i think (some) straights will be like “making their relationship romantic erases its complexity!!!” as their excuse to be anti-gay ships because they genuinely view doing so as shoving all their well-written feelings and interactions into a box labeled “romantic feelings” that just explains everything and dumbs it all down to that simple category. when really, oftentimes factoring in queerness adds a level of nuance to character relationships that they will probably never understand because they haven’t experienced it.
i don’t think it necessarily makes them homophobic in every case, but i do think the cause for this is deeply rooted in bland heteronormativity. canon straight relationships are commonly written to be surface-level, are not developed well, or are very clearly included just so that a romance aspect is there. so it isn’t surprising to me that they would think “making” a relationship romantic “dumbs it down.” they’re used to boring ass writing and don’t see things that queer people see.

Tumblr isn’t social media, it’s a habit. Like smoking. We’re all gathering by the dumpster in the cold, reblogging posts.
1. Yes they have to fight, 2. Tell me who’s fighting who in the tags! (I’ll add the most ridiculous combos in a reblog)
