What is bipolar disorder? PART II

Hypomania

Hypomania is a mood episode that mostly people with type II bipolar disorder experience (but people with type I can experience it too) similar to mania. The difference between mania and hypomania is that in hypomania, the individual does not require hospitalization and there are never any psychotic features present. Individuals in a hypomanic episode typically experience:

 Increase in energy

 Decreased sleep

 Pressured speech

 Increase in goal-oriented activity

 Irritability

 Elevated mood

 Psychomotor agitation

 Grandiosity

 Disinhibition and focus on instant gratification that can result in spending sprees or risky sexual behaviour

It is important to note that these changes in mood and behaviour are enough to draw the attention of others, especially family and friends.  It is important that you have a friend or family member that can act as your “life guard”….someone to tell you when they notice these behaviours, and someone who you trust enough to take their word on it.

Mixed Episode

A mood episode that includes features of mania/hypomania and depression simultaneously.

Diagnostic Criteria for the Diagnosis of Bipolar Disorder

Type I: One or more manic episodes.  A depressive or hypomanic episode is not required for diagnosis, but it frequently occurs.

Type II: One or more hypomanic episodes and one or more major depressive episodes.

Cyclothymia:  History of hypomanic episodes with periods of depression that do not meet criteria for major depressive episodes.  Low-grade cycling of mood which appears to the observer as a personality trait, and interferes with functioning.

BD NOS (not otherwise specified): Catchall category.  Diagnosed when the disorder does not fall within a specific subtype.

Types of Cycling

Rapid cycling: Four + episodes per year.

Ultra rapid cycling: Several distinct episodes within a week

Ultra radiant cycling: multiple episodes within the same day

Taraji P.Henson Gave A Heartwarming Speech  After SAG Award Win. She Used This Moment To Appreciate

Taraji P.Henson gave a heartwarming speech  after SAG Award win. She used this moment to appreciate three women, who changed the history and sent men into space, who didn’t complain about oppression they’ve experienced and thought about solutions. She called for unity , bacause that is what this film stands for. This film is about miracles that happen when we unite.

boys with personality disorders are valid and important boys with eating disorders are valid and important boys with psychotic disorders are valid and important boys with mood disorders are valid and important boys with processing disorders and autism spectrum disorders are valid and important the media often tries to push the idea that boys can’t cry or be sensitive. in spite of that idea, boys are allowed to cry and be sensitive. neurodivergent boys matter.

One of the best examples of abled people taking it upon themselves to advocate for the disabled community while simultaneously ignoring the voices of people with disabilities until they’ve made things worse is the “new” international symbol of access.

One Of The Best Examples Of Abled People Taking It Upon Themselves To Advocate For The Disabled Community

The original, established, symbol is on the left and the “new” symbol is on the right.

So what’s the problem?

Well, the biggest problem is that the newest symbol wasn’t designed by someone in a wheelchair. It was designed by two artists who don’t use wheelchairs who thought that they could speak on behalf of people who do.

Who cares, it’s a good symbol, right?

Nope.

See the original symbol, the one that’s been around for decades and has been embraced by the disabled community, works for both people in manual wheelchairs and people in electric wheelchairs. The second one is obviously someone in a manual chair, excluding those who use electric ones.

There’s also ironically an ableist message behind their reasoning that the person on the right symbolizes an active member of society, whereas the non-moving person on the right can be depicted as lazy. This reasoning is extremely ableist and ignorant, artsy for the sake of being artsy without giving thought to what they’re actually implying.

The real kicker?

My college has the new signs everywhere. New York State as a whole adopted these new signs. A ton of different buildings around the nation are putting up these new signs because people are just sort of assuming that everyone with a disability approves, even though most people in wheelchairs are objecting to it and the people who are advocating for it aren’t in wheelchairs in the first place.

And guess whose voices are the ones being heard?

And guess whose voices are the ones being ignored?
