Yes. He's just renting this mortal body while he's on his eldritch horror vacation. It just so happens that his rental came with unexpected character development and murderous intent

His face is inscrutable, incomprehensible, his unmoving gaze locked with John’s."

Please check out the fic! It is a beautiful and viscerally written study of John's psyche after accidentally taken over Arthur's entire body, leaving nothing of him behind after stumbling into a ritual site.... So it is up to John alone to get Arthur back!
