asagiri heard "hurt people hurt people" and took it both as a guide for writing beautiful complex tragic characters and also a command to inflict maximum pain onto readers

literally though the fundamental misunderstanding that characterizing chuuya as someone who is too extroverted, or cant help getting attached, is. because he could actually! very easily!!! he already has trust issues! & it’s such a huge thing that for him, the fact that he has not yet become verlaine or become dazai is a choice, an effort, often at the expense of himself

Actually, while having a retrospective on Egghead, I realized there isn't enough Sentomaru appreciation.

The entire arc he spends sacrificing himself for the safety of others. And boy does he sacrifice. Zero shits given about his "faith" to the Marines and the WG. No hesitation in betraying them if it means helping his father figure and the innocent civilians of the island. Goes against a BUSTER CALL and is willing to stay behind if it means others get to escape. Does everything he can to save innocent lives to the point of going against his mentor figure. And all of his efforts go to waste due to the sheer tragedy of the situation, as he has to watch the escapee ships get shot down. He instantly sides with the Strawhats even if it means he'll be declared a criminal. Quits the corrupt system of the Marines and in return he looses everything. And yet he tries to keep going even in his mourning and manages to survive. Genuinely the unsung hero of the arc.

I give Stella a lot of criticism about a lot of things, as much as I love him as a character, but "leaving his son behind to potentially die on a Buster Call'd island while he attempts to escape with some pirates" is one I often forget. Justice for 'maru.

A Self Indulgent Koala Redesign :)

A self indulgent Koala redesign :)

Going for something cute that has the ability to look normal among mid to upper class civilians in case she needs to mingle with nobles, but just a bit more militaristic and practical for fighting! Thinking of doing a layer by layer breakdown for her outfit as well

Concept:

The dynamic of Ranpo and Yosano as kids is really interesting to me.

You have Ranpo who thought he had an ability and it saved him. He flaunts it to the public and takes great pride in displaying it.

He’s smarter than anyone else and he made that a strength of his instead of something to fear.

And then you have Yosano who has an ability and it hurt her. Her ability was abused and she was locked away when she tried to run.

She knows she can do so much good and that terrifies her.

I personally don’t think that Ranpo understood the weight of having an ability until they met.

Yes he was kidnapped for it and I’m sure Fukuzwa told him tales and the importance of this gifted business permit.

But I like to think meeting Yosano reminded Ranpo that he’s not untouchable.

That even now he’s still human.

I like to think they saw pieces of themselves in each other. Parts of them that they had long since lost.

Ranpo saw in Yosano the fear of one in a world full of monsters. Yosano saw in Ranpo her earlier confidence, when her ability was a point of pride.

That Ranpo tries to return to her with that butterfly pin he found in the wreckage.

Because you are human.

Because you are extradionary not because of your gift but because you are kind.

You wanted to help them.

And now I’m going to help you.

The implication of Vegapunk's mentioning of history getting rid of the rare races

The Implication Of Vegapunk's Mentioning Of History Getting Rid Of The Rare Races
The Implication Of Vegapunk's Mentioning Of History Getting Rid Of The Rare Races

within the larger context of both the rest of his speech as well as what we've seen of these rare races seems to be that they are being hunted down not because of any perceived strength but because of connections to the void century.

I think it's more obvious with Pudding, as the three-eyed race are capable of reading poneglyphs. There is a clear through line present as to why the World Government would view it as necessary to kill off the three-eyed tribe. They could easily uncover and spread the history that the government is trying so desperately to keep in the past.

With King, I'm not sure what connection the Lunarians could have to the void century, but I am fairly certain that they have to have one. If the World Government only wanted them for their strength, they would not be trying to eradicate them, and instead be trying to either enslave them or otherwise use them. But thinking back to Wano, and Kaido and Kings Backstory, it is fairly clear that the government had every intention of killing King after they finished experimenting on him, making his strength a secondary and a convenient thing that could be toyed with before killing him (experiments that are most likely linked to the creation of the Seraphim). Why not just recruit Lunarians to the Marines like they did with the giants, another race known for their strength? Unless they also have a connection to the void century that would make their existence far more problematic for the World Government. Perhaps the Lunarians were large players in the 100 year war, much like how those with the will of D were implied to be. Or maybe it's because they were said to once be the residence on top of the Red Line before it was overtaken by the Celestial Dragons.

I honestly don't think we have enough info to go off of yet to properly make predictions, but I do believe that King, Pudding and the like are going to become very important moving forward.

No because I don’t think we as a fandom talk enough about the orphanage points system.

Because what the fuck?

What do you mean these kids have to rack up enough points to be able to eat?????

And the one who loses points the most is Atsushi who is already routinely starved.

Like Atsushi had no one, the staff hate him and the kids bully and terrorise him so that they can survive.

It doesn’t matter if he’s actually at fault or not because he’ll never be believed by anyone. It’s why the hammer incident happened because some kids accused him of stealing.

Not only was Atsushi abandoned by his parents but he was never able to rely on anyone. He was terrified and hurting and no one cared.

Everyone around him was using him for their own gain. It didn’t matter if he was hurt because he’s Atsushi.

And that’s been his reality for at minimum 7 years which to put that into perspective is the same amount of time that Chuuya’s been with the Port Mafia.

That’s Fifteen, Stormbringer, the Dragons Head incident, the creation of and the reunion of Soukoku.

That’s insane.

It really says a lot about the “survival of the fittest” mentality of the headmaster.

Just imagine Atsushi trying to save up enough points at the Agency because he doesn’t question that it would be different here.

And everyone having to tell him that he doesn’t have to earn the right to eat or sleep or any other basic necessity.

Which I’m sure all feeds into Atsushi feeling like he needs permission to live.

It’s such a tragic and yet important part of his upbringing that I would love to see explored more.

That and the whole thing of Atsushi not being allowed to own his own possessions and things. And how suddenly having money, having a place to live.

Learning it’s okay that he can buy things and own things without.

Also just the heartbreaking realisation that the only thing that Atsushi has that belonged to him is his ability.

And they took that from him too.

manga page from bungou stray dogs of atsushi pushing a great big door. the orphanage director stands behind him and aids his pushing. they're both screaming in determination

smth smth bsd’s recurring theme of your past not defining who you are but facing your past being necessary to move on anyway. the symbolism of atsushi’s abuser being the one to push him forward despite atsushi’s dislike for him—you cannot get rid of him. you cannot stop caring. you will cry when your father dies and you will hate him for it. you will never get rid of the ghost that haunts you but sometimes acknowledging it is the first step to healing. can anyone hear me

Hrm hrm today I’m having thoughts about Kuina and her overwhelming Lost Boy vibes and how like. You NEVER GET Lost Girls like that. Narratively, she is The Girl Who Didn’t Grow Up. She will always be eleven and perfect, immortalized in memory. In Zoro’s mind, she is forever just a little bit older and a little bit taller than him. Even now when he remembers her, he pictures her face from an upward angle. She will ALWAYS be “older” and yet she will NEVER be more than eleven. I want to know what was happening in Zoro’s head when he turned 12 and realized he was older than she would ever get to be. I just. All the vibes, give them to me. This is one of the things that just gets me every fucking time!!!

(Sabo is also positioned like this, and is a fairly straightforward example up until it gets subverted by him ACTUALLY GROWING UP. Sabo is what happens when the lost boy grows up and it’s fucking FASCINATING.)

I think the key thing is, in order to be a "lost boy" narrative and not just a tragically dead child character, there needs to have been an expectation of greatness. It's not that little girls don't die in fiction, or that they aren't mourned. But this particular type of narrative emphasizes the specific grief of the loss of incredible potential, which isn't a thing dead little girl characters usually get. They're usually narratives about the loss of innocence or the fragility of life and the injustice of mortality, and Kuina has a little of that - how unfair it is for her life to be cut short. But it's also the bit of, if you'll let me get lyrical for a moment, you could have done so much more if you only had time.

as people grow up, one of the things we have to deal with is the loss of the possibilities of what we could have been, because we can only become one of our possible selves. Even if you become great, even if you're happy, even if you made the best possible choice, you still have to make that decision that to become this I must give up on becoming that. Lost Boys don't ever get to become, so they are enshrined with all that potential still in them. All of the people they could have been, all of the paths they might have taken.

(A thing that drives me crazy: balancing the grief of growing up with the grief of not-growing-up. The tragedy of becoming and the tragedy of never getting to become. The dozens of ghosts of possible selves that every adult carries around with them. Not relevant to the current discussion, but still, a thing to think about!)

There's also the fact that she gets set up with a projected character arc - we can see how she might've grown and dealt with her insecurities and overcome the obstacles in her path, but she'll never get to do it. And Zoro can take their shared dream on himself and make that his responsibility, but he can't resolve her emotional baggage for her, because that's not how that works. And we don't know! Maybe she wouldn't ever have managed it! But Kuina-the-confident-adult is just one of the many possible people she'll never get to be.

thinking about imu as the antithesis of luffy and what he wants to be. imu might be the most powerful person in the world, and yet they must have very little freedom. they could control most of the world, but only from the shadows. their very power is dependent on the world thinking they—the sole ruler of the entire world—don't exist. and to keep something so big a secret must come with a lot of restrictions on what they can and can't do. what imu has is exactly what luffy doesn't want: power at the cost of freedom.

tbh i think that scene is less about atsushi “learning the truth abt dazai” and much more about him finally being able to acknowledge how much of himself he sees in akutagawa without the mental block of his warped perception of dazai. and even then i don’t see this seriously impacting atsushi’s relationship with dazai like this is about his relationship with aku
