Eating toast for dinner instead of cooking is better than not eating anything at all.
Using mouthwash instead of brushing your teeth is better than not taking care of your teeth at all.
Wiping yourself with a damp cloth or baby wipe instead of showering is better than not bathing at all.
Doing only one out of five assignments you need to turn in is better than not submitting anything at all.
Talking to a loved one on the phone is better than not talking to anyone at all.
Playing your favorite video game, listening to good music, or reading a book instead of "grinding" is better than not doing anything at all.
Don't beat yourself up for not being "productive enough". A little productivity is still productivity.
My copium au where they get to grow up
I have seen people comment both on here and elsewhere that some PoC characters are that in name only. And have heard people say that a "black person would never say that" that hispanic girl is a reskinned white girl. I recognize that when some writers use PoC characters as mouth pieces to talk about that ethnicity, but it seems to be a more social outlook in some cases that is hard to put a finger on.
I’m here for fixyourwritinghabits’s response to the POC would/wouldn’t accusation.
X people do not all act, react, think or live the same, so you’re right to raise your brow at anyone saying “Nah, Black people don’t do so and so.” But what you will want to look at is if this claim is valid in relation to your particular character.
So let’s take talking back to one’s parents. Let me generalize and say in the Black community, this might be something that’s not gonna happen so often and there’s lots of jokes about how shocked Black people are to see how their White friends are allowed to say certain things to their parents that would get them personally in trouble with their Black parents.
Observe:
But not every Black person or family is the same. You might have a Black character who would talk back and whether drama ensues or not is up to the development you created with your characters.
It’s a strange thing to balance, achieving alleged “Authenticity” vs. avoiding stereotypes, but it can and is done when you realize that people are influenced by not just their identifies as Black, Latinx, or otherwise, but personality, social class, family lives, and so on.

whatever I'll post my addendum to it anyway
I'm guessing Miguel is responsible for watching over all the spider people and the spiderverse itself, making sure it's stable.
Lol I can only imagine Peter and Stephen fucking up the multiverse in NWH almost gave Miguel an aneurysm 🤣
would writing a character with sight in only one eye have differences from writing an abled person?
Yes. The character would experience issues with depth perception and limited visual field. They could still drive, could still have good aim, but it wouldn't come as naturally to them as someone who has both eyes to map out distance and angle.
Losing an eye is a type of amputation, and the cause/event might be traumatic or emotionally difficult to talk about. Or they might be the gallows humor type and making jokes about it left, right, and center.
Prosthetic eyes require maintenance and care the same way any mobility aid or prosthesis does. That's a step of daily care that fully sighted people will never experience.
Some people choose unusual, non-matching prosthetic eyes for fun the same way someone might choose colored contacts. Others choose not to wear a prosthetic eye.
soapghost headcanons sleep edition
ghost:
sleeps in complete darkness. has blackout curtains and unplugs/shuts off all his electronics before going to sleep. sleeps in complete silence. if you didn’t know better you’d think you were walking into a cave
hates sleeping. it makes him feel vulnerable but he also think it’s an impractical waste of time
sleeps on a twin sized mattress. curls into a ball when he sleeps
always too hot
the first time soap slept in his bed ghost got a foot lodged in his side and he ended up on the floor and got no sleep that night
light sleeper
there’s at least one knife under his pillow at all times. sometimes he hides more between the mattress and the frame
talks in his sleep
refuses to sleep around anyone else because he has trust issues. will force himself to go days without sleeping unless soap is around
locks the door to his room at the same time every night to make him feel safer
has at least two weighted blankets that he’s folded in half to make them seem heavier but they’re still not heavy enough for his liking
loves it when soap lays on him/rests his head on his chest
soap
soap sleeps with the curtains half drawn and always has something playing in the background
wears earplugs when he sleeps ?? don’t ask me to explain it’s just something he would do
s p r a w l s out as much as he can. sleeps on a king sized mattress just because he likes having the space
has led strip lights on the walls but never changes the color from red and he keeps them on the lowest setting because it’s easy on the eyes at night and he knows ghost won’t mind it
the first time ghost slept in his bed he woke up the next morning crying because he had slept really well and that scared him (trauma responses abhorred <3) and soap didn’t understand it at first and thought he had done something wrong
a literal ice cube. loves to snuggle with ghost at night to warm himself up & gets sad when ghost isn’t around to keep him warm
sometimes finds himself sleeping On Top of ghost like a baby sleeping on somebody’s chest
never knows how it ends up happening but he doesn’t complain about it ever because he loves it
wears socks in bed
one time a civvy kid brought him a little beat up raccoon stuffed animal & he sleeps with it very night (it lowkey reminds him of ghost)
keeps a stack of various books on his bedside table to read at night when he can’t sleep
soap snores so effing loud
Hi! Your blog has been a big help as I’ve been diversifying my cast of characters. I have a couple quick questions about a character who I initially envisioned as white but recently decided to make Mexican:
1) Would it be negative stereotyping to have their family be poor/have them be working to help support their family? I wanted to emphasize the pressure they feel to be an adult (with having them forced into a lot of responsibility) and intend to have their family members be well-rounded, but realize this may be a harmful portrayal. Anything in particular to avoid if I do go that road?
2) They’re bilingual (Spanish and English) but speak Spanish around the house/with family and some friends, when given a choice would it be reasonable for them to prefer reading/watching TV in Spanish over English? (Specifically, if they were watching anime that would have to be translated either way and could find a good Spanish sub, would it be reasonable for them to prefer that to an English sub?)
Thanks for all the great work you do with the blog, good luck continuing!
The fact of your Mexican character being poor is not what constitutes the potential stereotype; the execution of the character’s poverty is what constitutes the potential stereotype.
If the family is poor due to … - Having so many mouths to feed that you gotta stretch every dollar - Having an alcoholic in the family who sucks down the paychecks And/Or - Having a lazy family member who isn’t pulling their weight
Then change the reason why the family is poor because you would otherwise have needlessly touched on the stereotypes of Mexicans Bang Like Rabbits, Mexicans Are Alcoholics, and/or Mexicans Are Lazy.
You can emphasize a lot of pressure on someone to be an adult through means which are not poverty, like amping up the pressure of whatever the character has to do in the plotline to Save The Day, editing your cast of characters and making the MC take on their responsibilities. I honestly would prefer and recommend that you come up with alternative means to put pressure on your MC because seriously, when you see the same thing over and over and over again it just … It doesn’t HURT? But it doesn’t HELP either.
Everybody has preferences and this includes language preferences; I don’t see why they WOULDN’T have language preferences and them leaning towards Spanish is perfectly fine. I don’t understand why it would be a problem, honestly. What are you afraid it would suggest if you had a Mexican designating Spanish as their preferred language?

lil doodle from the other day born out of an overwhelming annoyance that for some reason body hair is associated with masculinity despite Everyone Having It. so why not draw a cute hairy girl about it
