me when I stop fucking around
Writing all of this made me think that I completely understand why some folks REALLY REALLY HATE ORIKO, which-- fair. I think that it can be kind of off-putting to watch a person do horrible things while they want to be seen as good, and I think that even more-- a self righteous person who does so much harm and has hypocritical views and then actually succeeds at the end (even with her life) can definitely be annoying.
But I also kind of like this about Oriko. I don't really want her to be different-- I think it would make her far less interesting.
Like, I think it's absolutely hilarious that all she wanted for "her world" was... a person who is absolutely obsessed with her and would kill and also die for her. Like... alright girl. That's a lot to ask for imo but you do you.
But I think it's more realistic for someone who is supposed to be manipulative to have some really dark traits. I think also that it makes a lot of sense for a manipulative person to worry a LOT about how she is perceived, and if she is a good person underneath it all. So much of her outward-facing identity is a tool she uses that changes depending on who she talks to, so wanting to be loved completely no matter what she does or how she acts makes sense.
I think it's also really important to note that Oriko is a politician's daughter whose father had a massive fall from grace. Oriko knows how fake people can be, and so being manipulative isn't a bad thing-- to her, it's what everyone else is already doing. The same people at her school that liked her before her father's crimes were put to light now hate her, and Oriko never had anything to do with that. Oriko herself didn't change. But if you view people like tools, such as the folks around her in that environment, it makes sense to dispose of a tool that could hurt you, aka network with someone important and then publicly break it off so that your own reputation doesn't get harmed.
I dunno, I'm rambling at this point. I think that Oriko has a lot of traits that can make a person sit back and go "wow uh you are not a good person like whatsoever" but then again, I think they are understandable and make her more interesting than just being the evil light magical girl. I think there is a darkness and callousness in her that is off-putting but realistic. The way she will use and dispose of people but also be haunted over it, and then be haunted over what it means for her, is just... I think that she's very human in a lot of bad ways, and I like that for her.
At the end of the day, Oriko wants to be important and I feel like that's something most people can relate to. What she does to get there is awful, and just as obsessive as Kirika in some ways-- but unlike Kirika, she questions herself every step of the way.
I dunno! I'm gonna stop rambling here.
