i think haters of the secret history just dont understand the point of the novel. its supposed to make you hate the characters. its about the dangers of living for the aesthetic. you dont like how charles' character progressed? Yeah neither did i that was the point. its such a cleverly written novel and theyre such deep characters. take charles again for example. in the beginning his drinking problem wasn't even a problem, it was just a silly quirk of his personality and something that made him the way he was but slowly it became a huge problem, sending him to jail and then to hospital and causing camilla to get unto a lot of trouble with henry and damaging his relationships with francis and Richard, and ultimately causing Henry's suicide. its about having awareness of the concequences of our actions. while it would have been nice for the fully good characters to have killed the inherently bad character of bunny and gotten away with it aided by a clever plan then lived happily ever after that would have destroyed the point of the book. it reflected reality and i think that was one of the beautiful things about the text along with the way it was written (donna tartts prose is unmatched. fight me.) . also the way the characterswere from a moral standpoint changed drastically too. the pov of richard made us agree with the rest of them thanks to the manipulation tactics from henry and while he is the most unreliable of narrators this adds to the effect of the novel.
anyway my opinions on this are VERY strong and i could go on for hours
