this fandom has a really weird thing with Gojo (and I mean, it’s with a lot of characters too but specifically Gojo right now) where he cannot be a nuanced character but instead has to be either a good person or a bad one. It’s either “he’s selfish, immature, and a bad teacher” or “he’s selfless and does everything for his students” and I’m just wondering if we all read the same story.

I’m not gonna sit here and say my opinion is better than anyone else’s because obviously there’s plenty of stuff up to interpretation, but I do think we should like.. acknowledge that he can be both? One of the best examples of this issue is how people treat the relationship between him and Megumi. Yes, Gojo is described as a “benefactor”, and yes, Megumi is technically in debt to Gojo. Yes Gojo does have long-term motives for taking care of Megumi. 

But at the same time, Gojo’s described to have treated Megumi really well as a child. He also adopted to Tsumiki, who doesn’t have any “benefit” to him, plus the deal between Toji and the Zen’in only entailed Megumi’s care. And while Gojo has stated that he needs strong, young allies, he’s also stated that it’s a crime to take away the youth from the kids. Even if he has an ulterior motive, he still wants them to be kids while they can.

Then past all of that with just his general character, he’s very human. He does both selfish and selfless things, and it’s not uncommon for him to have lapses in judgement. His morals can be wishy washy, but he cares about those close to him (and doesn’t everyone? of course you’re going to care most about those who you have connection to) and does a lot to make them happy. When Itadori was “dead”, he didn’t have to hang out with him/eat dinner with him, or wear Nobara’s skirt to make him laugh. But it was also probably a bad idea to bring him to the fight against Jogo. 

This is all to say, fandom’s breaking down of characters to make them more palatable and the idea of “the curtains are blue because the curtains are blue” has removed a lot of nuance from characters that should be treated with more thought. Like it’s just a fictional little guy, but you can also learn some stuff when you actually take the time to look

These two panels really get me, Geto referring to their friendship as something that was in the past versus Gojo still viewing Geto as his best friend. The way they view their relationship is different but there’s still care between them. It also ties into Geto being surprised that Gojo still has some form of trust in him and prompts his last words of “you should at least curse me at the very end.” It’s sad that Geto never truly understood how much Gojo cared for him until it was too late
