Merry Christmas!

And soon a year comes to an end...

We've been working on Magical Harvest for a year now, and we're further along than expected and not as far along as originally planned (which is good though - more on that later). Personal Besides working on the game, a bit has happened in our lives as well.A little review about this year, what happened in our personal life:

- Since spring, Marie has been working on Magical Harvest only in her spare time because of her main job (we have to live from something). And for that she helps me immensely!

- we attended the next Swedish course (12h per week) from February to June and I attended again from September to November, but unfortunately it took too much time for too little progress (the pace of the lessons was too slow)

- in summer we got engaged and will get married next July <3

- we had planned trips to Germany to visit our families, but had to postpone because of Corona

- Vet! Thanks to our cat, we have been there often because he has a food allergy. That cost time and nerves.... Magical Harvest In general we have worked a lot on Magical Harvest (I partly 70-80 hours per week), but of course many things came in between. Nevertheless we are satisfied with our progress.

The demo, which we focused on between June and November, has brought us a good deal further, but also cost us a lot of time. Based on the knowledge gained, we have been able to develop, among other things, a style for the game world that can run without problems on SteamDeck, for example, and we are even more confident than before that the direction of Magical Harvest is the right one.

Programming-wise, I have implemented all the core features of the farm, the animals are currently still being worked on, but will be finished this year (programming-wise), except for the mini-game to crossbreed animals.

Also, the logic for translations is already implemented and some other points that were implemented thanks to the demo and otherwise would have found their way into the game later (which would have been a lot more work).  New character-artist: Lura

With such a big project you are not always confident, especially with such a small team. I, in particular, often vacillate between "there's still way too much to be done" and "oh, soon all the features will be programmed - then the progress will be more visible!".

And then there are moments like in November, when we were contacted by our new character illustrator Lura, asking her to draw our Bachelors/ettes. Because of her motivational skills and abilities we accepted her into our team (and especially because of her skills of course!) and fitting for Christmas she finished with the bachelorette "Thalana", a Nereid (sea woman) who is afraid of water .

Lura adapted her style according to our wishes and showed real talent! We are very happy to welcome her to our little team!

Marie is currently working on the design of the city, which is divided into 3 different districts with their own architectural style. This is also motivating as the world is slowly being given more and more life. Each district belongs to one of the game's factions. The player can also apply the building style to his own house later on.

Financial Unfortunately, we still have basically no financial support, but we will try to launch a Kickstarter campaign in 2023. Possibly not until 2024. Something like this takes a lot of time of preparation and also nerves and until then we definitely need to be able to show something more. Indie-game-marketing is of course also a difficult point. As long as too few people know about our project, such a campaign doesn't make sense either and to be honest, we are not the most talented social media users. But we will try to make this a bit more active and interesting in 2023 (including the things we show).

Outlook We definitely want to be "feature-complete" by mid 2023! At least with the base logic of the game. That means that "only" the base logic of the NPCs has to be programmed, the character-creator and the minigames. Of course, that's not all, but those are the bigger parts.

Besides programming, I'm also creating assets for the game at the same time, so I'm not spending 100% of my time on programming. In the end, we try to get as far as possible!

Feedback culture is dead, long live feedback culture!

AO3, fanfiction, and comments: the system isn’t working. 

Fic authors have a problem with feedback – or rather, with the lack of it. Fanfiction has a notoriously low ratio of comments to hits, and many of us have expressed our frustration that we can get a hundred, two hundred, five hundred, even a thousand views on our stories, but only a handful of readers will leave kudos, let alone comments.   

Unfortunately, this only gets worse for long, multi-chapter stories (aka, the longfics we know, love, and would sell our souls in a second if it meant an update), which also happen to be the stories that authors need the most support to continue and complete. Law of diminishing returns, y’all, and it sucks. 

We’re not here to guilt you into leaving comments. We want to address the problem by changing the format, and we need your help to do it. 

The goal is to increase the amount of feedback authors get from readers, especially on stories with multiple chapters, and to make it easier for everyone to show how much we love fics. We’re opening a discussion with ao3 to figure out how/if any of these options can be implemented, but first we need options to present! 

Some of our current ideas: 

Ability to leave a form of kudos on every chapter, instead of only once on the entire story: this lets authors know that you’re here and you’re reading their updates, so their hard work isn’t getting tossed into the internet void. 

Comment templates: suggested comments that can be customized or posted as-is. Many of us draw a blank or get nervous when we try to think of a comment, so having pre-made options will both increase the total level of feedback and serve as practice, making it easier to leave more in-depth comments in the future. 

Upvoting/leaving kudos on comments themselves: positive reinforcement makes giving feedback more fun and rewarding, and it lets the author know that readers are present and agreeing with other comments, even if they don’t leave one themselves. 

We’ll contact AO3 to discuss the possibility of adding any of these as native features, and if that won’t work, we’re looking into creating and sharing a user script. 

 What you can do to help: 

 As a reader, what would you like to have? What would you be most likely to use? New ideas, opinions on ideas that are listed here, they’re all good. 

As a creator, how would you feel about each of these options? Can you think of other ways of receiving or encouraging feedback?

Lura (our character-illustrator) finished Valariel - a Bachelor of the Drakys-species.

Valariel is my personal favorite of the 10 base-Bachelors/Bachelorettes, because I created him around 7-9 years back. I'm inventing stories with my soon-to-be-wife and Valariel is one of the characters of our stories.

Originally, he is an assassin who uses the magical element "shadow" to stay unseen and to travel fast. His master raised him to be a weapon without feelings. That's why its hard to get some other facial expressions from him beside of his normal expression.

In Magical Harvest, he's of course (officially) not an assassin, because we don't have killing in our game, but what's in your imagination - that's onto you.

His description: Valariel lives outside the city in the dark forest and avoids being seen by others. The brother of Neria is strongly connected to the darkness, so it is no surprise that he belongs to the Obsideran Pact. Since he reveals little of himself, he is difficult to judge. However, he is described as cool, distant and, above all, dangerous.

He is a Drakys who is convinced that his kind descended from the black dragons. Therefore, he can be found in many different places searching for information on this subject.

Although he prefers to keep to himself, he also seems to be around Azriel quite often. Is there a connection between them?

A Gift

„What is this?“ Wrathion smiled and sat down. He looked at Anduin with amusement. „Oh my dear king... You know what this is.“ „Yeah... I mean. It's an egg. A white egg? A dragon egg I guess?“ Wrathion nodded and laid his hand on the egg. „I have to tell you something. This egg is older than Stormwind. It belongs to the father of dragons and his mate.“ „You stole this egg?!“ „No! It was… a gift from his mate. Her name... is Sura. She is an aspect like my father was. Her role was to have an eye of thousands eggs from the five dragonflights. These eggs are... so old. They're not related to any of their kind. Sura waited and protect them with her own nest. But none dragon hatched in all these years. But now she knew their time has come. She called us. She called the leader of the five dragon flight. She gave the four the power of the aspects back and for all of us hope. Many eggs hatched as they could felt the presence of their kind. My flight... I'm not the only one more.“ He smiled. Anduin was still only listening. „Then I spoke with her, and she show me her own eggs who turned into stone in those many years. We talk about our... mates. And when I told her that I never want to lose you… Well this egg began to shaking. It was alive. Sura was surprise. She talked to the egg but there was no reaction. As I talked about us again the egg react again. So... this egg is a gift Anduin. A gift from the hope itself. Sura is a dragon of wlight, and she gave the dragons hope. She... gave us hope for… a bigger family I guess?“ Anduin blinked. Wrathion waited for another reaction, but there was no chance for the young lion. The whelp inside the egg was crying and then began to hatch. He fought against the shell. After a few seconds, where there both looked surprised, a white golden whelp hatched. Tired but proud of himself, it crawled out of his egg and looked at them. Then he gave a happy loud and lay down. It was Anduin who touched him first. „You... had waited so long... for us?“ The whelp purred by the touch. Wrahtion smilded again, petting the little dragon whelp. „It seemed so. He's cute, isn't he?“ Anduin nodded. As they took back their hands the dragon changed his form. It was a human baby. Wrathion remembered that this wasn't something a dragon could do after hatching a few minutes ago. He trained four months for his human form and this little whelp manage to do this after a few minutes?! „Is that normal?“, asked Anduin and hugged the baby. Wrathion shook his head. „Well... No. But Sura said something... Look at him Anduin... He looks like you a little.“ Anduin looked down at the baby who opened his again. There was red. Like Wrathion's but a little different... more human. „When we shape shifting we... well we can choose which race but not the look. Let me try something.“ Anduin looked a little confused as he recognized his magic spell. It was to detect the family bonds between persons. „Wrathion?“ Red lines appeared from the baby. One was connected to Anduin, one to Wrathion, both were red. This color stand for parents. Parents in blood. „He is... is our son.“ Anduin was shocked but Wrahtion could hear the sound of happines in Anduin's voice. „Yes. We have a child Anduin.“ This little whelp didn't hatch for the father of dragons or the dragon of light. No, he only hatched for them. He wanted to be with them. It was a gift. „How shall we name him?“, asked Anduin. Well, that was a good question.

Later after many names Anduin came with ‘Silrion Medivh’ short Sil. Silrion to honor the black dragonflight. They both decided to hide him for the alliance and Sil ist most of the time by Wrathion and the other balck whelps. Ah and Wrathion told Anduin that he is now the Aspect of the earth. Ebyssian is  the one who watched the whelps while Wrathion tried to help Azeroth. After two or three years another gift arrive. This time it’s alittle girl and Wrathion came up with the name Varia. She has darker skin as her brother and black curly hair like Wrathion but the blu eyes from Anduin. Well... maybe a draw a scetch or so...
