HIS DARK MATERIALS BOOK/SHOW SPOILERS

Still processing how much they changed in the second episode!!!! I wonder whether the reveal about Lyra’s father so early will cheapen their later moments together? And how the appearance of a window (and that window, of all of them to reveal) will change that final moment with Asriel’s bridge in the North. Also, could that mean Will makes an appearance sooner than I could have ever expected? I almost hope that juxtaposing Lyra against someone like WIll could cause her spark to shine through a little more. Overall, not a bad episode, but shocking in the divergence from the book and made me wish even more for a more feral, fearless Lyra.

I have noticed that most characters with bird dæmons on the tv show (Ma Casta, the Master, Serefina, etc...) wear some sort of leather brace on their non-dominant arm and hand. Do you think this so their dæmons can land there without the claws damaging them?
Oh, I think that’s definitely the intention for the bracer! Physically speaking, the daemons are corporeal and they can harm you, even if unintentionally. In Northern Lights (this might be a book one spoiler if you’re a show-only fan, sorry!) when Lyra is rescued from the intercision machine, Pan is in a wildcat form iirc, and he clings to her so tightly that he scratches her, but she doesn’t mind the pain. So, there is no malice in Pan hurting her, but he still hurts her.
I feel like for birds, getting wounded and scratched would be fairly common (and something that Philman didn’t seem to consider in the books, as he usually does lmao), and the show had a very nice way of approaching that issue. I feel like birds of prey daemons are the most common ones to have to use a leather bracer, because they strike me as birds who might hurt you, even accidentally; probably anything bigger than a parrot would require a bracer, or only small birds like robins and greenfinches wouldn’t require leather bracers as they don’t have such dangerous claws. I can imagine - while we haven’t seen them on the show - that other types of daemons that might hurt or wound or even make their humans dirty, might require special gear to prevent that, and it’s also possible that padded shoulders outfit - considering the fashion of Lyra’s world ranges from victorian to mid-50s, especially in the show where women dress very 30s/40s - most birds that aren’t from gyptians, usually stay on their human’s shoulders. I can’t imagine an aristocrat with a hawk daemon using a super simple leather bracer like Ma Costa’s, so it will either be a fancy one or they’d adapt the shoulders to take the daemon.
How would you describe your daemon's personality?
Doesn't need to be super detailed or anything - but of course course it also can be if you want to! - but can just be a few core words, or maybe an image or song or something that describes your dae's personality.

i love you, king zeus.
i love you, lady hestia.
i love you, lord apollo.
i love you, lady athena.
i love you, lady aphrodite.
i love you, lord poseidon.
i love you, lord hermes.
i love you, gods that i don’t actively worship.
i’ve been slacking on my devotion lately but i’ll always love the gods and they’ll always understand. they know that as long as i’m alive, i am living for them.
Dæmonism is just the advanced form of when you'd imagine an animal running alongside the car as a kid.
I’ve been really interested in His Dark Materials since the new TV show started. I was looking for more in depth research about the world building of daemons because it’s such a fascinating concept and like I discovered how daemons get their names. So when a child is born, the child’s daemon is named by their parents daemons.
So when Lyra was born and Pan started existing, that means that THIS MOTHERFUCKER
THIS THING is what gave Pantalaimon his name.
You could argue that Stelmaria might’ve contributed to the name but based on the fact that it was a highly scandalous affair, I doubt Asriel was anywhere near Lyra’s birth.
But like, the golden monkey being the one to name Pan is so fucking wild. Like he chose a name based on a Greek saint? A name that basically means all-merciful?
The monkey wanted Lyra to be merciful. He wanted her to have mercy.
