Every year, we’re lucky to have great sponsors for our nonprofit events. Scrivener, a 2022 Camp NaNoWriMo sponsor, is an award-winning writing app that has been enthusiastically adopted by best-selling novelists and novices alike. Today, Scrivener director Julia Pierce is here to share some tips on writing your story’s middle:
We’re midway through Camp and around now, some of you may be starting to experience the curse of the saggy middle. This isn’t just a euphemism for what happens when the need to meet your daily word count target becomes all-consuming and takes precedence over your daily exercise routine. Nope, it’s that bit where the doubts about your story’s structure start to creep in… Is that storyline really as gripping as you first thought? Would the hero really make that choice…?
Unfortunately, writing the midsection of a novel is tricky—it’s where the hard work happens, the plot is driven on, characters grow and plans are tried (and fail). With this part taking up around 50% of the word count, a good rate of momentum is vital to carry the reader with you from your perfect beginning to the novel’s climax. So, how can you pep up your prose? Here are some tried and tested methods:

The Principal had kept his promise. He had tried to break Liv every moment he could.
But she wasn’t going to let him.
It had been days of tests. From being left alone to being followed every second of the day, from climbing to fighting. He wasn’t letting anything stop him.
To be honest, it was wearing on her.
Maybe if I just give in it will all be over. She thought to herself.
She shook her head and pushed the thought aside. She would never let him win.
Her door clicked open, and two guards entered the room. Class time. She held out her wrists, and they clamped the shackles around them. They all walked down the hallway.
She thought they were heading towards the gym when they started going a different way.
“Where are we going?” She asked, turning to the guard on her left.
Both guards stayed silent as they kept walking through the facility.
They went up two flights of stairs before arriving in front of a door. The guard on her right opened the door and pushed her inside.
Liv stumbled and found herself face to face with the Principal.
He smiled at her and unlocked her shackles. “Welcome to your test.”
Liv rubbed her wrists as she glared at him.
“Where am I?”
“You don’t recognize this place?”
Liv looked around the room and noticed that they were standing on a catwalk above the gym, but something was off. She moved to the edge of the catwalk and looked down.
The Principal walked behind her and put his hand on her shoulder. “Do you like the changes?”
Liv just stared. The entire room was filled with water. The two-story gym filled with water. Her heart started to race.
She tried to back up, but The Principal grabbed her by the shoulders and kept her in place.
“Interesting.” He pushed her closer to the edge. “It seems that our brave student is scared of water.”
“I-I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Her voice sounded shakier than she wanted.
Her heart started to beat out of her chest, as she stared at the water.
The Principal took a step back. “Then show me. Jump in and swim to the bottom. If you don’t,” he let out a quiet laugh, “then you have to promise to trust me. Just like Conner does.”
Liv turned and glared at him. He just smiled and motioned to the water. She turned back around.
Come on. I can do this. She thought to herself.
But she just stood there. She couldn’t get herself to move. She wanted to turn and run, but her legs wouldn’t let her. So she just stood there, staring at the water.
Why can’t I do this? She could have blamed it on the multiple tests or the sleep deprivation, but she knew it was fear.
Tears started to form in her eyes. She tried to wipe them away, but her arms wouldn’t move. She just stood there for what felt like an hour, until the Principal grabbed her shoulders and pulled her away from the edge.
“You can’t do it.” He said trying to hide his smile. “That means you have to promise that you will trust me.”
The exhaustion set in, and Liv didn’t want to fight it anymore.
“I promise.” She said looking down at her feet.
The Principal grabbed her chin and forced her to look at him.
“Promise what?” He had stopped trying to hide his smile.
Liv tried to look away, but his grip just tightened.
Too tired to fight she looked right at him, “I promise to trust you.”
He smiled and let go of her chin. He motioned to one of the guards standing by the door, and they put the shackles back on her wrists.
Feeling broken she let them guide her back to her cell as tears streamed down her face.

Prompt: Slammed into a Wall
Fandom: Original Work
@badthingshappenbingo
Part 1
Ruby was woken up by being slammed against a wall. Still groggy, she opened her eyes.
“W-where am I?” She mumbled glancing around the room. Her eyes, still adjusting, could only see the arm that was pushing her against the wall.
The muscular arm held her by the front of her sweatshirt. A familiar laugh echoed in her mind.
That’s right. Something had happened in an alleyway. Some goon, no someone else, had pinned her down. How was he able to do that? She should have been able to fight him and get away, but something happened.
She grabbed his hand and pulled at it.
“Let me go.” She muttered weakly.
He just let out another laugh. He raised his free hand, and Ruby could feel something cold wrap around her neck. He then let her go, and she collapsed to the floor.
With her vision becoming more clear she glanced around the room again. It looked like a gym, with a climbing rope in the corner and mats lining the walls.
Ruby got to her feet and looked the man in the eyes.
“Who are you? And what is this?” She said pointing at her neck.
The man looked intrigued. “You really don’t remember me?”
“I wouldn’t be asking you if I did.”
He let out a huge sigh. “I am who created you. You only have your powers because of me.”
“I don’t remember you,” Ruby repeated. “I don’t remember getting my powers. I just remember walking to school, and waking up a week later.”
“That’s good.” He said with a large smile. “That was what we wanted to happen.”
“That doesn’t answer my question. Who are you?”
He let out his familiar laugh. “My name is Mick, but you called me Doctor Myers.”
Ruby stepped back shocked. That name was so familiar. It filled her with fear, and she remembered many nightmares containing that name.
“What did you do to me?”
“It doesn’t matter what I did. The only thing that matters is what I am going to get you to do. Starting right now. Your powers are good, but they can become better. I understand that you like to run up walls, but you could do something stronger. We have tests and experiments set up that will get you to that point.”
Ruby took a step back as he kept rambling on about the tests and experiments.
“I’m not doing any of that.” She said interrupting him.
Doctor Myers smiled at her. “You do not have a choice.” He pulled out a remote from his pocket and pressed a button.
A sharp pain erupted in her neck. She stumbled forward as her vision started to go blurry.
“What is this?” She asked sitting down on the floor.
Doctor Myers stepped forward. “Let’s just call it an obedience collar. If you don’t cooperate then the punishments will get worse. So I would learn how to obey.”
He stepped closer just as her vision went dark. Again.
Trying out a new style
