Star Trek: Voyager, J/7: The Measure Of Logic - Chapter 16 Posted

“You still believe there are survivors,” she declared, her words flat as her lips thinned. “The statistical likelihood of survivors is less than–” “I don’t care about statistics, Seven,” Kathryn cut in, shaking her head. “Survivors or not, Starfleet or not, we’re not alone here. It explains the ladder, the door–and this…thing.”

Relationship: Kathryn Janeway / Seven of Nine

Synopsis:

After Captain Janeway contracts an illness during an expedition to an uninhabited planet and orders USS Voyager to leave her behind, a certain hardheaded Astrometrics officer isn't so keen on abandoning her Captain. As Janeway and Seven learn to navigate the strange new dynamic forming between them, it becomes apparent that the planet they now call home has a much deeper story to tell--one that seems to defy logic, reality, and even the natural order of time itself. ----- This is a standalone fic but can be read as additional worldbuilding to my "For the Optics" series. Subversion Theory Chapter 9

“If I were to let my crew board your ship, I would be killing them,” Michael explained, a part of her struggling with the concept that she was trying to appeal to a monster. “Even if we survived you, we wouldn’t survive the Federation cull.” “Then there is no quandary,” Control replied. “You are already lost.”

-----

Three years after the attack on Section 31 Headquarters, Control has the Federation on the brink. When the USS Discovery begins receiving encrypted transmissions from someone claiming to be Starfleet who seems to know everything about their enemy, Captain Michael Burnham sees one last shot to turn the tide. But as Control's obsession with her deepens and the boundaries between ally and adversary begin to unravel, its objectives evolve into something far more dangerous--and lead Michael to question if she's still in control of her own game.

The Real MVP Here, Carrying Me Through Another Major Life Event. 15 Years With This Dude And I'm So Grateful

The real MVP here, carrying me through another major life event. 15 years with this dude and I'm so grateful for every moment he's here.

My father's Honor Walk was held yesterday, and we are able to move forward now. I try to take comfort in the knowledge that he may save at least three lives, but the experience and attention that comes with being the family of a donor has been quite overwhelming for someone who is an introvert and a recluse on a good day.

I've gotten a bit of headspace to finish up the next chapter of Subversion Theory as I try to have some moments to take my mind off everything. It's been difficult not to have this outlet, and I suppose that's why I'm writing this here. My father was more well-known and more well-liked than I ever knew, and fielding calls and messages between the three of us has been exhausting. I am grateful to have a night of quiet in my home with my pets and some space to breathe and process on my own before the actual service this weekend.

Still, my mind is on something else as well.

My father was an engineer--someone who enjoyed solving problems as much as creating problems to solve--and in classic fashion, upon searching for his credentials to access his computer, etc., my brother and I found what appears to be a 100+ page long cypher.

I'm uncertain which is more likely: he left it for us to solve because it's important, or he left it for us to think we needed to solve it but it's actually nothing important at all.

In either case--that's my dad ❤️

A note about updates

Writing has always been my solace. It has gotten me through good times and bad. Tonight I learned my father passed away, which will understandably shift my update schedules as my mother and my brother and I work to process this news.

I remain committed to finishing my works, as I still have many stories to tell. Writing is my own form of therapy, of catharsis--my form of escaping the stresses of daily life which now seem small and trivial compared to what I reflect on tonight.

Though I have not yet absorbed what's happened, I can say while I am still here tonight and still functioning for the moment that I implore you always take photos and videos of your loved ones. Save the funny voicemails and voice notes. Cherish them like the treasures that they are because one day the real thing may be gone in the blink of an eye, and they may be all you have. I am grateful for my foresight to have done so with my father. I had not spoken with him in a few weeks, but I know now that if I need to hear him, to see him in some form, I can.

I am fortunate to have lived 34 years on this earth before needing to face this loss. There are many who lose one or both parents much sooner. I am fortunate that he and my mother raised me to be independent, to be free-thinking, and to live openly as a LGBT woman, and that they always loved and supported me in spite of how they might have struggled to understand it. But know that no matter how long you have with your family, your friends, or your pets--it is plainly, simply, never enough time.

I am grateful to everyone who has followed my stories. I am grateful for your kudos, your comments, and your presence. Your support is meaningful, it has value, and I am grateful.

Writing has served to keep me going more than once over the years. It will do so again, and it will be especially important to me now.

Thank you for reading.

My Monday musings: I'm kind of surprised this isn't a bigger ship.

Michael and Nhan make a lot of sense to me. They went through the wringer together, they went to the future together, and Nhan was called in later to keep Michael in line because she knew her and how she would operate. Michael knew she would make the tough calls if she couldn't because that's what she'd done, and Michael accepted it and trusted her anyway. When push did come to shove, Nhan was convinced to forego her "duty above all" mindset and both of them grew from that experience.

It seems like Michael and Nhan had a way stronger foundation than Michael and Book, whose foundation the show skipped almost entirely and built through exposition once Michael and Discovery were finally reunited.

Say what you want, but USS Discovery is by far the most beautiful Star Trek ship, and there aren't enough pics of it out there. That side by side with the Enterprise though... <3

And for a fic writer in this fandom, it's also damn hard to describe that spore drive jump without a few picture references.

3-Day Weekend Incoming!

& all the writing goals I've got planned =D

This was the worst and most tiring work week, but I somehow still managed to get Subversion Theory's new chapter up, and The Measure of Logic's should be up sometime tomorrow.

The Ithaca Mandate is nearing completion as well, and I'll be looking for beta readers for that in the near future. If you're interested in sapphic hard sci-fi romance and speculative fiction, please reach out to me.

The Farm at Wardenwood Hollow is my newbie and the lowest priority, since I haven't even finished outlining it yet, but she, too is coming along nicely ^^

Sometimes I get writing and realize people probably assume I am depressed and anxious and never leave my house--okay well actually the last one might be true but other than that, in reality I'm just out here having discussions about temporal mechanics and emergent sentient behavior with her:

Kelpien Folklore Snippet from Subversion Theory's Upcoming Chapter

Kelpien Folklore Snippet From Subversion Theory's Upcoming Chapter

“The elders taught us that Hell was a moon that fell into the sea. For seven days the water boiled, and when it finally cooled, the tides carried the moon back to the shore as stones. When the first Kelpiens left the sea and walked upon the shore, the stones cut their feet and they bled. So they fashioned hard soles to walk over the stones, but the stones lodged in the tread and were carried across the world. "Now we say, ‘One cannot know the peace of soft earth if they have never walked upon sharp stones. And if ever you walk with light feet, pray it is not that the stones have been lost, but that you have learned how to carry them.’”

It hung there before them, silent and still as if time had long ago seized it and then stopped.

"Do you recognize it?" Seven asked, a slight quake in her words.

The Captain shook her head.

“It’s not the same one,” she said. “But it’s too damn similar to be a coincidence.”

Sitting here, trying to finish up my new chapter with Ira chilling on my shoulder. Then I notice he's looking at something.

What's he looking at?

THAT IS THE WORLD'S BIGGEST HARVESTMAN SPIDER ON MY BED CRAWLING RIGHT AT ME.

Now, mind you, I'm a farm girl, and I do have a lease agreement with the spiders in my house. If I can see they are paying rent by eating bugs, they can stay. BUT NOW THERE IS A STIPULATION THAT THEY MAY NOT RELOCATE TO MY BED.

Annnnnnyway. I scooped up said spider with the remote and not-so-graciously relocated it to the floor and then tracked it with a flashlight for the next 5 minutes until it was an acceptable distance from my bed.

Happy Friday??

Saw a debate about using s' or s's at the end of a character's name whose name ends in s to show possessive.

My conclusion: it depends on the style guide you're using, and whether you are an ancient prophet (???) holding a stick that belongs to Moses or a friend of Moses holding a stick that belongs to Moses. Also, just be consistent.

I will only use s' and I will die on this hill.

Subversion Theory Chapter 7

Discovery was not a threat by firepower alone, but Control had learned to never underestimate her Captain. Sufficient compression turned resistance to violence. A rat caught in a snare would still dare bite the spring.

You ever write a really awesome sentence and then just stare at it for a while like, "Damn. I wrote that?!"

And then every other sentence ends up looking like a drunk text and you realize you've somehow offended yourself.

“You’ve done this before,” Janeway said in something tight and quiet like a whisper. “It is a logical remedy to attempt.” The Captain smiled a bit. “Always logic with you, is it?” she asked. Seven’s hand stilled, just for a second, while she contemplated the answer. “Not always.”

“That looked a bit like a bad re-entry, didn’t it?” Kathryn asked the ex-Borg, who was toying with a strand of the cords at her own waist. “Certainly didn’t look like a meteor.”

“I witnessed identical phenomena on 11 separate occasions this morning, each occurring between 3 and 5 minutes from the previous event,” Seven explained, glancing at Janeway. “I do not believe this is a natural occurrence.”

Star Trek: Voyager, J/7: The Measure of Logic - Chapter 11 Posted

https://archiveofourown.org/works/62063797/chapters/164361526

Seven swallowed tightly as she remembered the way the Captain had flinched when she’d reached to tend to her head, and she wondered if it was for the same reasons Seven had so hurriedly pulled away. Did the Captain fear that hand in the way Seven did? Did she have nightmares of Seven losing control, of Seven reverting back to her most primal Borg instincts and seizing her individuality, possessing her and supplanting her will with Seven’s own? It was simply unacceptable to touch anyone with her Borg hand without prior consideration– especially Captain Janeway–and yet, she had done it. Like a mindless, licentious drone Seven of Nine had allowed the single most dangerous part of her to come in contact with the Captain without conscious intent.
