14 billion miles (23 billion kilometers) from the star. The telescope's breakthrough imaging technology allowed astronomers to spot the previously unseen inner belts. The labels on the left highlight various features, while the right side showcases a large dust cloud highlighted in two distinct infrared wavelengths, 23 and 25.5 microns. Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, A. NASA Animation Sizes Up the Universe’s Biggest Black Holes

Credit: NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center Conceptual Image Lab

Music: "In the Stars" from Universal Production Music

So, how exactly will the JWST go about studying these mysterious, ultra-dense objects? Well, black holes are known for their intense gravitational pull, which can cause nearby matter to heat up and emit radiation. The JWST's infrared capabilities will allow it to detect and study this radiation in detail, providing new insights into the behavior of black holes.

One of the key goals of the JWST's black hole research is to better understand the process of accretion, in which matter falls into the black hole and releases energy in the form of radiation. By studying this process in different types of black holes, the JWST could help shed light on some of the most fundamental questions in astrophysics, such as how galaxies form and evolve over time.

But the JWST won't just be looking at black holes in isolation. It will also be studying the way that black holes interact with their surrounding environments, including the stars and gas clouds that surround them. This could help us understand how black holes shape the evolution of galaxies and the wider universe.

All in all, the JWST's black hole research is set to be a game-changer for our understanding of the cosmos.

Webb Telescope discovers hints of water vapor in atmosphere of exoplanet GJ 486 b

In a study released on May 01, 2023, Webb Telescope discovers hints of water vapor in the atmosphere of exoplanet GJ 486 b. Read Full article here

Webb Telescope Discovers Hints Of Water Vapor In Atmosphere Of Exoplanet GJ 486 B

The illustration portrays GJ 486 b, a rocky exoplanet located in the Virgo constellation, which revolves around a red dwarf star situated 26 light-years away. Scientists observed the planet's transit in front of the star to search for indications of an atmosphere and discovered possible traces of water vapor. Nevertheless, they advise that although this could indicate the presence of a planetary atmosphere, the water may be present in the cool starspots on the star itself rather than emanating from the planet. Credits: NASA, ESA, CSA, Joseph Olmsted (STScI)

I've Been Doing An Astronomy Internship This Summer, And We Recently Talked About The Space Telescopes!

i've been doing an astronomy internship this summer, and we recently talked about the space telescopes! wanted to personify some of them hehe.

James Webb (they/them): Their shiny poncho thing is inspired by the solar shield. They have a rivalry with Hubble, believing him to be obsolete. However, they secretly are worried they won't be able to live up to his legacy.

Hubble (he/him): His glasses represent the COSTAR instrument that was installed on Hubble to correct it's blurry images. He finds James Webb's attempt at a rivalry amusing, and just wants to become friends with the younger fella and help them out.

Nancy Grace Roman (she/her): A telescope not yet launched, she's an old NRO telescope, and is having trouble adjusting from a life of espionage to one of science.
