I've never made a post like this, but I've had the thought of doing it for a while, so here goes nothing...

These are all the webcomics I'm currently reading!(And why I think you might like them!)

Fantasy High by Dimension 20 & Denaseey

I'm a huge fan of Dropout, and especially Dimension 20. Now, there's an accessible version of the first campaign that pretty much anyone can read and enjoy. from what's been released so far, It's definitely an abridged version of the story, so don't expect it to hit every single point of the campaign. However, it's still a great version of the story. High recommend if you're a fan of the series or just D&D in general.

Clown Corps by Joe Chouinard

This is everything a guy, gal or etc could ask for in a clown-based action series. It's exciting, it's hilarious, and it gets surprisingly deep in the further you get into it (the standard process for most webcomics). If you love clowns, I cannot recommend this enough.

Yellow Brick Ramble by Daisy McGuire

I've always loved the classic Oz books (Or at least the first 3), so I was already sold on a series that took the trans subtext of Ozma and just removed the sub- prefix. However, what I didn't expect was how genuinely close the writing feels to the original story. I'm being genuine when I say there were certain points where I paused reading and went "Wait...Was that from the book?" And, I gotta say, if you're writing for Oz is so good that I genuinely can't tell what's original and what's from L. Frank Baum himself, I'd say you did a pretty good job. High recommend if you love the original books.

Emmy the Robot by Dominic Cellini

This is my current favorite webcomic. Full-stop. I'm a massive fan of robots, and this comic scratches that itch so hard that it's become a rash. The entire atmosphere of it, from the characters to the story, gives me such a warm feeling that I haven't felt since I was a kid. It feels like the lost Pixar movie I've never seen but's always been with me. I might be overselling it a bit, but the point still stands that I love it. The only minor nitpick I might have is it takes a little bit to get to the real conflict, since the first 50 issues, give or take, are mostly just setup and slice-of-life. Though, I personally don't mind that. Huge recommend for pretty much everyone. If it doesn't seem interesting to you, I don't know what to say, man. Can't help you...

I’m watching bit compilations of the Fantasy High campaign(s) for Dimension 20 at the minute, and I’m watching one for Junior Year ep 16, and I love …

There’s a bit where some of Kipperlilly’s motivations for hating the party are revealed, and it’s revealed that she’s jealous that Riz’s father was killed, because she wants a cool and tragic backstory and thinks that her lack of it has kept her back at the adventuring academy while they had an advantage. And Siobhan, as Adaine, without batting an eye:

“And her response to that was to be mad at us, and not to kill her parents?”

To which the others respond … Okay, Adaine, that’s the sociopath test! And just general slightly spooked humour.

And I just love that … You can really see the girl who on her first day at school had a fight break out on top of her and wound up killing a lunch lady with a ladle. You can see the girl who did have to kill her abusive father after he casually murdered her sister. This is all coming from trauma, but she puts such a casual … Like, girl, get with the program on it. There’s such disdain for Kipperlilly whining about it instead of actually doing something.

I love that it is genuinely mostly a joke, she’s not seriously advocating for murder here, but it also does say quite a bit about Adaine. About her trauma and her pragmatism and her lingering perfectionism and her rather enforced nonchalance about the potential necessity of parent murder and her distinct attitude that if a problem presents itself, then you fix it, doing whatever you have to do in the process.

There’s just a sense that, you know, if Kipperlilly has decided to be evil and has decided that she’s fine with killing people, which we have proof she has, why is she not going with the logical solution to her problem? If you have decided that you’re fine with murdering people and that morality is no longer a stumbling block, why are you not doing the most efficient thing to solve your stated problem? If you’re going to be evil, be better at it.

Adaine would be an absolutely terrifying bad guy. And also probably needs more counselling.

Rewatching Fantasy High and remembering that one of my favorite things about Brennan as a DM is that he consistently rewards kindness. Show some empathy to that random werewolf? You get a trusted mentor. Save that kid who was just trying to kill you? Lifelong friend. Rescue your evil sister? Redemption and shared healing. The final fight of Starstruck is full of people who showed up to help because, at some point, a character chose to be kind when they didn't have to. Even in brutal universes, kindness is harder to give, but it's still possible and still pays off in material ways. I love it.

in sweetness there is strength, there is sadness, there is sorrow. in sweetness there is humor, grief, there is wild anger and loud joy and a spectrum of feelings in between. in the raucous cheering shared while watching with friends, to the quiet moments in twilight hours wrapped in blankets and heavy feeling, through all struggle and triumph, i am left knowing in sweetness there is hope.

there are a lot of things to talk about, but all i want to say is that even though i fucking knew brennan was gonna pull some dramatic of mice and men speech bullshit, he still absolutely sideswiped me in the last twenty minutes of the episode like he always manages to do

shoutout to zac oyama for choosing to play a way of the long death monk, aka one of the toughest fucking characters to kill in dnd history. death might have taken lapin cadbury, but to cumulous rocks it’s a joke

i’m filing an injury claim against dimension 20 because the whiplash in moods this episode is hurting me more than last episode hurt my feelings

everyone is talking about how amethar is probably going to die, but i feel in some instinctual, miserable part of my heart that this is where we say goodbye to lapin. i hope above all else that people will be clowning on me in two hours for thinking something so dumb

when belizabeth bastard pulled her move, i immediately started trying to think of an intricate legal defense to buy more time. my friend shot out of his seat and yelled “it’s time to deck that bitch” and honestly that’s the dichotomy of dnd, baby

we got gorgug and fabian quality time. riz and fig pulled some super spy hijinks. adaine asked for her big sister and was listened to. kristen ascended to sainthood. two fathers died. gilear canonically has a massive shlong. i wept and laughed and wept some more. i can’t wait for friday.

god, every episode of fantasy high live i think to myself “wow, this is the best and most exciting episode ever, nothing can ever get close to this” and think about it all week until the next episode where i think the exact same thing and now i wonder if ill ever accept the fact that fantasy high is a consistently great show and i don’t have to shield myself from potential disappointment because it knocks it out of the park every time
