âA date? I...well, I mean, I suppose if itâs someone who really liked me, I would hope they would ask me?â Ana fidgets a little, looking perplexed. âI canât say Iâve ever asked someone else out...or even thought to, really. I like to spend time with my friends, or with close lovers. But just...asking someone else on a âdateâ isnât really something Iâd do. If they asked me, thatâd be wonderful...it would certainly take the guess-work out of knowing if they wanted to spend time alone with me or not.â

âYouâll always have a place here.â
Anafenza awoke with a start. She blinked her eyes, looking around in confusion. Â She wasnât in her bed â the fact that she was dry gave that fact away, since sheâd long ago submerged her cot in the tub to sleep in. Â She slowly sat up, taking in her surroundings.
She could hear a steady drip from overhead, echoing through the space she was in. Â Stalagmites and stalactites filled her view, so she knew immediately she was in a cave of sorts. Â Turning her head more she saw and recognized a sight that made her think she was still dreaming. Â Shrouded in darkness, a large tree choked out by a blood-red vine that disappeared among the branches.
âJessikaâs tree,â she murmured, half-asleep still. Â âAm I still dreaming?â
âIf you are, this is one helluva weird dream,â came a voice beside her.  Ana jumped, whipping her head around.  A blue-skinned woman sat up, blinking sleepily.  Her face was speckled with bright-blue spots, and her long blue hair fell down behind her and onto the ground.  She looked around, and Ana could see her pointed ears for a moment, reminding her of an elezen.  Though, this woman didnât have the same lankiness to her; if anything, she was a blue hyur with pointed ears.  Yet, Ana thought, she seemed familiarâŠ
âWhere are we,â she asked, looking at Ana again. Â âAnd why are you naked?â
Anafenza sighed and rolled her eyes. Â âIâm always naked. Â You still have clothes on, donât worry.â
The other woman looked down and back up, nodding, then looked back around the space. Â âFair. Â What is this place?â
âIâve only ever seen it in my dreams,â Ana admitted, still looking around.  âI thought the tree represented my soul, and the vine wasâŠa curse I had inherited.â
The blue womanâs eyes widened, and she gave a low whistle as she looked at the tree.
The two women sat in silence, not sure what to do next, not sure if they were dreaming or if this was real. Finally, Ana cleared her throat.
âAnafenza.â
The blue woman turned and looked at her in confusion. Â âI beg your pardon?â
âMy name,â she replied. âIâm Anafenza. Â Or just Ana.â
The blue woman nodded in acknowledgement, then offered a hand to Ana. Â âJess. Â Jessica St. Peter, but you can call me ââ
âJessiy,â came a third voice, and the two women turned to look as a third woman stepped from behind the tree. Â Ana gasped â she was wearing black pants and a black top, the shoulders of which were white. A familiar arrow-shaped pendant was attached to her chest. Â But most striking was her resemblance to Jessica: blue skin, bright blue spots, blue hair and eyes. Â If not for the noticeable age difference, Ana would have guessed they were twins.
Jessica noticed the similarity too and gasped.  âHowâŠwhoâŠwho are you?â
The third woman took a breath, offering a small smile. Â âCommander Jessica St. Peter.â
Anafenza and the first Jessica both went wide-eyed. Â The second Jessica shrugged.
Finally, the first Jessica â the younger of the two â coughed a laugh.  âWellâŠif weâre not dreamingâŠwhat the hell is going on?â
The women were gathered in the small room â the âtransporter room,â the Commander had called it â and exchange final goodbyes. Â All had been a giggling mess of nerves since they woke up that morning, though Stormy seemed a bit worse for wear; claimed she had an âaccelerated metabolismâ that allowed her to drink copious amounts of a drink they called âtequila,â she had woken with a splitting headache. Â A quick visit to the sickbay had helped relieve the pain, and the blue girl had spent a tender moment with Doctor Dubois, sharing stories of a woman who they both knew a version of. Â The Commander just watched the exchange silently, but Ana knew the expression was melancholic, as she and her Doctor remembered their fallen lover while talking about Stormyâs alive one. Â Stormy and the Doctor parted with a soft kiss, and then the trio had gone on one last tour of the ship before arriving at the transporter room.
Inside, a low din of activity greeted them as many of the Commanderâs officers worked to finalize the calculations that would send them home. Â âItâs funny,â the Commander remarked, watching them before turning to Anafenza. Â âHow strange this must seem to you. Â All this technology, science, generations ahead of your world.â
Anafenza nodded.  âWe have technology â the Garleans make full use of it â but thisâŠis almostâŠâ
âIndistinguishable from magic?â Stormy smirked, winking at the Commander.
Anafenza shrugged and nodded.  âThat wouldâŠbe a good way to describe it, yes.  But Iâve seen magic,â she continued with a wink.  âIf you can call down a meteor from the heavens, then Iâll believe it.â
Stormy chuckled, but the Commander winced for a moment, her eyes going distant to some memory she didnât want to think of. Â She shook her head to clear it, before smiling again.
The âTrillâ woman, Sano, cleared her throat behind the Commander, and all three turned to look at her. She nodded, almost sadly, clearly not wanting to break up their group.  âMaâam, itâs time.  If we want a shot at getting them home before the window closesâŠâ She trailed off, leaving the implications hanging in the air.
The three woman took in a deep breath, turning back to one another. Â They smiled, before moving in to embrace one another together.
âThis wasâŠquite an experience,â the Commander remarked.
âIt will certainly be a story to tell,â Anafenza continued on with a small nod.
âNo one will believe us,â Stormy countered with a small laugh, and all three laughed together. Â They hugged again, Stormy turning her head to plant a kiss on first the Commanderâs cheek, then turning to Anafenza to do the same. Then, Stormy and Anafenza stepped up onto the illuminated pad. Â Ana gave the blue womanâs hand a quick squeeze, before they parted, standing on opposite sides of the device.
Commander St. Peter smiled at them both. Â âGood luck, and whatever gods you believe in protect you. Â I am so blessed to know you both.â Â She winked at Stormy playfully, but gave Anafenza a genuine smile. Â âYouâre going to do great things, Anafenza of the Ejinn.â
There was a long pause, as the three just stared at one another for another moment. Â Then, the Commander turned her head to her crew. Â âEnergize!â
The light on the pad began to brighten, and a chiming filled the air as swirling motes of light enveloped the two women. Â Anafenza giggled a little, feeling ticklish.
There was an alert on the panel, and Sano began shouting to her team. Â âEngage the chronometric navigational sensors!â
âThey canât get a positive lock! Â Something is throwing the entire equation out of sorts, and the transport canât engage.â
âItâs not that âaether,â is it?â
âNo, we have a positive fix on that.  But there is a quantum imbalance in her signal and the other St. Peterâs.  The buffer is having a hard time maintaining their patterns, like another variable is missingâŠâ
The lights died down, and the chiming subsided. Â Stormy and Ana looked at each other, then at the crew working.
The Commander frowned, shaking her head.  âSomething is missingâŠbut the numbers all check?  We have good locks in both time and space?â  Her crew was nodding and agreeing as she rattled off things Anafenza could not comprehend.
Stormy snapped her fingers, looking at Anafenza.  âSomething isnât missing.  Someone isâŠâ
The Commander paused, blinking, then smacked her forehead.  âOf courseâŠthe computer canât make a firm lock on either of youâŠâ
âUnless you can serve as an anchor,â Anafenza finished. Â âAnd a beacon.â
âJust like in the pocket dimension.â
The Commander hopped onto the pad and took the center spot. Â âAlright Nizeri, try now.â Â She nodded. âEnergize!â
Sano turned to the controls as the officer there worked the panel, and the lights and chimes began anew. She smiled, continuing to direct the officers. Â âPositive lock engaged, they can make it to the pattern buffer! Â Engage the scanners!â
The light overtook Anaâs vision, and the chiming deafened her.
âIâll alwaysâŠremember youâŠboth!  May you walkâŠin the lightâŠof the Crystal!â
