Ambientato nel 1995 (l’anno del picco del Satanic Panic), l'indagine si concentra su un aberrante cold case legato a stragi familiari, riti satanici e bambole demoniache – e su un serial killer raccapricciante.

La protagonista, Maika Monroe (It Follows), è stato tenuta separata da Nicolas Cage fino al momento di girare insieme.

La Monroe ignorava che look era stato assegnato al collega per interpretare il killer: una inquietante figura eponima dal volto schiarito dal cerone.
