My Cartoon For This Week’s Guardian Books.

A sunny autumn day, leaves blow from the trees and two runners enter the park. One carries a coffee and the other has a lead attached to a dog who runs ahead ethusiastically. The first runner says “I’mtoobusytoreadsoIstartedlisteningtoaudiobooksat2xspeed.It’sincrediblehowmuchyoucangetthroughthatway.” The second runner replies “MetooI’vefinishedTolstoyandIshouldbedonewithProustbytheendoftheweek.” (In case your reader messes up the dialogue, it is the following exchange with no spaces, intended to evoke the feeling of hearing text at 2x speed: “I’m too busy to read so I started listening to audiobooks at 2x speed. It’s incredible how much you can get through that way.” “Me too I’ve finished Tolstoy and I should be done with Proust by the end of the week”)

Image: a floodlight projects the image of a bat onto the sky. Buildings are aflame and clouds of smoke rise ominously. Inside his apartment, Batman reads a novel with a scowl. Caption: The crime wave raged across Gotham City, but it was book club tomorrow and Batman had, once again, left a great deal of the reading until the last minute.

I've seen a lot of fics disappear from my bookmarks, some 10+ years old, because they were added to an unrevealed collection. It makes me wonder if people realize what your fic being added to a collection actually means and if the authors approved it automatically without realizing what would happen.

If someone adds your fic to their collection, they can hide it! They can mark the collection as unrevealed and your fic will be unreadable to anyone other than them! If you're writing works for a surprise event, like a Secret Santa, this is really nice.

But if you're just writing and someone adds your fic to a collection for their own personal use and marks it as unrevealed, that. . . really sucks.

I bookmarked this fic in 2017, almost 5 years ago. Knowing me, the fic itself was probably at least a couple years old at the time I bookmarked it.

This is a 5+ year old fic that is completely inaccessible now because it was added to a collection that, as far as I can tell, is literally just for the collection owner's own reference. There's almost 30 fics in the collection, all of them unrevealed.

Please don't blindly accept collection requests and if your works ARE in a collection, make sure that they aren't being hidden without your knowledge or consent.

Crowley gets a call for roadside assistance. Someone has broken down. Have they, really?

A short and silly fic, inspired by the inestimable poet Harauld Hughes (i.e. Richard Ayoade).

Why the fuck are all the songs in the world about these two idiots?!

My two cents (or a farthing) in putting together a breakup divorce temporary separation playlist for the ineffable husbands. I think Crowley and Aziraphale will both vehemently deny getting teary-eyed at some of the lyrics, or in Crowley's case bawling along drunk 'Sshtay with me-e-ee'.

I have faith that these angelic entities, who have been through so much together, will find each other stumbling through some major fuck ups and will end up together again. Holding hands at least. The playlist starts out with some serious heartache and pain and morphs more into hope and faith at the end. With a nightingale.

Music by: David Arnold, Brian Eno, John Cale, Archive, Michelle Gurevich, Shakespears Sister, Beck, Michael Kiwanuka, Chris Isaak, Karine Polwart, John Grant, Missy Higgings, The Irrepressibles, Daniel Lanois, Peggy Lee, Joseph Arthur, Angus & Julia Stone, Ane Brun, Ben Harper, Racoon, Ada, Hilda Gudnadottir, Cosmo Sheldrake

There she goes is simultaneously heartbreaking and fluffy sweet and uplifting. I cried several times. Stellar performances.

Title: The Thorougly Engrossing Novel. Panel one: Our hero (a pinkish egg-shaped blob with stick arms and legs) briskly walks along reading his book but - OH NO! - he is just about to walk of a cliff! Panel Two: He has gone over the cliff!! As he falls towards heaven-knows-what, his attention is still fully engaged by his book. Panels Three and Four: he has landed in the ocean and is carried out to sea. He is still reading the book as he vanishes from sight. Panels Five and Six: Some time later, our hero is washed up in a sandy cove. The tide gently nudges him up the beach as lies on his back reading. A concerned passer-by asks "Are you ok?" and he replies "Yes, just finishing my book". Panel seven: The book finished, he strides manfully off the beach and up a hill towards a bookshop. Panel eight: Our hero, having visited the shop, now briskly walks along reading his NEW book but - OH NO! - he is just about to walk of a cliff!
