I suppose it's worth pointing out that, hypothetically, Byler could not happen. It wouldn't be because we were blind, or stupid, or overly hopeful, or anything like that. All the evidence is, indeed, there. However, the Duffers, again, hypothetically, could decide not to go with it for one reason or another. They could have Mike reject Will. They could use it simply to drive Will's gay coming-of-age story arc, including him learning to "move on." They could use it merely to make Will vulnerable to Henry, allowing him to be taken again. They could have one of them die (unlikely, given what we know). They could even have it never even be directly addressed.

However, none of this changes how bad this writing would be in this hypothetical universe.

They will have spent the better part of a decade building up a slowburn rejection. It wouldn't be any old slowburn rejection, though. It would be the slowburn rejection of a gay teen who did nothing but experience trauma and rejection since the very first episode, and even before. We will have gotten to see little glimpses into how happy he could be, but ultimately walk away knowing he will never be truly happy with the only one who would likely ever truly understand him.

I can't say that I've ever seen a slowburn rejection depicted on-screen in the first place. The fact that the rejection would come at the expense of a gay kid would be insensitive at best and homophobic at worst.

I choose to believe the Duffers are not that insensitive. I choose to believe that Noah, despite him seeming to enjoy playing a suffering person, wouldn't want Will to finish his story heartbroken. I choose to believe the writers know what they've been doing, not having fallen ass-backwards into a gay love story.

He hasn’t been civilised in 4 years, his entire teenage experience consists of living on a boat and sleeping rough. The most stable bed he has was probably in Ba Sing Se he probably will just nap anywhere.

He has customer service experience which means he probably uses his customer service voice on his minsters.

Additionally he probably just wanders into to kitchen to get his own snacks and tea because he forgets what servants do.

He probably has no idea why he can’t just chase after an assassin he used to hunt the avatar for Agnis sake why is the captain of the guard demanding he stay in his room he’ll find the guy first (he’s probably right)

Katara probably has a free pass on Eco terrorism because what’s he going to do challenge her, she’ll beat his ass.

If he saw a minster doing something shady he will either invite lady Beifong to detect their BS or commit B&E and look for evidence himself.

He somehow found a baby dragon and raises it.

He will be far to willing to give Kyoshi island anything they want cause he feels bad and Suki scares him.

He randomly insisted on giving some earth kingdom village 100 ostrich horses.

The Avatar will just show up call him Hotman and demand the go on adventures and the Firelord will just dip because he’s been confined to long and has the Zoomies.

He takes far to much advice from Sokka and will genuinely believe if someone doesn’t get Sokkas plans they must be an idiot because Sokka is 16.

Sokka and Zuko also get into a lot of teenage rebellion phases by accident.

Toph just walks in breaks a wall of his palace and demands a field trip that always involves the Firelord having to explain himself to the cops.

He somehow knows every dangerous teen in the world and they all come for tea uninvited.

He has broken into both the NWT and Ba Sing Se.

He has a really well documented facial scar and official portraits but still disappears to be Lee the tea guy like no one knows.

i managed to find some motivation deep down to make fanart :D this is supposed to be them in s5 in a sort of apocalypse mode

this is my first fanart so i wanted to go go all out with the details so these are some lil things i added:

ofc i made mike have more blue tones and will more yellow tones, i even used a blue and yellow overlay at the end, but i added small hints of green to show they might get closer in s5

I gave them goggles to reference s2 when mike, max, dustin, steve and lucas wore scarfs and goggles for protection and for a more apocalypse vibe to suit what s5 will most likely be like, but i made will's goggles blue and mike's goggles yellow to sort of symbolise that they are on eachother's minds lol

lil paint stains on wills trousers and i made them look a bit long to make it look like he maybe got them from jonathan

obviously they both have headphones with their favourite music ready in case they get vecna'd

they both have blue plaid patches to show that they probably both ripped their clothing during some epic scene and they stitched their clothes up with the same cloth

mike has a green triangle patch pointing at will lol and i made a lot of triangle imagery as well

will's painting in his green bag

mike has a small town boy shirt

will has more blue in his clothing than mike has yellow, which i thought could be because will is probably borrowing mikes clothing since most his clothes are in cali

and lastly this one is a bit vague but if you know flickergate then you know the importance of mike's backpack and i added one yellow pocket that looked like a letter to show that the letter is in there

and thatss about it hope you guys like it and dont think im crazy :)
