Ok Ummm Sorry But Why Are People Talking Suddenly Like Irl Domestic Violence Victims Get Any Sort Of

ok ummm sorry but why are people talking suddenly like irl domestic violence victims get any sort of widespread sympathy or support??? like, for one, let’s just establish that it’s silly to complain that real, living, breathing people are being treated with more sympathy than a fictional character. but even that alone would also be completely wrong, because… rl victims are not treated well at all??? did we just forget all the victim-blaming, the slander, the cross-examining, the doubt, and the legal institutions that are weaponized against rl victims all the time???

if you somehow see someone condemning rl abuse but dismissing fictional abuse, it’s because they only care about rl abuse in the broadest and most conceptual sense. rl abuse is hated as a contextless idea, or when it’s committed by someone the person doing the condemning doesn’t care about, like some dude they’ve never talked to or some celebrity they have no personal attachment towards. condemnation of, like, weinstein, who most people do not know anything about nor care about, is not the same as popular support for victims as a whole. compare the reactions to weinstein vs reactions to johnny depp or even (god) joe biden. the difference is entirely in how much attachment people have to these abusers.

a character like endeavor makes people trot out an entire circus’ worth of excuses not because these people actually care about irl abuse as opposed to fictional abuse, but because the narrative gives endeavor a way of playing on people’s heartstrings and allowing them to nurture an attachment to him, which they will then vigorously defend even at the expense of his victims. they do this as well with rl abusers who they particularly like or have some sort of connection to. it’s not that ppl’s condemnations of abuse are either existent or non-existent—it’s that they’re frequently circumstantial.

please, let’s be finished with the insinuations that rl victims receive care and support or even, like, lip service that isn’t getting extended to fictional characters.

it’s very cute natsuo and touya shared a room. clearly they had so much space, and money, it’s pretty much a decision that they really wanted to share. They sleep side by side with their futons, and the picture with Touya at his computer desk showed another computer desk littered with toys younger children would play with, like a mech, so I’m guessing that’s Natsuo’s. It’s just very cute.

Something I also want to point out - Touya has books on his desk. Likely because he’s in middle school and probably studying to get into a good high school. But also given we’ve been privy to the fact he does in fact write randomly poetic stuff (the whole ‘his light invites darkness’ thing) and Smash telling us he writes in  a refined way and signs his name like an artist, it also shows us:

It’s Very Cute Natsuo And Touya Shared A Room. Clearly They Had So Much Space, And Money, It’s Pretty

notice it’s Touya who has a lamp on his side of their futons? I’m sure this is showing us that Touya also likes reading before bed. Of the two brothers, at least when Natsuo was that young, Touya is probably very bookish. Just an interesting characterization.

Some instances that I feel show how some messages MHA are detrimental, especially on how victims react to their abuser, can be gauged by responses that tend to be highly prevalent in the fandom.

(Definitely not every fan, but a great majority).

Endeavor is a great example. Whenever you post criticizing his approach to atonement (and ultimately criticizing Horikoshi’s writing), you get BOMBARDED by people either belittling you for not liking his character or essentially forcing you to like his character by frantically writing “at least he tried” arguments.

If I have the CHOICE whether to forgive his character or not, especially given he goes through an atonement arc and not a redemption arc, why is any form of criticism about his abusive behavior and essentially his abuse of power practically ignored by the story unacceptable?

The message was detrimental because people operate on the notion that for victims to be good people, they must forgive and even help their abusers. MHA presents people who choose not to forgive him as either a monster (Toya) or inconvenient (Natsuo). And if they are still unforgiving, they must admire the abuser for doing the bare minimum (taking responsibility; this is also about Natsuo).

Essentially, they are considered "imperfect victims" because they weren't merciful in their approach to their abuser.

The majority of the fandom tends to ignore the lack of actual consequences for Endeavor's actions because he vows to talk to Toya every day. Insisting that doing the bare minimum, which is recognizing his son's existence and suffering, became his "hell" is a wildly fucked up message, in my opinion.

It harps on the issue mentioned above that if a victim isn't receptive to forgiveness or doesn't act "demure," they are seen as an inconvenience—which is how the Todoroki family ultimately views Toya.

On a less critical note, I'll vent, so if you don't like this, just ignore it.

I'm so fucking tired of stories depicting imperfect victims as people who deserve death and torture. Plus, having to be on the brunt of so many people acting like you're morally fucked because you're not impressed with how a writer handled abuse. Horikoshi is not the first writer to try to atone a character who is an abuser (and he isn't the first to fail at that, either).

I'm not about to dick-ride every decision every author makes. Especially if the message convinces some audience members that victims are inherently broken if they can't bring themselves to forgive and/or admire someone who hurt them.

MAJOR BNHA 423 SPOILERS
MAJOR BNHA 423 SPOILERS

this line is so jarring to me because if shigaraki really is gone... where are his friends waiting?

up until now we always took their survival for granted, no matter the situation they ended up in. toga's blood loss. dabi's quirk awakening at the brink of death.

but calling back on shiggy's line "even if [...] i turned into an empty shell, i'd still need to become a hero to those guys"

MAJOR BNHA 423 SPOILERS

suddenly has me worried about the fate of toga and dabi.

they're waiting for him.
