Hi! I like your blog.
My question is: Why do you think George had more resentment for Paul after the breakup? John was even less supportive of his songwriting efforts.
Hi.
Because there is so much information around, some of my opinions and theories keep changing or adapting. In this case in particular, I could dig into several points from George POV:
John often dismissed George's songwriting but he didn't dismiss his guitar work while Paul did both.
Paul did sue him. Wherever you think Paul was right or wrong , he did sue him so that created more conflict at the time than with John.
Paul didn't fully tell George (and Ringo) his side until much later, or at least that's what Paul said in the anthology. Instead, he ghosted him.
Paul did announce the Beatles breakup to promote his album and to make John angry.
But most of these points are almost superficial in comparison with other things they did to each other before and after. George even said later on that Paul made the right call suing them, that he appreciated being free of the Beatles and praised Paul's contributions to his songs. So why did the resentment with Paul seem to linger?
My current theory is that everything hurt worse because the breakup conflict started at the same time that George's mother was dying or had just died. Not just that but his father was also in the hospital for a while too so every negative feeling he had during that time was probably multiplied or left a deeper wound. Paul's actions in that context were more hurtful to George than what was intended or would have been in any other circumstance.
Paul ghosted George while his mother was dying.
Paul announced the Beatles breakup while George's mother was dying (there was an audio of him singing his songs to his parents around that time in the hospital and she asked him if they would be in the next album).
Paul sued him barely months after his mother died.
And again, this is not me making Paul a villain. They all had their own reasons to do what they did. But I think that George losing his mom around that time is often ignored when it kinda helps to understand some of his actions during and after the breakup. The timing was really really unfortunate.
The consolation is that, though it took time, Paul and George managed to repair their relationship and also that they always kept some sort of contact through all.
