Khernips

Khernips, or Lustral Water, is a mixture used in Hellenic Polytheism to ritually wash away miasma. It is not hard to make, and is an incredibly rewarding addition to any ritual.

To make it you’ll need a few things on hand:

Fresh water (I use tap water, but if you can manage spring water is even better)

Sea Water (if you don’t have this, you can use a sea salt and water mixture)

Dried herbs (I sometimes don’t have access to herbs, and just use a lit match)

A lighter/match

Bowl

Towel

So to make it, you mix together your fresh water and sea water, and then you light your herbs and drop them in. Some people use incense opposed to matches or herbs as well.

After you’ve finished preparing it, you can choose to ask one of the Theoi to bless it, especially a water/sea related Theos. Then you wash your hands in face with it, and dry off.

Y’all I want to throw massive kudos out to the Roger Williams Park Zoo for a choice they made today: rather than joining in on a GenAI trend all the zoos are doing right now, they chose to support and spotlight an artist on their staff!

The big thing right now is these GenAI “figurine toys” of zookeepers or zoo management. And instead they shared a version drawn by one of their staff!

Go give them some love, if you’re on FB. Too many zoos are really getting into GenAI and just whitewashing the climate change / copyright issues that come with it, so I want this zoo to get as much positive feedback as we can muster for making a better choice.

Classics students are the most fucking insufferable people. You make one reference to mythology, and they jump on you like a pack of wolves, looking for one mistake that they can correct. If you tell them you like a myth retelling, they automatically tell you how horrible the research/characterization was. Naming epithets/cult titles and favoured shrines or places

Invocation of kharis

Request or thanksgiving

Farewell

Constructing prayers within this framework can be as elaborate or simple as your need requires. The greater the need the longer and more flattering the prayer.

But how to recognise this formula in traditional prayers in order to construct one of your own? I’ve outlined a few examples and colour-coordinated the key points to match the formula above.
