Getting Started: The Seven Laws of Magic

Magic is an inherently mysterious thing but there is a strange logic to its nature. Describing said nature is a difficult thing. How does one describe something that can never truly be known?

The answer for most of history? poorly. Practitioners of the arcane arts are not known for straightforward explanations. I will do my best to explain the basic mechanics:

The Law of Contagion: Once together, always together. The part of the thing is the whole of the thing. By performing magic on a strand of your hair, one can effect your entire body. The more intimate the connection, the more powerful the effect. A cigarette butt you smoked will have almost no effect, but a phial of your blood will be extremely effective. Magic using this law is known as Thaumaturgy.

The Law of Sympathy: Like attracts like. The image is the thing. A drawing or representation of something can gain its properties. A photo or drawing of you will have a similar thaumaturgical connection to you. Combining sympathy and contagion is the basis for poppet magic.

The Law of Correspondence: As Above, So Below. The gods are like us and we are like them. When viewed closely, atoms resemble solar systems. The big effects the small. The idea that there is a sort of harmony between similar patterns no matter their size. This is the basis behind astrological magic.

The Law of Resistance: Some things are more magically conductive than other things. Everything exists on a spectrum of “magical“ to “mundane“ and the less magic something is, the harder it is to effect with magic. The same extends to people who, for whatever the reason, simply have a harder time being interacting with magic. 

The Law of Balance: Magic seeks equilibrium, and therefore, every magical action has a cost. No magical act takes place without some sort of power behind it. Energy will not move unless something is moving it, be it a practitioner or the natural energy of the moon. A body in motion will stay in motion, a body at rest will stay at rest unless acted upon by an outside force.

The Law of Reciprocity: If you don’t know where its pointed, its pointed at you. If it doesn’t have enough energy, it will get get energy from you. The process of getting hit with your own improperly constructed spell is known as Recoil. Safe practice often involves setting up wards to act as a barrier between you and any mistakes.

The Law of Reversal: That which is done by magic can be undone by magic. For every spell there is a counterspell, for every ritual a counterritual. Every ward can be hexed, every curse can be dispelled. This does not mean countermeasure will be easy or efficient.

TAROT TRICKS: How to Avoid Blanking When Reading

To truly master tarot, you have to put in the time to learn the cards’ traditional and evolved meanings. You cannot rely on your intuition alone. That would be cheating. But, when you are a total beginner, your intuition could somehow be your tutor.

1) Use common sense.

Read the room, so to speak. Observe the mood of the card or the spread. Look at the facial expressions. The colors. The setting. The atmosphere.

This way, if the question is, “Does he love me?” and you get the Nine of Swords, you do not have to remember that card’s meanings.

You only have to look at the card and see that the figure in it is stressed, not happy. The color of it is black – a shade of negativity. The background has a bunch of swords hanging on someone’s head, like a threat.

Does this card look like someone who is in love? Not at all. You have your answer.

2) Refer to the name.

The Major Arcana is a cheat sheet in itself. The cards’ names contain their meanings.

What is a magician? Someone who can do magic. Therefore, in most cases, The Magician means having magic in your life, such as a wish come true or a last-minute miracle. Anything wonderful.

Who is the devil? Someone bad and evil. Therefore, The Devil is usually someone who has sinister plans. You are being warned against a toxic person, a dangerous situation, or self-sabotage.

When it comes to the Minor Arcana, all you have to do is remember what each suit means. Wands are passion. Cups are emotions. Swords are thoughts. Pentacles are foundations. When looking at a card, replace the suit names with the above. Suddenly, the Ten of Pentacles becomes the Ten of Foundations. That is, someone incredibly stable.

3) Form a sentence.

Remember this basic sentence structure: Subject-verb-object. Jason drank juice. Andy bought books. Stefan punishes bullies. Read spreads as such. Below is a nine-card spread read from top to bottom.

Queen of Pentacles + The Star + Two of Cups. “A woman (subject) wishes (verb) for love (object).”

The Empress + Six of Cups + The Lovers. “She (subject) will receive (verb) it (object).”

Knight of Wands + Six of Pentacles + Ace of Cups. “A Fire sign (subject) will give (verb) it (object).”

This way, you do not need to spend ages on interpreting one card. Instead, you are allowing them to interact and give you one coherent message.

4) Turn to basic math.

If you do not know anything yet about tarot numerology, remember your lessons in kindergarten. The bigger the number, the better. Would you rather have five chocolate bars or ten?

It is the same with tarot. Bigger often means better. The Nine of Cups is the card of satisfaction. But satisfaction fades. The Ten of Cups is the card of fulfilment. Something full takes longer to be drained.

When it comes to negative cards, the same is still true, except “better” becomes “worse”. The Nine of Swords is ridden with anxiety. But the Ten of Swords is reeking of death. Anxiety can get better, but death is final.

This even applies to the Major Arcana. But for that to make sense, you will need a deeper understanding of The Fool’s Journey – how the cards, even the negative ones, progress in wisdom and maturity.

5) Zero in on a detail.

When you are feeling overwhelmed by the amount of cards and their meanings, focus on just one detail to get rid of your confusion.

If the question is, “How will my finances be for 2022?” and you pull the Queen of Wands, focus on the throne, for example.

Do poor people sit on thrones? No. Only royals do. Royals are rich. They own jewels, land and castles. Therefore, the querent’s finances in 2022 are looking positive.

Direct your thoughts towards one object within a card, and start speaking about what that object generally represents. Simply voice out your thoughts, and you will arrive at the message.

ミ★ Represents someone who is enlightened or has divine knowledge/wisdom, such as a guru or literal priestess— being put on a “pedestal”

ミ★ Recognition in investigative, psychological based careers

Empress

ミ★ Fame for one’s beauty or a career relating to arts, fashion, lifestyle and/or DIY

ミ★ Recognition for one’s nurturing, empathetic, and/or “motherly, feminine” character

Emperor

ミ★ Having leadership skills, authority and power in careers relating to the government/politics, and corporate companies (ie. A CEO)

ミ★ Recognition in male-dominated fields of work or characteristics of courage, strength, and passion

Hierophant

ミ★ Having authority and power in a church/religious organizations, schools and/or institutions

ミ★ Famed for one’s strong beliefs, wisdom, stable foundations, traditionality, and responsible character

The Chariot

ミ★ Having command, willpower, strength, victory and power over others

ミ★ Represents someone who may do whatever it takes to gain a higher position despite stepping over others

ミ★ Success in sports competitions, tournaments or battles

ミ★ Recognition may be found quickly once one gains control and self-discipline over their dreams— staying focused on one’s path

Strength

ミ★ Governed by Leo, this represents public careers and recognition

ミ★ May refer to fame through working with animals, a pet, and/or caring for others

ミ★ Represents someone with a nurturing and gentle nature

Wheel of Fortune

ミ★ Sudden, life-changing fame that is granted from the stars! Check your transits to see if there’s a conjunction to your Midheaven, Vertex, Part of Fortune or Jupiter when you pull this card!

ミ★ Recognition in careers such as public speaking, business/start-ups, pop-up shops or restaurants, and finances

ミ★ In some occasions, this card can refer to someone who is a bartender… So there may be fame surrounding this career path

The Devil

ミ★ Fame or recognition in illicit/taboo career paths, such as sex work or inside trading

ミ★ May refer to careers that are high risk, high reward or involves manipulation (ie. Gambling, business)

ミ★ Connections to famous celebrities or people of power, materiality, and/or addictions

The Star or Sun

ミ★ Celebrity status fame— represents a beauty that puts people in awe and being in the spotlight

ミ★ Refers to public careers, leadership, arts, music, film, entertainment, and/or social media influencing

The World

ミ★ Represents someone who is world-wide famous, viral or a master at their craft

ミ★ Overseas fame or for international affairs, travelling, vlogging, and/or careers relating to being a news anchor or journalist

ミ★ Blessings relating to fame are received once one manages to overcome all their obstacles and learn harsh lessons

Aces and Pages (Wands, Swords, Pentacles, Cups)

ミ★ The beginning of fame or recognition

ミ★ Being scouted by an agent or receiving new opportunities— wands refers to passion projects, swords are intellectual and innovative pursuits, pentacles are about business and can lead to long-lasting ventures, while cups are a reference to creative endeavours

4 of Wands

ミ★ Fame in one’s homeland or through generational wealth and inheritance— being an heir to a familial business/empire

ミ★ May represent someone who gains recognition in careers such as wedding photography, event planning, interior design, and making other’s lives more fruitful

ミ★ May refer to someone who discovers a cure or truth about a previously hidden and confusing situation (ie. Finding the cause of a disease, etc)

9 of Cups

ミ★ Fame from one’s manifestations— wishes coming into fruition, recognition, acclaim, triumph and rewards coming in soon

10 of Cups or 10 of Pentacles

ミ★ Having fame within a collective, by association or through being in the public eye

ミ★ May also refer to success from a family business or passive income

ミ★ Represents someone who has charisma, all around abundance, and respect from many supportive people

3 of Pentacles

ミ★ Having support and popularity at work, local community, school, church or institution

ミ★ May represent fame in careers that require communication, networking or building foundations (ie. Designer, architect, construction manager, etc)

9 of Pentacles

ミ★ Recognition for one’s talents turned creative business— arts, crafts, self-care essentials and/or luxury brand items

ミ★ Fame and financial abundance is found once one focuses on themselves and their own ambitions without distraction
