For three months you and Jenna have kept your relationship secret. Your family, her family, the public – no one knew the depth of the time spent. They only suspected you both were seeing someone at one point of the other.
All was going well until this evening.
Jenna’s family planned a family meal together, now that they all caught a break and Jenna was finally home, but this was the last night you would have with her before you had to spend the next two weeks miles away at a family reunion of your own. You didn’t want to go, but your parents were pushing every excuse in the book for you to ‘make an effort’ to spend time with your relatives you haven’t seen in years. What else could you do?
“I’m gonna miss you…” Jenna whispered, running her fingers through your hair as she embraced the soft kisses you pressed to her jawline.
You sighed and wrapped her in a loving hug, “I’m gonna miss you too… I can’t believe my parents are being so persistent. I don’t even remember half of those people.”
Jenna couldn’t help but laugh out loud, “That’s the point of a family reunion, Y/N! You get to catch up and know people again.”
“Yeah, but…” Just seeing her smile and hearing her giggle made your heart ache. You didn’t want to leave her. “I just want you…”
Jenna rested her head on your shoulder and nuzzled your hair, tightening her grip slightly to reassure you. “You have me tonight…”
“Until your family needs you.” There was a sour tang of jealousy in your voice that had your girlfriend pulling away and her hand catching your chin to lock eyes.
But Jenna didn’t say anything and just pressed her lips onto yours, pushing away from the wall to send you backwards onto the bed. She crawled over you, keeping your mouths together as both of your soft moans created a soothing harmony. When the connection broke, you smiled up into her beautiful brown gaze and whispered, “Guess I shouldn’t have said that?”
“Depends,” she teased, “Did you like the response?”
“Yeah.”
“There’s your answer.”
You laughed and pulled her close, practically forcing her to lay on your chest as you stole her lips again. You let your hands run down her back to hold the curves of her sides, while she slipped her own hands beneath you – one cradling the back of your neck and the other resting beneath your shoulder blade.
All worries and disappointments were lost in a sea of contentment as the warmth the two of you shared filled the room with a passion so strong, it was present on both of your lips. But the moment didn’t last for long as clattering from downstairs interrupted the gentle breaths shared.
“Jenna,” you broke the kiss with a thumping heart, “W-What if we’re caught? What if your parents walk in right now?”
Jenna paused with her infamous thinking expression before returning with a shrug and a small chuckle, “I do-hon’t know!”
You snickered back, battering your eyelashes up at her, “I trust you know what you’re doing?”
“If we get caught, at least you’re leaving for the next two weeks so you’re safe.”
“But what about you?”
She cocked her head, but before she could respond, you decided to kiss her over and over again, covering her lips, cheeks, nose, forehead – any spot that was left open and reachable to your love. And with this, you were blessed with adorable giggles and a few pecks of your own.
“Now, no matter what happens, you’re covered for a while.” You said with playful confidence that had your girlfriend groaning.
“Oh God, Y/N,” Jenna cringed with shut eyes and a twisted grin, shaking her head to rid herself of the embarrassment she had for you, “Don’t ever say that again. That’s so cringe.”
“But it’s true!” You squeezed her hips as you shrugged innocently.
“Shut the fuck up!” Jenna laughed, giving you a weak slap. “It’s fine! We’re not gonna get caught. I hear everyone that comes down the hall. I can even identify who is who just by their footsteps.”
“Oh yeah?” You twirled a strand of her hair with your finger before giving it a soft tug. “What about mine?”
She snicked with a scrunched nose that was too adorable for you to handle, forcing you to koala-bear her from below, “Huh?”
“Of course, I know yours, Y/N!” Jenna smiled and laid happily atop of you while taking in the fresh scent of shampoo on your silky hair. She whispered, “They’re my favorite…”
You hummed in response, turning to kiss her, and she met you halfway. There, you both became hypnotized by this blessing of time that was spared. It was a trick to get here, climbing the fence to reach the second story, sneaking through Jenna’s window, having to keep quiet when shuffling was nearby or when Jenna had to leave, and attempting to make the most of what you had. But it was working. All until…
“Hey, Jenna, what do you want to drink?”
Markus pushed his way through the door – no knock, no preparation, no nothing – he just entered without a care and was caught in the awkward scenario you read in stories or see in movies.
“Shit!” Jenna hissed, leaping off of you to sit awkwardly on her bed, while you shot up and stared wide-eyed between your girlfriend and her intrusive brother.
“Uhhh…” Markus stammered, shifting his weight uncomfortably as his cheeks burned a bright red. “Uh-umm…”
“Water, Markus.” Jenna was quick to answer, her tongue sharp and steady with an edge that had her brother giving a quick nod and fleeing out of the room.
Once the door shut, you and Jenna exchanged embarrassed smirks before the busted girl fell back onto her bed with her hands covering her face. “Fuck…”
You giggled, propping yourself up on you elbow to lay next to her. “What was that you said about not getting caught? That you can hear everyone that comes down the hall?”
Instead of the verbal response you were expecting, you received a bitch slap to the face by none other than Jenna’s pillow.
Markus had blabbed. The rest of the family knew. And now you and Jenna were seated next to each other at the dining room table. Everyone but Aliyah were skeptical, sitting quietly as they picked through their food and subtly glanced over at you and Jenna ever so often.
“Guess I’ll make some conversation,” Aliyah started, pointing her fork at you, “Where are you from, Y/N?”
“A little bit of everywhere really,” you shrugged, swirling your straw in the ice water you were given. “At least that’s what I tell people.”
“Oh, so you travel a lot?”
“Um, I-I wouldn’t say travel, but my family comes from many, so I like to keep things simple and just embrace my diverse heritage.”
“Ayy, I like it!” Aliyah applauded, soloing out her sister next, “You’ve picked a good one, sis.”
Jenna gave her a passive smile before her dark eyes rested on Markus, who was quick to meet her. She just shook her head, a glare so sharp it embodied her star role as Wednesday Addams. It worked, causing him gulp down his mouthful and look away in hopes of deflect.
“So, Y/N,” Natalie’s voice sounded across from Jenna, and although it carried nicely, there was still some weariness laced within her words. “How did you meet Jenna?”
“Well,” you reached for your girlfriend’s hand beneath the table, needing some encouragement for the amount of pressure you were under. Luckily, she understood and took your hand with a supportive squeeze. “It was kinda on accident… It was late after a shoot, from what I now know was Wednesday, and I was walking to my hotel. That’s when I saw Jenna. She looked absolutely exhausted… I went to ask if she needed a ride home, but she said no. And me, being the nice person I am–“
“More like stalker,” was Jenna’s teasing remark, which had the two of you and Aliyah giggling.
You shook your head, regaining your composure to finish the story, “Being the nice stalker I am, I decided to follow her back to her apartment just to make sure she got there safely. She noticed this of course and got defensive, thinking I was planning on doing something to her, but I was honest and told her that because she looked tired and upset, I wanted to make sure nothing happened to her.”
You paused to get Natalie’s approval before feeling your confidence grow, which allowed you to continue on. “Every day after that, I followed her home, though she didn’t know it until I approached her again and asked if I could walk with her one night. We talked and talked… And that’s when I fell in love. A simple story, but my favorite by far.”
You concluded with an awkward chuckle before Natalie spoke up.
“That’s how it went, Jenna?” She fixated on her daughter, who gave her a smile and nodded.
“Yeah, Mom. It was literally that simple.” She turned to her father, who sat at the head of the table, “Dad, remember when I stopped calling you every night? And when I did call you, I wasn’t crying?”
“Yes, I remember.” Edward nodded, staring you down like you were a threat to the entire household
“Well, you have Y/N to thank for that. She’s the one who made those long days of filming and longer nights of fencing or cello lessons worth it… I had her,” Jenna passed you a heartwarming glance and joked, “And she was like my own personal Enid that I could take home with me.”
This actually had the whole table cracking up, but there was still the odd tension of secrets and mistrust that lingered, which had your stomach churning in knots. What if this was it? What if Jenna’s parents forbid her from seeing you again? What if they just can’t trust you even though you make their daughter happy? Kept her safe on the dark, freezing sidewalks of Romania? What if the next two weeks of not seeing Jenna turn into a lifetime?
“I think y’all make a cute couple!” Aliyah crowed, taking a sip of her drink as she looked around the rest of the family. “Y’all’s thoughts?”
“I’m still trying to process what I saw earlier,” was Markus’s reply, which had Jenna and Aliyah both rolling their eyes at the same time.
Issac just gave an awkward shrug before being caught in a side conversation with his brother.
Mia and Mariah exchanged eye contact before the younger spoke up, “I mean, if Y/N makes Jenna happy, I’m cool with it.”
And then came the other’s reply, “Yeah, as long as you’re happy, Jen. We support you.”
But once the question was passed down to the parents, Edward didn’t say anything, just continued to eat the rest of his dinner. But Natalie sat back and observed all the little things she picked up on between you and her daughter. And she smiled.
There were no words like her husband, but Jenna could tell by the way her mother was staring, that you both were going to be alright. It would take time for the majority of the family to warm up to you, but you weren’t being kicked out yet. You still had a chance, and from what she could tell, a big one at that.
You then caught Natalie’s gaze and returned the warm smile you were given before dipping your head in a thankful nod.
Maybe the next two weeks would be the start of something new, something honest, something more…
Maybe you wouldn’t have to climb the side of the house, risking broken limbs and spine injuries, just to crawl through Jenna’s bedroom window so you wouldn’t be caught two weeks from now.
Maybe you could just walk through the front door two weeks from now.
Maybe you would be able to walk right back into Jenna’s arms two weeks from now.
Yeah, you definitely would.
