The saddest moments of Star Trek TOS belonged to "throwaway" characters
They all deserved better.
1. Lieutenant Riley - Conscience of the King
Faced with the chance to kill the man who once ordered the executions of thousands (including his family) in the wake of a famine, Riley's chance is stripped from him and he is ordered to stand down.
This is also a devastating moment for the captain himself as the only other remaining survivor of the colony. Kirk stops Riley's drastic actions, which, although damning, were perhaps his only chance of overcoming the guilt of having once been selected to live while others were sent to death.
Both enter a confrontation regarding their shared past, but neither heal.
2. Janice Rand - The Enemy Within
Although it was an "evil extension" of Kirk who perpetrated the assault on Janice Rand in her own room, at this point she only had reason to believe that the assailant was Kirk himself.
Rand is forced to testify with Kirk (the man she thought she loved, a captain with both power and position over her, an officer flanked by his two closest allies, and a man whose proximity in the same ship could endanger her after the testimony) standing over her. Rand even admits to "not wanting to get him into trouble", highlighting how closely her struggle mirrors the victims of everyday workplace violence against women.
What may even be worse are the blatant intimidation tactics Kirk employs throughout the scene. Although he knows he didn't do it (and perhaps suspects foul play), Kirk makes no attempt to empathize with the testimonies of Rand and Fisher regarding what they saw, and he even hints at the danger of them conspiring against a man of his rank.
Rand endured constant objectification in each of her appearances in the series, and would go on to be entirely forgotten after its first season. (Though she would return in The Motion Picture.)
3. Lieutenant "Joey" - The Naked Time
Joey delivered perhaps the most poignant monologue of the series, just moments before his impending death. Though Joey's inhibitions were altered by the infection that would soon kill him, we see later in the episode that the infection forces people express existing wants and needs. Therefore, real are his pleas begging to understand why humanity should be in space at all when it has merely taken and taken... leaving only destruction in its wake and its own to die.
Not only did he bare his own insecurities, Joey also established a central conflict of the entire series: can a utopian vision of the future include acts like leaving six people to waste away on an empty planet?
Tragically, Joey couldn't bear the burden of this conflict alone (no one else had or would mention this guilt at any point in the series) and though his death was prompted by the infection, it only acted as a catalyst for what was truly a su*c*de.
McCoy ruled in the autopsy that Joey might have survived, but he simply gave up fighting.
Musings on Ice-Pick Joe
I'm not sure why no one is talking about Ice-Pick Joe's death scene, especially with rumors of the Ice-Pick Joe prequel circulating the internet.
The scene where Ice-Pick Joe walked by Sofia's window on his way to the fateful meeting with Katya, stopping to lean against the light post long enough to see two silhouettes come together. (I can't be the only one who was getting Blue Velvet vibes in that scene?) Why isn't anyone talking about his longing? The voyeurism? His fear of abandonment stemming from childhood trauma...after all, his mother picked him, of all his siblings, to leave at the orphanage! She left him with nothing but those appleseeds that he carried around in his pockets.
I'm absolutely sure that Sofia was the unnamed child in Joe's flashback (Jodie Foster was so good as the scrappy, androgynous best friend. She did have a limp in that scene when they were running from the cemetery. We don't actually know at what age Sofia lost her leg. And Donny Osmond was the perfect young Ice-Pick Joe!)
If you watch closely, she had the same birthmark on her shoulder in that first awkward kiss scene that Sofia had when she and Katya fought that night of her birthday, when she ripped her blouse and threw her glass of champagne at the wall.)
But back to Joe on the empty street, those shadows against the wall like shadow puppets, and the way the clock motif came back at that moment? Such haunting music, reprised again in the film score during Joe's death (I still cry when I hear "The Demise of Ice-Pick Joe". Linking to it here, because I played it on repeat when the movie was over. Brilliant and haunting.)
Remember how the flashbacks showed us that Ice-Pick Joe was really superstitious and believed that he had inherited his grandmother's gifts? If you watch the way Joe looks at the shadows and then down at his watch, you can see him hesitate before going to the docks. Was he hearing voices?
Most people agree that the shadows on the wall looked like a child, but I'm not sure that Ice-Pick Joe's hesitation to go to the dock was about his own son. I think the shadows looked more like that kiss flashback when he and Sofia were children. The frame and perspective are almost the same angle, as if they are being watched from below.
Either way, he is clearly making the choice to leave the past behind that brings him to his tragic and senseless death.
I would love to know what happened that took that gentle young Joe who loved to sing and turned him into the tortured stoic we meet in Goncharov, the only affection reserved for his cat, Mrs. Claws.
(I can't help but wonder if they meant for her to be an echo of Le Befana, the Italian winter witch-goddess who sometimes gets translated as Mrs. Claus? After all, his mama's last words to him when she kissed him goodbye were, "If you're a very good boy, maybe La Befana will bring you to a new home on Epiphany morning, a warm home full of food and presents." Poor Joe never finds that home.) You know, I think that was the first time I heard about Le Befana, and that was one of the inspirations that led me down the road to my own version of Mother Christmas.
Does anyone know if it's true that the Ice-Pick Joe prequel got permission to use "Hotel California" as its theme song? I wonder if we're going to get the story of his time as an unskilled laborer in the vineyards of Napa in the 60s? I was never clear about how he got to America and then back to Italy with a small fortune and hitman skills? They're saying it's like Better Call Saul meets the Sopranos meets Twin Peaks. I'm here for it, especially if they can get Cole Sprouse to play young Ice-Pick Joe.

The way that if you play “The Bridge” and “The Clocktower” at the same time, they seem to echo back at each other like they’re conversing?? I got chills

So it turns out they recorded an extended version of the music from the farewell scene! They had to cut it from the movie, but it’s still on the soundtrack!
ok but one thing i love about goncharov is the ironic subversion of themes. like we have katya, the madonna-like character whose white palette screams of loyalty and purity, while andrey is the judas-like character whose motifs are the dagger and the poisoned cup.
but at the end, it’s katya who draws a gun on goncharov, and andrey who’s left holding his bleeding body in his arms. by having the “loyal wife” be the backstabber and the “doublecrosser” be the broken-hearted lover, scorsese subverts both biblical imagery and gender roles, and he does it in such a subtle and poetic way too, without taking away the complexity of either character.

Nope
“Nope” wants to have a message that’s present in every character, but also doesn’t want it to be overtly explicit, causing the themes to get lost within characters motivated by outside influence.
OJ Haywood has just gruesomely lost his father in what authorities claim was debris from a plane in the sky. He has also lost a job opportunity for one of his horses to star in a commercial after the film crew irresponsibly fails to respect its boundaries. Now, OJ must sell his horses to a nearby amusement park owner named Ricky “Jupe” Park, who was also a child actor back in the day. While contemplating with his sister about selling the whole ranch to Jupe, OJ notices that one of their horses is acting weird. When he goes to investigate, he sees what looks to be a UFO.
I know that the opening statement for this review looks like a bunch of word vomit, but trust me, it makes sense. Jordan Peele is a director whom I respect immensely. I’ve mentioned that I used to watch “Mad TV” on YouTube with my brother back when I was in elementary school and watched “Key & Peele” in middle school. Seeing Peele’s transition from comedy to horror was amazing because he just does both so well. “Get Out” and “Us” were great movies first and great message movies second. “Nope” feels like it’s trying to be a message movie, but fails to try and make the movie great. When themes like racial microaggressions and social mobility are exhausted in his other works, he’s left with passively scary themes such as desensitization to spectacle. All the characters in “Nope” operate under this theme, but it’s hard to pick up on because the theme itself is so vague. This leads to characters feeling unrealistic because their choices are dictated by this adherence to the theme rather than logic. OJ and Emerald learn about the existence of a UFO and their initial reaction is to catch it on film to become rich. OJ knows good and well that this UFO violently murdered his father right in front of him. I don’t think he’d be too eager to profit off of this UFO. If anything, he’d probably want to report this to the authorities out of anger. In fact, he’s not even angry at this UFO because the character is so muted. Steven Yeun’s character also adheres to this theme in a weird way. He went through a traumatic incident in his childhood, and that’s putting it mildly. Instead of being scarred by it and needing therapy for the rest of his life, he idolizes and monetizes his tragedy. I know some people will try to justify these characters’ actions and tell me that’s exactly what Jordan Peele is trying to point out. The truly scary part is that there are people like this out there. The problem is, that’s a gross oversimplification of what’s really going on, which in turn leads to my dissatisfaction of how the characters were portrayed. This is mostly apparent with the TMZ reporter. The dude gets seriously injured and all he cares about is getting it on video. Same with Antlers Hoist with suddenly wanting the perfect shot. Putting the theme aside, I think there were elements that made the movie itself decent. I thought borrowing elements from “Jaws”, but putting it into the sky was a lot of fun. The sky is everywhere so you can’t escape the monster’s grasp. However, on the flipside to that, the sky is more open than the ocean, so you don’t get the fear of the obscured monster as much. I mean, the movie does it with clouds, but the sky can also be crystal clear. The twist with the UFO didn’t really work for me. Part of the fun of alien invasion movies is finding out about the motivations of the aliens. Finding out that the UFO is the monster boils the motivation down to “it’s hungry”. It sucks too since I thought the scene with the kids dressed as aliens was the best scene in the whole movie. Before it’s revealed that it was just a prank, it was a genuine “Oh shit” moment that had me even saying “nope” repeatedly. Also, I know Jordan Peele didn’t have anything to do with the trailers for this movie, but they were misleading at best and downright insensitive at worst. There’s a shot of a weird looking man walking towards something the crowd is running away from. That shot is not in the movie at all. Then, you have the disfigured lady from the trailer. The trailer leads you to believe that she’s part of the horror of this movie, but it turns out she’s a sweet lady who was horribly maimed. It’s a little insensitive to weaponize that imagery to sell a horror movie, but that’s just what I think. All in all, I think this was a step down from what we’re normally used to from Jordan Peele, but still admirable for being something new. Ultimately, that’s what I want from directors and that’s why I respect Jordan Peele so much.

I aboslutly agree with you by casting steven as ricky it adds a more tragic twist to the star lasso experience scene,if it had been jesse plemmons i would have been less sympathetic but with steven i felt bad for him
steven could have played it menacing, he played menacing in burning and it was fantastic and a little hot. but instead i just saw like a lost child in adult jupe, someone just getting by in an industry that clearly never valued him as a person by literally putting him on the same entertainment level as a chimp or having him be the "asian kid" which i know from experience with the walking dead fandom or the years of people thinking steven is ke huy quan (i'm so serious)..... probably hits close to home for steven as an actor. and now he thinks he's gained an upper hand using the horses to feed his metaphorical chimp but just like with gordy, the balloons pop eventually. but i was thinking also about how jupiter's claim will become a spectacle again once the dust settles and jupe will have gone from child star to animal attack survivor to amusement park face to jean jacket victim to unsolved mysterious mass disappearance it literally never ends

This scene is honestly adorable, and made me think of how unique Clarimonde is for a vampire character from this era in that she actually has a sense of humor.
By my count, Lord Ruthven laughs exactly three times over the course of The Vampyre: When Aubrey asks if he has any intention of marrying the woman he plans to seduce, when he’s killing Ianthe, and when he gets Aubrey to agree to The Oath™. It’s always ominous, malicious, or both, and it’s invariably in a situation where he’s enjoying hurting someone or having power over them. It’s never in a scenario where the audience would be laughing along with him, at something we’d find funny or endearing too. And that’s what you mostly tend to find in early literary vampires: even the more sympathetic ones (like E.T.A. Hoffmann’s Aurelia) are mostly just serious and brooding, without much by way of humor.
By contrast, Clarimonde bursting out laughing because her sheltered dork boyfriend has no idea how fancy clothes work is… dare I say it, refreshingly human. There’s nothing malicious or malevolent in it, it doesn’t seem like she’s, idk, gloating in her power over him or something, she genuinely just seems to be giggling over him being an awkward dork. The same goes for the way she teases Romuald: It’s genuinely cute, and there’s a humanity and mutuality there that’s completely absent in a lot of early vampire/human dynamics (and later ones too - compare it to how Dracula’s Brides talk over Jonathan but never to him, for example).
That doesn’t mean there’s no sense of foreboding to the story or to Clarimonde, I just think it’s an aspect that brings more complexity to the picture, and to this relationship.

*sobbing* no bc you don’t understand Abuela is not a villain she’s traumatized she literally had to leave everything behind and watched people, including her own husband, die and then all of a sudden she got this miracle that literally moved the earth to create a safe haven for her so OF COURSE when she sees that the magic is in trouble she has trouble dealing with it because that’s been her stability for so long and OF COURSE when she sees it REALLY starting to weaken she freaks out and starts snapping at people because for all she knew, if they lost their magic, they could lose EVERYTHING again. The miracle LITERALLY created the mountains around their encanto, for all she knew, if the magic ran out, the mountains could have crushed them all or they would have disappeared back into the earth, it would leave them vulnerable again, and OF COURSE she still loves her family and Mirabel but of course she snaps at her bc she’s scared and doesn’t know what’s going on but she knows Mirabel is connected to it somehow and whatever it is was so bad her son LEFT and OF COURSE she pushes her family so hard to help the community because she has survivor’s guilt bc she wasn’t the only one who lost her home or her loved ones but she was the one who got the miracle so of course she feels like she has to earn it somehow and OF COURSE she doesn’t know how to help her children with their mental health bc she doesn’t know how to handle it, let alone handle her own, and it’s just so devastatingly HUMAN and I just- *ugly cries*
