Sometimes I see people absolutely losing it over Stan bros fanart because they can’t tell if it’s platonic or a ship—and honestly? It’s because, deep down, they know it could be a ship. And yeah, it gets kinda exhausting how much people feel the need to emphasize “it’s just brotherly!!” Like… if it were that obvious, would you really need to say it?

I don't want to be (too much of) an asshole but the whole "I shouldn't have to explain this isn't Stancest" to me is so sad... And frustrating. I genuinely want to ask these people to take a walk with me and show them their own work... Show them the way the characters lounge on one another, how they sleep cuddled together and live in the same house and kiss each other on the cheek and forehead and hold each other in bed... And then ask them "Would you sleep with YOUR sibling like this?"

Genuinely. Would YOU, the artist, sleep with YOUR SIBLING like this? Look. I wish we lived in a big beautiful world where anyone can cuddle with anyone and it doesn't have to mean anything, but we don't LIVE in that world. There is such a thing as couple codding, and the way that the twins get drawn draped over each other, placing their hands on each other's pecks etc etc... This is COUPLE language. Put ANY OTHER CHARACTERS THAT ARE NOT SIBLINGS in this situation and then look me in the eye and tell me that they are not a couple. Stancest does not have to involve SEX if you do not want it to- queer platonic couples are a THING. What you are drawing are queer platonic Stancest. The worst part is there are a lot of artist who draw QPR or nonsexual stancest, who embrace the term without feeling drawn to the sexual side. And I don't want to be like "Back in my day shit was better", but back in my day there wasn't this same violent hatred there was, and people were a bit more ready to be open about liking it. If you look at old Stancest art from when the show was still airing, you'd find pieces with a LOT more attention then they'd ever get now, and I don't think it's just because of lesser audience. I think the GravFalls fandom is thriving. I just think that fandom is so much more widespread and therefore so much more policed then it used to be. Anyway. It sucks, there's no fixing this, but I'm glad the Stancest fandom has gotten a little laugh out of it. But also maybe don't harass people, all right?

the most important thing when i write dipper and mabel is to understand that they are not stan and ford.

that's not to say that there aren't similarities. obviously, the twins have dynamics that can be compared to each other in a myriad of ways, both separately and together.

but it's so very vital that dipper is NOT a 1:1 ford. and mabel is NOT a 1:1 stan.

dipper has ford's love of rationality and mysteries, but he has stan's love of stories and family. mabel has stan's pure chaos, but ford's pre-bill trust in people.

dipper and stan both approach the world with cynicism. young ford and mabel approach the world with wonder.

stan was the twin worried about being left behind, just like mabel. ford and dipper both wanted to carve a path for themselves and their future.

mabel was so scared of losing her brother that she accidentally caused weirdmaggedon, just like stan was worried about losing ford that he accidentally sabatoged ford's science project/collegiate future. but dipper was the one who fought like hell mostly by himself in the apocalypse for three days to get her back, just like stan worked for thirty years to save ford. there is nothing dipper wouldn't sacrifice for mabel.

in my humble opinion, this is why the pines family dynamic is so damn compelling. they aren't carbon copies because that's not how people work. there is a sincerity, an honesty, a relatability between all of these characters and their flaws.

mabel and dipper aren't just the younger version of their grunkles. they are a crazy mishmash of the best and worst traits swapped around and punted to the moon and back.

exploring each micro-dynamic is so fascinating. i love this weird little family.

Stanford Pines is sapiosexual and idiotsexual for Stanley Pines.

Listen, Stan is an idiot, but not because he’s stupid or poor traversed academically. It’s because he has no sense of self preservation. Hell yeah, gonna go beat the shit out of a pterodactyl at my big old age of 62 for my niece! Cataracts? Psh, eye sure don’t know ‘em! Up against a crowd of the living dead? Gotta do it for my niblings! Glasses, who needs them? (Until Stan actually really needs them to actually see anything at all and it hurts to look in the mirror, but that’s a story for another day.)

And Ford pretends that he hates how self sacrificing Stan is, but it secretly makes him all gooey inside that Stan was and is a better person than he’ll ever be. Stan’s self sacrificing ways stem from his love for his family, not from any true idiocy. It reassures Ford that Stan, no matter how much of a kleptomaniac he is, still loves with all his heart despite how everything in his life has mangled him beyond repair. Stan’s love is the one thing Stan has left for himself, and he loves fiercely. It soothes whatever inkling in Ford that doubts that Stan broke his science project on accident, despite how long ago that was.

But, another darker part of Ford adores that he has to take care of Stan when Stan fails to, because Stan needs him to, because Stan can’t take care of himself without Ford, because Stan needs Ford to keep him in check, and because Stan needs him. Ford relishes in this satisfaction of knowing that Stan loves him to the point of self-destruction—which subsequently makes Ford go down a spiral of oh my god I’m just like Bill how could I do this to my own flesh and blood? I am sinful beyond redemption.

Stan appeals to Ford’s sapiosexual side because he taught himself quantum physics while running a business, and successfully convinced the government that he was dead. And I don’t think anyone else mentions this, but he also successfully convinced all his enemies he was dead. For 30 years. With how many enemies Stanley Pines had? That is an impressive feat even Ford recognizes. Rico? Oh yeah, Stanley Pines died in a car accident. Really sucks, cause I was gonna extort him for money and peel his skin off with the back of a rusty fork.

And Ford fucking preens in this fact. He can make advanced quantum physics jokes and Stan will understand. Stan might not laugh, but he’ll understand and Ford will pull a chuckle out of Stan that just makes his insides go all gooey all the same. He’s not alone in his academic interests anymore. Stan understands. He always did, but now he understands understands. Stanley was never just the twin with brawn, but now he’s the brawn and the brain in the most tempting ways for Ford. His strength was always attractive to Ford, but his brain? Absolutely a temptress.

It feeds into how Ford, after all this time apart, wants Stan and Ford’s life to consume one another in the ways it never could in these past 30+ years. Ford desperately craves the codependency they had in their childhood, the suffocation. The saying “You don’t know what you have until it’s gone” is very much applicable to Ford’s longing. Stan’s self sacrificial ways and the academic fruits of his resilience satisfy Ford’s cravings.

Now, if only Ford could admit these feelings.

I haven't seen GF in years but was abruptly reminded a while ago and found your blog and your Pinecest+Stancest posts while looking at the Pinecest tag so I gotta share this plot that's now trapped in my brain. If I got the details about canon wrong, blame the passage of time, not me lol.

Ok I'm sure I'm not the only one who came up with that but: Mutually Unrequited/Pining Stans that both never acted on their feelings and spent the entire separation depressed about it and blaming the way they were hiding their feelings partially for how things went down. Enter Pinecest, only just clocking that this is Not Normal Sibling Feelings.

Stan encourages it when he first realizes it because he never got to even try, but maybe Mabel and Dipper can be happy. So he bullies any boys Mabel brings home, shuts down Dipper's flirt attempts with Wendy & Pacifica - Dipper catches on to his feelings first and wants to prove to himself that he's NORMAL OKAY??? he is, in fact, super not normal, but he'll scream that he is at the top of his lungs - and then Ford returns.

Ford also immediately catches on to Dipper's crush. Because he gets Dipper, and of course, he'd love his twin. He can't see Mabel's feelings as easily because he's insta-transferencing her and Stanley and the idea of her liking Dipper back is unfathomable (read: heartbreaking) because then it means perhaps Stanley could've loved him too.

But he cares about Dipper, so Ford thinks the best he can do is maybe help cut off those feelings at the knees before there's no going back for him, at least Dipper might not totally lose Mabel the way he and Stan thought they had lost each other, might eventually lead a normal non-recluse full of regrets life unlike them. So Ford offers to let Dipper stay without letting on his real reason to do so, and Mabel FLIPS OUT.

The thoughts have been building in the back of her head for a while, and she's suddenly confronted with what she never thought possible. Losing Dipper. And it hurts so so much and then Weirdmageddon comes and things go completely off the rails and now she knows she loves him but he's her brother, the world is ending and maybe he doesn't actually like her at all.

It ends with Dipper admitting to Mabel why he was even contemplating separation and Ford is trying to stop him while Stan has been working for this for months, damnit, and Ford's attempts at shutting the confession down just kill him. Dipper says it anyway, and Mabel thinks she's dreaming, but yeah, dummy, I love you too. How could you even think otherwise?

And seeing their dramatic first kiss totally guts Ford. He's happy for them, clearly, but he wants this oh so much and he can't have it. Stanley is shocked at how much Ford's affected by this development and things just blow up from there, and before either of them know it they're kissing.

Meanwhile Mabel and Dipper finally remember where they are and who they're with and fuck this is going to be difficult to explain - wait wtf GRUNKLES WHAT ARE YOU DOING. Well nothing they weren't right before that.

The rest of summer is an insanely awkward transition period where both couples are trying to work out how to deal with this new dynamic and what it means for their lives, especially for when Dipper and Mabel go back home. But everyone is insanely happy and when Dipper and Mabel come back to GF it's together, to a married couple of Grunkles (in everything except the eyes of the law).

And perhaps someday a - but lbr it'll be two - Pinecest Baby crawls around the Mystery Shack to everyone's delight...

I’ve been craving some distraction from the overwhelming amount of work I have on the last week of 2024 and Clover posted the first chapter of teen!stancest (How Can I) Say No To This so, obviously I had to drop everything and make this silly little picture.

I think it's the asexual in me that is allergic to "aesthetic" ships. Some people will ship stuff because the characters look good next to each other or they're both hot and that grosses me out, which is weird because, yah know... I ship Stancest, lol. Compared to 1nc3st, being attracted to a ship because the characters are hot seems kind of strange. I think the difference is that Stancest to me isn't shipped at all BECAUSE they're hot. I find them hot because it's THEM. They're two grouchy old men that have been through so, SO much, apart and together, and have decided to allow themselves to love one another in their old age. They're hot because they're the two most emotionally compelling characters in the show, with depths that keep going the more you analyze and learn about them. They're hot because they're heartbreaking and their story is beautiful. If I want to take these incredibly compelling wonderful characters and draw them wearing tight ass shorts or making out sloppy style then idk man it just hits different.
