When somebody walks in on you watching House MD and asks why you're laughing so much when they're literally discussing why a kid just went blind and you have to awkwardly explain to them that you're actually laughing because House is going through drug withdrawals and it's funny because he's so fucked up or soemthing

Definitely okay! Yes, characters should obviously still have flaws but 1: The things mentioned don't really contribute to the story or teach a lesson, 2: The characters mentioned will still be themselves and not a hollowed out version of themselves, one strange flaw like that does not change their personality or really how we view them, and 3, probably most importantly: It's your own work of fanfiction! You have the right to change characters as you please, even if it could be seen as a downgrade, or watering them down, or even just making them too good compared to their original. That's what fanfictions are for; doing what you want to do.

Is it a bad thing to redesign / rewrite these characters to be potentially less egregious (e.g., writing Kiyo’s sister as a hallucination rather than a split considering it wasn’t handled well, or making Teruteru NOT dr!g people, making Hifumi NOT a l0l1con)? I have thoughts about all this but I don’t know if it would be considered rude or “watering things down”.

Sometimes I forget because I am charmed by him, but Benson is so viscerally terrifying in certain moments that you have to assume that it must've bled in a little beforehand.

Like, maybe Randy’s on a closing shift with him and, by the time they finish up, everyone else’s long since departed and even though it’s obscenely late, Randy doesn’t really mind, Benson’s his most adept, reserved coworker and his cigarette breaks give Randy a minute to himself. When it’s just the two of them working together Benson puts his head down and gets on with it--same as him--so there’s an infrequent calm they both appreciate. They’re both too beat to bother being sociable so it’s mostly Benson’s low grunts and head tilts and Randy’s answering nods, nothing to disturb the silence or the comfortable routine they settle into, the kind that accompanies mind-numbing exhaustion.

Then Benson’s got the keys out ready to lock up, and Randy’s got his jacket on, idle & half-asleep waiting by the door, holding it open even though he could already be on the way to his car, because leaving together completes the ritual of it all. Across the empty dining room, he watches as Benson flicks out the lights and in the split-second before his eyes adjust, in the immediate aftermath of 16 hours under buzzing fluorescents, silently awaiting Benson’s approach, Randy Bradley is the most scared he’s ever been in his entire, petrified existence.
