my favorite dril thing is when he'll just RT something from an account that hasn't posted in six years and it's clear he just came up with a stupid @ and checked to see if anyone had it
What I will always love about Over the Garden Wall, and what to me really makes it an autumn classic, is how the show presents the season as a transition. People like to say itโs a Halloween show, but itโs really an autumn show, autumn in all its faces.
Early in the show, we have autumn as the late, lingering summer. The fields are full, leaves cling to the branches. The world is painted in a greenish-gold, and it feels warm and rich and good.
And over the course of the show we lose that bit of summer. The colours bleach out. The mists come in. The harvest dances and music are done.
And by the end of the show, we get autumn as the harbinger of the coming season. Summer is long behind us. The long winter is ahead.
And I think itโs so appropriate that the show first premiered in November. When else are we more aware of how much the season has changed than when we are past smiling September and October and find ourselves with grey, patient November, watching the days get shorter and the nights grow longer.
Thinking about how I would write an adult Scooby-Doo series, because I think it can be done.
The first thing Iโd do is make the characters actually be adults.ย Still young, but adults, in the mid to late 20s range.ย Mystery Inc. is a private detective type business that they run together.ย In this universe, the supernatural/ghosts/etc are real, but not necessarily common, so when they take on a case, the culprit might be a person disguised as a monster, or it might actually be a real ghost.ย The stakes can be higher; sometimes a bad guy is legitimately trying to kill them.ย Sometimes the mystery theyโre trying to solve is a murder.ย Sometimes they actually get hurt on their cases.
Fred: the core of Fredโs character should be that heโs incredibly kind.ย Like, give a stranger the shirt off his back kind.ย The โFred canโt talk to potential clients because he might take a case for free and we need to eatโ kind.ย Heโs an honest and good person and sometimes gets himself into trouble because he assumes other people are too.ย While heโs not very good at reading people or noticing ulterior motives, heโs brilliant when it comes to mechanical or engineering type stuff, so heโs the one who keeps the mystery machine running, builds their gadgets, and of course, designs the traps.
Daphne: she comes from old money, and her parents absolutely despise her life choices, to the point where they havenโt officially disowned her, but they have basically cut her off, so she doesnโt actually have access to any family money.ย Growing up wealthy has granted her a variety of skills, including speaking multiple languages, horseback riding, and fencing.ย Sheโs very into fashion and jewelry (even if she canโt afford it anymore) and has extensive knowledge of both that can occasionally provide a vital clue in a case. And even though her parents have cut her off, Daphne still has a wide network of contacts she can ask for favors sometimes, because sheโs personable, and people tend to like her.ย Daphne is also very emotionally intelligent, and is usually the one who can spot when someone is lying to them.
Side note - I ship Fred and Daphne, so I think I would start them off as an established couple for this universe.ย Dating, engaged, married, I donโt care.ย They are stupidly in love, ride or die for each other.ย Thereโs no will they, wonโt they, no worries about cheating.ย They are in a healthy, happy, loving relationship, and no one (not even Daphneโs disapproving parents) are going to mess that up for them.
Velma: she is the forensics nerd who sometimes gets super excited about the wrong thing at the wrong time (โHe was mummified in seconds? Thatโs so cool!โ โVelma!ย His wife is standing right there!โ โOh.ย Sorry.โ).ย Sheโs not purposely insensitive, she just gets laser focused on her work and forgets to filter herself sometimes.ย Sheโs also the one who can get so fixated on solving whatever mystery theyโre working on, sheโs willing to bend or maybe break laws.ย Is breaking and entering really so bad?ย Not if it gets them answers.
Shaggy: he is still the comic relief, but heโs the comic relief by being the only person in the group that actually has common sense.ย He manages the businessโs finances, heโs the only one who knows how to cook, and the others tease him for being a coward sometimes, but Shaggy maintains that if a ghost with an axe is coming for you, running is the only sensible option.ย He should also have a range of random knowledge that sounds useless, but sometimes saves the day (ex ventriloquism, origami, the history of spoons, etc).
Scooby: as this is a universe where supernatural creatures exist, Scooby is an ancient eldritch type being that took a shine to Shaggy when he was a kid, and took the form of a talking dog to befriend and hang out with him.ย Aside from the talking dog bit and not aging, he never uses his powers in a way that anyone notices.ย The audience is not told upfront that Scooby is an ancient eldritch being; it should slowly be hinted at throughout the series so the audience put it together, but the characters never realize it.ย Scooby genuinely considers Shaggy to be his best friend, and cares about the rest of the gang too.

I just played this last week and loved it! I haven't done all the endings, but I think it's a game I'll go back to again and again. What's your favorite iteration of the Princess?
I know that Peterโs Jackson Lord of the Rings trilogy technically has flaws but alsoโฆ.it doesnโt. Itโs perfect.
do you know where "no beta we die like x" comes from and how it is used?
The term "beta" in this context is short for "beta reader" - a person who reads a fic while it's still in the editing stage and helps the writer get it ready to post. Some betas check grammar. Some check canon compliance. Some are sensitivity readers. There are lots of things that betas can do.
So functionally, saying "no beta" means that the writer didn't get this checked by a second person before they posted it. It's a warning that there might be errors or typos etc. It's mostly used when an author has written something quickly and is posting without doing a lot of (or any) edits first.
As for where it comes from? It all started with a bumper sticker.
This image was an internet meme at one point, and it got meme'd on in the form of "no ___ we ___ like men"
Here on tumblr, one of the versions that got really popular was from now-deleted user @grec1a who created this version:
From there, it migrated to AO3 as the "no beta we die like men" tag, and very often the word men is replaced by the name of a character who dies in canon.
