People have written a lot of touchy-feely pieces on this subject but I thought I’d get right to the heart of the matter
Pink thing (affectionate)
Weird to act like Jin Ling's words of "he didn't ever hit me that bad or ever" are face value despite him getting slapped around in book plot in present until he falls... like that is to parallel Wei Wuxian saying "Madam Yu's abuse wasn't that bad" to then have it revealed he was whipped on a constant by her and it did in fact hurt and he was not as blasé to it as certain people make it out to be.
Almost as if... as if this is a coping mechanism of children who have grown up in volatile homes with an emotionally and or physically abusive parent who they are told to respect and love due to being an ingrained part of culture and a taboo to criticize despite said abuse being very blatant and actually uncomfortable for others to witness who know that is not how normal parenting is or should be.
And we continue to reason it's not that bad, it was a little slap, it's not that bad, it was just across the cheek it's not that bad, it didn't break skin it's not that bad, it's not that bad it only left a bruise, it's not that bad I only bled a little. It's not that bad because they love me.
After all, love is an excuse for everything no?
"Li Yu was a little hesitant, but Prince Jing was smilling as he walked up to him. He patted Li Yu on the head, pulled out a white jade hairpin shaped like a fish, and carefully put it in Li Yu's hair."
Just had a horrible, terrible thought. Have you ever tried taking a child from their mother, like to hold them or whatnot? after a certain age kids understand that taking them from their mom isn't gonna be permanent and you're not gonna kill them, but before that they cry and cling. And so it occurred to me that lwj may once had been at such age, small enough to think that being taken from his mom is the end of the world and had at least once reacted accordingly.
Think about that. Actually envision that moment happening with a tiny baby a-zhan clinging with his life to his mom when they're trying to take him away.
Now your day is as ruined as mine.

so umm I finally finished reading Thousand Autumns after 3 years, it's fully translated now so yippee!
drew this to get the pictures out of my head and maybe to get someone interested in the book and you should all look at yan wushi's gray hair and shen qiao's deer-like eyes
