Can we kill therapy-speak in fanfic?
Don’t get me wrong here. I’m not saying your characters can’t be familiar with therapy keywords. But the use of it in fanfic is just killing off any sort of real, emotional stakes in certain fics. *cough* the my hero fandom
I’ll be real with you; I don’t want my characters to approach a situation with an acute awareness for any possible triggers or emotional responses in an attempt to build rapport with another character who has experienced severe trauma and/or abuse. And sure, let’s say that it is a professional, whose job it is to approach these situations. That doesn’t mean you have to write them like a mental health textbook vs a textbook victim of trauma.
For example; “Aizawa stepped back, not wanting to trigger any sort of trauma response from the abused teenager.”
Yeah, sure. Aizawa is a professional who, as a professional hero, probably has education in dealing with situations like this. But the way it is written is clinically detached, cold, and also way too professional from a man who has probably attended a total of one therapy session on mandate after witnessing the death of one of his best friends (which he never got over btw).
When you want to write a character who is attuned to other people’s needs and fears, try using less therapy bingo words, and be more descriptive of the emotions of the scene.
Instead; “Aizawa carefully stepped backwards, attempting to show he meant no harm. He knew how easy it was to scare a starving alley cat, you would be surprised how the same logic applied to a starving teenager.”
See? Isn’t it so much more soulful? So much easier to connect with? Sure, the first passage got the point across: Aizawa is aware that the kid he’s approaching is likely a victim of something traumatic, so he is approaching it as such. But the average human doesn’t have the dialogue of an occupational therapist, so writing situations like the characters are occupational therapists, kills off any sort of relatability for readers who don’t attend weekly therapy sessions. And even for people who do, it feels more like sitting in the armchair instead of absorbing yourself in the worlds and stories you’re trying to tell.
I’m not saying to ditch the mental health awareness altogether. Sure, having emotionally stunted characters create for interesting stories, but you can tell just as compelling of a story without having to resort to textbook wording. Instead, use that therapy foundation to build something more around your characters. Because using the therapy speak is just the same as telling, and not showing.

My Y/n x Aizawa Crack Fic:
Single mom Y/n Shinso and Shoto Aizawa.
Y/n had Hitoshi as a teenager with a psychopath, and Hitoshi’s quirk manifested while trying to save her from literally being murdered by him. (Dark ik)
This caused Y/n not to trust men, and she never brings back dates to her house unless it's serious, which it never reaches that point.
She meets Aizawa after trying to pick up her son from late training (going home for the weekend maybe) and Eri is also there, and everybody gets introduced. But nothing really sparks there, just friendly talk.
However, on a date goes wrong, Y/n gets stood up at the bar; the same bar Aizawa just so happens to be at while babysitting Midnight and Mic, with the support of sober Toshinori.
They end up talking, and he ends up walking her back to her place (just walking mkay). And she is completely fine with it cause it's her son's teacher, yknow. But holy shit this is her son's teacher, and she kinda of likes him and he kinda likes her.
Hitoshi has always been fine with her going on dates; I mean, none of the men really lasted long enough for him to see. That was until he heard a man's voice in the kitchen after his mom late date. He freezes internally. A man in his home means shit is serious, but not to the point of them meeting cause he heard the man's car leave shortly after.
He tries to question you, reaching for any information you might give about the guy, and you're just tight-lipped, saying that if not, his business unless it becomes serious.
You're always cautious with what time to bring Aizawa home for a stay-in date, never doing it unless Hitoshi stays at the dorm.
He is going crazy trying to draw conclusions on who it may be. And it just so happens, the mystery man slips up and leaves a jacket. Wafting up the kitchen up of sandalwood and vanilla cologne.
Of course, the jacket is gone by the next day, but Hitoshi swears he's smelled that specific cologne before.
And so when he walks the halls of U.A and smells that same cologne. He quickly snaps his neck towards its direction.
"No fucking way." He says as he stares directly to Present Mic. Who just so happened to have stole Aizawa's cologne that day cause he forgot to spray some before work. LMAO.
It takes a lot for Hitoshi to be baffled, and this was his breaking point. He storms over to Present Mic and grabs his shoulders.
"Please for the love of all my sanity, tell me you're not the man my mom is dating." Hitsohi says as he explains his evidence to him.
Mic had suspected Aizawa to be seeing someone but not a student’s mother. So in Mic fashion, he just starts fucking screaming. Causing a few bloody ear drums in the halls.
Then his quirk is nullified by none other than the motherfucker (literally) himself.
"What's with the rucus?" Aizawa glares at the blonde.
"Shinso thinks I'm dating his mom because of the cologne I'm wearing, care to take a wiff." Mic says smirkingly as he just found out his friends biggest secret.
Aizawa doesn't even need to smell. He knew his damn bottle at his desk was missing. And although he's holding his composure on the outside, he's just thinking, 'Shit. Y/n is going to freak.'
Aizawa sighs, stalling trying to find the words because it's either he tells the kid or Mic spills the beans.
"What's going on here?" Y/n appears, with none other than the infamous jacket, intertnally panicking considering Aizawa said it be the perfect time to give it back to him; guess not.
Hitoshi lets go of Mic and nudges him towards his mom.
"Go on. Grab your jacket."
"What are you about, man. I don't wear anything but my signature leather."
“Why else would my mom be hear with a man’s jacket that smells exactly like you, huh?!”
“Hitoshi, honey relax, please.”
“You’re not even going to deny it!?”
At this point, Shinso is fully tweaking out. Any spec of his normal composure is just gone; which Y/n and Aizawa are secretly finding funny.
“It’s not his jacket honey” you nervously laugh out fiddling with the jacket, unable to find words to tell him that you’re dating his mentor.
Aizawa sees this and decides to take the reins of this disaster, after all, he did leave the jacket in the first place.
“It’s mine. And the only reason Mic smells like it is because he’s a thief.” He says, taking the jacket from his girlfriend’s hand while glaring at the blonde culprit.
“What.”
“I’m taking this as my cue to leave..peace! Nice meeting you Momma Shinso” Mic says awkwardly between the baffled silence between his friend and his student. He quickly leaves.
Y/n and Aizawa exchange glances before looking to the baffled boy. Shinso still in the process of how he should be feeling.
Relieved that he won’t have megaphone siblings, but also aghast at the fact that the person he viewed as a father figure is actually not far from being it.
“I think we broke him.”
“Shut up. You’re the one who left the damn jacket, this is all you. Hitoshi honey? Are you alright?”
Even after all the stuff with his bio dad, Shinso never thought that he would ever say the words that are about to come outta his mouth.
“I think I need a therapist.”

Ever since the camping incident, Bakugo had been feeling confused, bewildered, a little angry, confuzzled, tricked, fooled, bamboozled, and unhinged. Things just weren’t making sense to him. It was like he had woken up that morning to find that his dad had an anger problem and his mother had become the sweetest creature on earth. Or gravity had shifted so that he could walk on the ceiling.
Why had Izuku saved him? It didn’t make sense. Midoriya didn’t even like him, didn’t even acknowledge his presence when they were standing in the same room. Sure, Midoriya had saved him before, but that was different. This time he was inviting himself to a world of pain. Bakugo had been scared, but if he could do it all over again, he would have had Midoriya stay. The kid had broken arms for goodness' sake.
“I can't believe that we won,” Bakugo said as he looked at Iida and Uraraka.
“I can, we work well together. Poor Kirishima. He had two very uncooperative people on his team. It was no surprise we beat them.” Uraraka said.
“Yes, it was their lack of teamwork the caused them to fail. If they had worked together, then we would have undoubtedly lost.” Iida said.
“We should do something to celebrate.” Bakugo found himself suggesting. He almost clapped a hand over his mouth. He looked at the ground, not wanting to see their faces when they told him no. If he was lucky, they would be nice and try to think up reasons why they couldn’t. Uraraka and Iida made eye contact and they smiled at him. Unknown to anyone. Uraraka and Iida had made an agreement to help get Bakugo out of his shell.
“Yeah, that sounds like fun.” Uraraka said.
“We could go to the library to study!” Iida said. Bakugo and Uraraka stopped and looked at him weirdly.
“If we want to excel at the things we have been doing then we must study more!” Iida explained, chopping at the air.
“Okay then, let's go study,” Bakugo said.
