I really enjoy properly Regency AUs. Not polyester pastiches like Bridgerton, but more like Patrick O’Brian or Jane Austen has a lovechild with my current brainrot of choice, and it runs off to war. Finding a historical context in which characters can retain most, if not all of their particular attributes, backstories, and well, characteristics, while also respecting conventions of the period is half the fun for me. Happily, the early 19th century is such a pliable period; spending enough time with primary sources often reminds one that fact is often stranger than fiction.
All this to say, I’d love to actually write this historical adventure-romance, but in the meantime, a brief sketch of our primary characters …
English officer Simon Riley, choosing to affect his own death rather than submit to a court-martial for a crime he did not commit, deserts his unit then in the Peninsula and secrets himself aboard a convict ship then moored off the mouth of the Mersey. By much cunning and falsehood, he passes himself off as a German prisoner-of-war, Simon Geist, hiding his true identity behind the skull of the man responsible for his disgrace. Though believed to be mad, his size and martial skill see him rapidly enlisted into the infamous Black Brunswickers, then in British service. He finds himself back in Spain, where his strange success in reducing desertion among his fellow enlisted mercenaries sees him promoted to lieutenant. Nominally of the Brunswick Hussars, always mounted on his massive warmblood Bourbon, his excellent navigation and melée combat skills bring him to the attention of the British staff, who task “Ghost” with a number of dangerous missions…
John MacTavish, a sergeant of the 71st Glasgow Highland Light Infantry, enlisted young, falsifying his age, and his experience has since made him one of the best sharpshooters in the Peninsula. Among a unit known for reconnaissance and skirmishing ahead of the main line, MacTavish — nicknamed “Soap” for his ability to get out of any sticky situation — earns a reputation for disruptive actions in enemy camps. It is on his way back from leave however, aboard an American merchant ship, when a new declaration of war sees allies become enemies, and Sergeant MacTavish finds himself abandoned and on the run in the hostile Spanish town of Las Almas, as the French move in on the city. A nocturnal encounter with a familiar black ghost might be his only way out …

"Lemon Sponge? Huh... English is such a confusing language sometimes. I'll keep it in mind from now on. But thank you for... not thinking it's a waste of time."
Yoru seemed to register Ghost's attempt to smile with his voice, however he was still unable to look Ghost in the eyes.

"My father says I'm getting too soft for a man and that I should take after some true warriors... So I figured a lieutenant counts? How can I be more of a man?"
- Yoru 🌌
(I'm 18, character is 15 tho, hope it's still okay?)
(perfectly fine with me!)
"How can you be more o' a man? The fuck kinda question is tha'?"
Simon sighed.
"Lookit, kid...You wanna be more o'a man? Grow up at yer own pace. Don' let yer da' push y'round, kay? Look wha' th'fuck happen t'me cuz i let my old bastard push me 'round." he look down at the kid, putting a hand on his shoulder.
"Yer dad keeps givin' y'shit, come back. And when y'go home...tell em the Ghost said "Let the kid be a kid."
