Fourth Wing Characters And Their Red Flags (Iron Flame Spoilers)

Violet: really bad at basic math (6+1=??), constantly interrupts people when they’re about to spill the tea, caused a questionable stain on the Tyrrendor Throne.

Xaden: unresolved mommy issues, really bad at 20 questions, stuck in his emo phase, has Endgame by Taylor Swift on repeat so much it seeps into his vocabulary, inappropriate use of the communal gym showers, self-sacrificial to a fault.

Dain: patchy beard, memory thief, used his nepo baby connections to get the wingleader position even though he sucks at it, has a low key crush on Xaden (the true enemies to lovers all along).

Jesinia: writes Xaden & Violet fanfiction with explicit scenes during work hours.

Andarna: forgets to take her melatonin and makes it everyones problem.

Tairn: major exasperated dad energy, v emotional and impulsive, unresolved trauma around Naolin, superiority complex when it comes to gryphons.

Sgael: Not that good at making choices.

Nolon: HIPAA violations for sure, was the true weakest link all along.

Caroline Ashton: dared to be in the book more than Garrick???? Literally wtf.

This scene in ACOFAS is iconic. ICONIC! This was such a respectful, kind thing to do Az did. Even though they’re a family and super informal, it re-iterated how much he does pay attention to Elain, her presence, her efforts to be part of the family. (ALSO, CAN WE TALK ABOUT HOW THIS WAS SUCH A HUSBAND THING TO DO - yes one of my headcanons is that Elriel is going to get a human wedding LOL)!!

The fact that it was clear he meant, wait for Elain to sit before eating, the fact that nobody began eating till she served herself, the fact that after she said hello to him she excused herself to fix her hair and apron, the fact that at this dinner table, Az breaks the tension between Elain and Amren… it’s so fascinating and sweet to see how innately he seems to be aware of her feelings her thoughts. Even if he doesn’t know what she’s thinking, he always seems to be trying to understand. Which is more than can be said for most of the IC, at the moment.

And in this same scene, when Rhys tells Feyre that Az told everyone to wait because he’s sensitive to how women are treated because of his mom (which I fully do believe!!) but then doesn’t seem to be able to connect the dots that this moment is very much about Elain when Feyre very obviously pokes holes in his explanation… SIGH. Rhys unintentionally pulls the wool over what is obvious to Feyre.

Sometimes I feel as though Rhys misunderstands Az’s feelings for Elain as purely physical. Perhaps he doesn’t expect it, perhaps he doesn’t want to face that he is asking his brother not to pursue the person he loves for political reasons. As if Az hasn’t been emotionally tapped into Elain’s every emotion, laugh, helping her heal from her trauma, from the second she arrives in Velaris. How in the midst of everything he tried to be her FRIEND, he wanted to and did save her from Hybern, the necklace, the talking about her garden plans. How Az seems to care for Elain in a way where he ‘sees’ her. And it’s understood how important this is for Elain, (who is ironically now a Seer) - to be seen. She commented much earlier in ACOWAR, how Graysen ‘saw’ her when nobody else did. When Az comes for her in Hybern, she ‘devours’ the sight of him, even says the words ‘You came for me.’ I always found Az’s response to her words, a mere incline, cock of the head so.. telling. As if it was unfathomable that he wouldn’t come for her, as if he was implying that it made all the sense in the world for him to be there for her and get her home, unharmed and safe. He sees her, he notices her, puts her first, prioritises her, is as aware of her laughter as he is of her sadness.

And that is WHY it isn’t purely ‘physical.’ And I know that when Elain and Rhys comes to a head about everything (because let’s be honest, Elain is going to pop off at Rhys for interfering, albeit unintentionally, with her choice, and maybe even at Az if he doesn’t tell her). And Feyre and Nesta will be right behind her and things will work out because Az and Elain deserve to have a happy ending, just as much as everyone else in this damn story.

The Off Limits Rule (It Happened in Nashville, #1) REVIEW

I am aware that the author tried and poured her blood sweat and tears into this novel so I will TRY to tone it down (that's a lie. I won't tone it down), but if you loved this book, or if you are the author themself, then you should probably stop reading here because this is about to get toxic.

Go read LITERALLY anything by Elle Kennedy. For gods sake even Emily Henry is better than this (and that's saying a lot because I gave It Happened One Summer 1 star. This is LOWER than one star, GoodReads, please add ZERO stars because SOME BOOKS DO NOT even deserve 1 star) DONT waste your time on this crap when other authors are doing it sm better smh. I swear to god this is the SHALLOWEST. CRINGEST. MOST ANNOYING AND UNREALISTIC BOOK IVE EVER READ IN THE HISTORY OF CONTEMPORARY ROMANCE and that's saying a lot because I spent this YEAR reading NOTHING BUT contempt and romcoms and bad smut and okay fine maybe also a lot of mafia crap but you get my point. The MC was annoying as fuck. Like ma'am you have a child, you don't get to act like a brat all day. I get that you're like 23 and supposed to have fun but you decided to be a mother so ACT like it. Throughout the whole book, Lucy acted like a spoiled teenager with a problem with everything. I feel so sorry for her child for having her as a mom. And having the child was totally unnecessary. Mentions of him were so random and convenient. And SOMEHOW despite being unemployed, Lucy can hire a baby sitter (which she said was expensive as fuck) and can sent the child to daycare (which she ALSO said was expensive as fuck) so like ???? Poor child is being used as the most plot device-y plot device. And Lucy was already annoying as fuck (description in caps to show that Lucy's cute 'n perky just makes me wanna punch her 🙂) but FINE she's a stereotypical WOMEN (more like immature pre teen but we'll stick to what the book says) she gets to be happy and perky and think in all caps. But the GUY jesus christ the GUY he's literally the girl but without the caps 🤦‍♀️ So like perky happy guy goes: ima flirt because OH YAY that's what guys do! But OH NO! She's off limits! HEY HER BROTHERRRRRRR 'n my ROOMIE! Ima date your sis. You mad? Dat's fine cuz TRUE LOVE!!! YAY *confetti confetti* *someone pukes* HOW did people manage to stomach this and even give it five stars???? And the dialogue. OH GOD, the dialogue was so cringy I almost cried from second-hand embarrassment.

“You two do seem pretty different. And you definitely look nothing alike.” Why did I add that last part? Her nose crinkles again with an uncomfortable smile. “Well, most people think he’s pretty hot, so I don’t quite know how to take that.”  I squint one eye. “Are you fishing for a compliment? Trying to get me to flirt with you again?” Her smile drops, and now she has owl eyes. The blush is back. “What? No! I was just saying a fact, not at all fishing. I don’t even really like compliments because I never know what to do with them, and—” ”

Sweetie, stop before you embarrass yourself. (New Flash: they didn't listen) And OWL EYES. OWL FUCKING EYES. STAWP. And all the descriptions. I can't even-- “I step back, pressing myself fully against the scratchy concrete side so I don’t accidentally jump the man stopping a mere three inches away. He smiles down at me and then raises both hands to cup my face. IT’S REALLY HAPPENING?! That’s my uterus screaming this time, and I really hope he can’t hear it. It sounds like a desperate old hag.” Um what? This was literally a random page. Now imagine near 300 pages of THIS. I don't even know what to say.

Fic Writing on Tumblr - Tips

Hello friends! I'm sure there's a million of these style posts floating around the good ole hellsite, but I thought I'd make a little post to tape up on our corner of the internet for any of the writers (old and new) that are interested in some tips for posting fic on tumblr 💕

Tip #1 - Always Use a Read More

This is crucial if you actually want people to reblog your fic. People don't generally want to subject their followers to scrolling through an entire chapter. I know it may seem like you're more likely to "hook" readers by putting all the story up front, but people who may have ordinarily read your fic may be disinclined simply because you decided not to follow this curtesy. As a general rule, I always put a "read more" on any fic that exceeds 500 words.

Tip #2 - Be Mindful of Using Art

Fandom is a community and people who read fanfic are part of that community. A lot of times, readers on tumblr will know fandom artists and their reposting rules. Always use credit if you will be using fanart as a header for your fic and always double check the artist allows this. Usually their reposting rules are stated very clearly on their instagram bios.

Additionally, you need to be aware that the art you're using is setting a first impression for your fic. For example, if you use AI art as a header, many users will decide not to reblog your fic simply because they do not support AI. The same goes for using art of whitewashed characters.

I would personally recommend creating a banner or moodboard for your fic, which will give you much more creative license to give the impression you feel is truest to your story! I use canva for all of my banners and moodboards, though you may find other apps that work better for you!

Tip #3 - Taglists

It is common curtesy to only tag people if they have requested to be on the tag list. There are some exceptions to this, where you may tag friends that you know don't mind or users who have openly encouraged their followers to add them to taglists (like me), but as a general rule of thumb, you should avoid tagging people unless they explicitly ask.

If you want to use a taglist but don't know where to start, I would recommend posting a (small) teaser or a synopsis of your fic in the appropriate tag and simply ask people to interact if they'd like to be added to the taglist.

Tip #4 - Use a Masterlist and hyperlink, hyperlink, hyperlink!

People are more likely to read your work if you make it easy for them to find. Generally, people won't spend time scrolling through your archive trying to find chapter 1 of a multi-chaptered fic you just posted. Making a masterlist that you link to each chapter will help new readers start at the beginning. And if they like your writing, a masterlist will also help them do a full binge of your works!

My friend @ofduskanddreams also recently did a poll here that suggested most users (at least in our corner of the internet) prefer to read fic on AO3. If you'll be cross posting to AO3, I definitely recommend adding a link on each chapter as well as linking your AO3 in your bio or main masterlist.

Tip #5 - Use appropiate tags and content warnings

Foremost, be respectful. While it may be tempting to use the ship tags for any background relationships that appear in the fic, I advise only tagging the ships that are central to the story. You may think using tags for background ships will give your fic a wider reach, but really you're just going to clog those tags with content that isn't really related to the ship. People, generally, don't appreciate this! Fandom is a community and our community is fairly small, so you definitely don't want to set off on the wrong foot by trying to "game" the tag system. People go into those tags because they want to see content for their ship and seeing an improperly tagged fic will certainly turn them off reading it and possibly reading anything from you in the future!

Additionally, if there is anything in your fic that might warrant a content warning (e.g. graphic violence, non-con or dub-con, blood, torture, etc.), then you will want to ensure you label this upfront. Both in the tags (with the format tw: blood or cw: blood) and stated clearly at the top of the fic (E.g. "Content warning: this fic contains graphic depictions of sexual violence). As a curtesy, all potentially triggering or NSFW content should be put beneath a read more.

Tip #6 - Fanfic Is a Community

I really can't express this enough! If you are not experiencing the engagement that you want on your fic, try engaging more with the wider community! Reblog and leave comments on other people's fics, send other people asks, reblog art and headcanons, participate in event weeks.

And lastly, because this is a community, be concious of the posts you make outside of fic. Your writing may be good, but if you make unlikeable posts about other characters, ships, etc., people may decide they don't want to support your works on principle. While it's impossible to please everyone and it's important to be true to you, it's important to understand that your blog represents your writing just as much as your writing represents your blog.
