Tag yourself as these humanities subjects

all songs can be found on my dark academia playlist here

English: ‘Oxford Comma’ by Vampire Weekend

shades of obsidian ink spilt across your lined pages, imagining book characters out of passersby on the street, falling in love with the person who makes your coffee every dew stained morning, torn paper quotes embellishing your bedroom walls, sentimental connections to your favourite books

Geography: ‘Time Above The Earth’ by The Kooks

embellishing boring days with vibrant clothing, planning your days around being awake to watch the sky sweep for watercolour streaks, small souvenirs hiding in the crevices of your room, spilling your thoughts into your phone at the most obscure hours

Philosophy: ‘Hollywood Forever’ by FINNEAS

diluted light leaking through the unloved window panes, cream sweatshirts and checkered shirts, beads of gold dripping from every debate you argue, opal hearts with black taints that can’t be wiped away like dust, silly kisses where you blow air into each other’s mouth

Religion: ‘Breathe’ by Riley Baron

rows of fresh apple trees in overgrown orchards, white dresses that brush against nature’s hair, meaningful symbols held close to your heart, pressed wildflowers hidden between old books, pieces of lace delicately hanging on your body

History: ‘The Night We Met’ by Lord Huron

strolling through unknown museums and falling in love with every lost soul exhibited there, second hand clothing loved more by you, browned books faded but rich in emotion and information, documenting the best years of your life on film cameras

Law: ‘Instant Coffee’ by Bugs

giant echoing rooms with people too full of what they have to say, drinking iced coffee like its water, subdued neon lights spreading hues around your room, adorning your body in layers of clothing, nocturnal days so you can chatter with your friend the moon at night

Slytherclaw Book Recommendations

because I’m basic. But also because I keep getting Sytherin and then Ravenclaw and then Slytherin on house quizzes. If Slytherin and Ravenclaw were a venn diagram, I would want whatever falls in the sliver where the two circles overlap. Books that are a beautiful mix of ambition aided by unprecedented wit, calculated cunning abetted by strange wisdom. So here goes. (Also, goes without saying, but fuck J.K. Rowling)

The Ballad Of Songbirds and Snakes: Suzanne Collins- prequel to the Hunger Games the protagonist of which is Snow. A lot of people hate this book and I think thats really invalid. It is the PERFECT slytherclaw book. It examines power, control and authority, and the route of wit, charm and intelligence that the mind can take to get to those ideals. Just an overall great work on the nature of the State, fascism, nationalism, dissent and its cost, brutality and human nature.

Macbeth: William Shakespeare- it is Shakespeare’s shortest play, so its a breeze to read but also is just so clever in the way it is written! I don’t need to point that out about Shakespeare but my god if the writing and structure and meter isn’t something to make a ravenclaw absolutely lose their minds over it. For the consideration of your more slytherin side, it has a hot lady villain. No but seriously, Lady Macbeth is such a fierce character not to mention, the whole play is fuelled by her ambition for power through her husband. So try it.

Silence of the Lambs: Thomas Harris. Yes this is that cannibal novel on which that cannibal movie was based and that other homoerotic show with the really handsome dudes. Anyways, its about two people who are intrigued with each other’s psyches but are also trying to outsmart each other. I enjoyed the book more than the movie actually.

If We Were Villains by M.L Rio: Dark Academia tumblr ate this shit up. Its a bunch of friends in an elite arts college/Shakespeare conservatory thing. It has Shakespeare and murder. The things that we really do love here on tumblr dot come. Its just really beautifully written and over time I’ve come to appreciate it more than The Secret History so.

The Queen’s Thief Series: Megan Whalen Turner: this book series has possibily the most slytherclaw protagonist I have ever witnessed in literature. Saying anything about this book series is too much. It needs to be jumped into blind so allow me to give you a synopsis that justifies it being on this list and gives you an idea of what it is about. I can’t. Suffice it to say, its a series based around political intrigue, court politics, war. It is funny, witty and cunning. Amazing foreshadowing. Amazing worldbuilding. Morally grey characters making morally grey choices. Just………*chef’s kiss*. Pick it up on a whim it will not let you down.

That was that. Also, fuck J.K Rowling✌🏽✌🏽✌🏽

How you, yes, YOU, can be both PUNK and A PRETENTIOUS BASTARD (dark academic) at the SAME TIME.

(yes, I do recognise that making a 'how-to' type list is basically the opposite of punk, leave me alone.)

Read poetry (I highly recommend John Cooper Clarke).

Be angry all the time, not at people around you, but at capitalism, social injustice, the government, and societal constructs.

Read Marx.

Doc Martens should be your best friend. Yes, they're expensive. But they're also high quality and will last you a lifetime (I've had a pair for about five years now, and they've literally grown with me).

Ratty blazers are cool.

Drink fruit juice, don't take drugs. In the beginning, the punk movement was very anti-drugs, so gangs of them would get together to drink fruit juice instead.

Only quote the insults from Shakespeare's works.

Wash your hair in beer. (Just trust me. My great grandmother washed her hair with beer, and she had great hair.)

Berets

Black velvet (whilst usually more goth) can definitely be adopted.

Know that 'modern' or 'new' doesn't necessarily mean 'better'.

Go to protests, talks, lectures, anywhere where you might be able to make a difference. Say something about anything you feel passionately about, don't stand for things you feel are wrong.

How to be a sustainable dark academic:

Buy clothes from charity shops or second hand online. I know that this is technically part of the aesthetic already, but it's still worth mentioning.

Glass is really difficult to recycle, so use your old wine bottles for candle holders, vases, water bottles, or anything else you can think of.

Try not to wear polyester, or to buy it. I know that it's cheap and easy to get a hold of, but it really isn't that good for the environment, especially if you wash it often, because plastic micropartickes come away from the clothing and are washed away in the water.

Big plus: candles are good for the aesthetic. It might be a bit of a stretch, but limiting your electricity use through using sunlight in the day and candles when it gets dark? Very dark academia.

Trains and buses are criminally underrated modes of transport. And they fit the aesthetic too, because I mean, have you ever seen a Regency poet driving a Prius? I think not.

You could also walk, I guess, if you're a peasant. Or travel in a carriage, which is far more stylish.

Basically, whenever possible, limit your use of single-person vehicles. And things like Über or Taxis too, if you can take a train or a bus instead.

Take a reusable coffee cup with you. If you always have one with you, you won't have to buy coffee in one of those takeaway cups that can't be recycled when you go bookshopping.

Speaking of books, again, try to buy second hand. I regret to say it, but the printing industry isn't exactly the pinnacle of sustainability. There's also always the plus of finding a really nicely bound vintage book if you buy second hand.

I feel like most people in the dark academia community already have this in the bag, but fountain pens. Even just a small thing like throwing away empty biros can really add up. Using a cartridge pen with an ink well or something similar could reduce that wasted plastic, even if just by a very small amount. It fits the aesthetic, too. Every little thing counts.

When it comes to furniture, this aesthetic has it in the bag. Buying second hand and vintage is far better for the environment than buying newer furniture.

Mend your clothes! Again, I think that this really fits the aesthetic of blazers witb elbow patches, but honestly, if you have one vintage wool blazer that you mend over and over for years to come, it's far better for the environment than buying a new polyester blazer from H&M every time you get a hole in the sleeve.

I feel like as far as aesthetics go, DA us one of the best in terms of sustainability, because of the focus on vintage and antique items.

Also, it is A-okay if you don't stick to doing everything sustainably all day every day. It just isn't realistic to be the perfect person, and as long as you make the choice consciously, it's all okay!

Stay safe :)

obsessed with this girl in my bio class who always brings a full litre bottle of coke to every lesson, today she said “im just genuinely not a nice person” to my bio teacher when he asked her why she swore so much. In year eleven before one of our gcse exams as we were lining up outside the exam hall she came up to me and said “what exam is this” and when i told her physics she said “yeah i think i can do that” and got in line

dark academia but it’s online school

- waking up early in the morning to watch the sunrise, even though you don’t actually need to

- staying up late to read or paint because you don’t have to get up early

- handwriting assignments that should be typed and submitted digitally

- having a coffee cup with you, rather than a thermos because you don’t have to take it anywhere

- still getting ready and dressed so that you can feel focused on your work in the mornings

- emailing your teachers to see if they have any extra reading related to the topic

- turning in all of the assignments for the week earlier than the rest of your class because you wanted to finish them early

- not doing any assignments for the week because you were too interesting in researching about different planets or the deep sea

If This Essay Doesn’t Kill Me, Nothing Will. I’m Currently Grappling With The Concept Of Connecting

If this essay doesn’t kill me, nothing will. I’m currently grappling with the concept of connecting Du Bois’ concept of double consciousness with post-structuralism. I don’t know whether I’m being very clever or very stupid. (x)
