Snape Fic Recs for the Sneptical & Snurious

I mostly run in marauders-centric circles where Snape is largely ignored or treated like an incel, and eventually it gets boring. Boring! The worst sin in fandom! He's an interesting guy and there are SO many amazing fics featuring him.

(That said, I do think that Snape, James, and Sirius would all be thrilled that their beef has continued onto the internet in 2025 and that thought delights me even as the discourse grows tedious.)

These are just a few I've enjoyed in the past couple months as someone who doesn't generally read a lot of Snape-centric fics and who has zero tolerance for Lily bashing. (Sorry this basically became a @saintsenara rec list because I've been binging)

Severus Snape, from first curse to first kill. Or: The making of a Death Eater.

The first Snape-centric fic I read in years, and it's such a good starting point for my fellow Snurious Sneptics. Snape's voice shines through -- resentful, angry, hungry, curious, brilliant -- and his relationships with so many other characters (Lily, Narcissa, his parents) are just brilliantly portrayed.

Scylla and Charybdis by Asenora (64k WIP, E, Severus/Voldemort)

Severus Snape is looking for somewhere - anywhere - to belong. He makes the wrong choice.

The political worldbuilding! The politics! The humanity! The snarky, darkly hilarious Snape voice! This is a fic where the first war really feels like a war with complex politics -- while also completely avoiding that boring trope of 'what if the DEs were right actually??' Everyone is a human, politics is about material reality, and Voldemort is awful. Snape's desire to belong is so physically palpable as you read that it's almost painful.

The War of the Roses by Asenora (51k WIP, E, Sirius/Severus)

Sirius Black does not die. But this does not mean that it is easy for him to live. Or: a butterfly flaps its wings and Sirius does not go to the Department of Mysteries. What follows from that twist of fate is a story about the long, destructive shadow of a schoolboy rivalry; a story about surviving, and how surviving is sometimes more difficult than dying; a story about the fragility of beauty, the gentleness of hope, and the value of choice. It is also a love story.

The fic that made me start binging all of Asenora's work. It's Sirius POV so perhaps a good place to start for my fellow Sirius-obsessives, and the way his experience in Azkaban both haunts him and has deep, real physical ramifications is so painful and compelling to read. Plus because he lives he gets to have a more complex relationship with Harry! Snape has very nice hands and Sirius's fantasies about him are definitely not sexual at all nope nope nope.

Sirius goes to a gay bar and meets the last person he expects. Under cloudy skies, two boys kiss and that one moment comes to define generations of want, need and hope.

Reading these fics as a teenager genuinely saved me I think. Very dark and includes a lot of Blackcest and sexual violence and written pre-DH as a heads up. I remember being so invested in this particular version of Snape, and then DH came out and promptly lost all interest in him when his backstory wasn't as interesting as the ones I read on LJ. There's a real old school feel which I can't quite put my finger on, but I definitely recommend them if you like dark and if you like fandom history.

My wife and I have a little game we play called "Speaking From Ignorance."

To play Speaking From Ignorance, all you need is a phone with a voice recorder, and another person who knows considerably more or considerably less about a topic than you do. The topic can be anything: from "how to bake a quiche" to "what happens in the Peter Jackson Hobbit movies" to "who is Florence Pugh" to "how does the traveling salesman problem work." All that matters is that one of you has a firm grasp on the material, and one of you absolutely the fuck does not.

Then the person who knows about the topic turns on the recorder, and says to the person who knows barely anything: "Hey - tell me everything you think you know about [X]."

The speaker is then not allowed to ask any questions. Nor is the expert allowed to volunteer any information. The expert is allowed to pipe up with a faintly incredulous "Oh--really? Do you--do you think so?" from time to time, but for the most part, the expert's job is just to sit there and make encouraging sounds while the speaker digs their own grave.

This is never not funny.

The reason you record it is because, very often, the first thing the speaker wants to do after finishing the recording is find out how you actually make a quiche, or whatever. Then you both get to go back and listen to how wrong they were.

We have a small library now of Speaking From Ignorance recordings, and I'm going to be listening to them until I'm eighty.

Okay, I finally saw Hamlet performed live yesterday, and let me tell you some of the production choices were *chef's kiss*

King's ghost wore a crown, but upside down,

There was an open grave on the stage the entire play, that leads to to a trapdoor stage exit. Hamlet exited the stage by falling into it no less then 5 times

Everybody was dressed in modern clothes and Hamlet wore a jacket, but as my friends cleverly pointed out to me, he only wears it when he "performs" the role of the prince. When he's alone or with Horatio, he dons it off

Speaking of Horatio, he was kinda just there for a lot of the play? He lurked in backgrounds of a lot of scenes. (Or in foregrounds. In the beginning scene with Claudius and the queen he just sat on the chair at the front of the stage and ate lunch)

When Rosencrantz and Guildenstern arrived, Hamlet has only done the jacket half way, and shook their hands with his one arm that is in the jacket

When Rosencrantz told Hamlet the actors have came with them, Hamlet's demeanor changed from snarky to completely overjoyed and he kissed him on the mouth for a full minute

When the actors for the play in the play were supposed to arrive, 20th century fox music started playing

Hamlet forces Rosencrantz and Guildenstern to pinky swear

When Ophelia was returning Hamlet's letters, she also returned a vinyl that he gave her, that he later breaks into pieces in front of her

When Polonius talks about how he used to act, he demonstrates his 'acting skills' by re-playing his death as Caesar, immensely overplaying it. Contrastingly, his own death an act later is quick and lacking fanfare. He simply utters "He killed me" and falls to the ground dead, making it his probably shortest set of lines he had in the play.

During the meta-play, a wedding cake is brought onto the stage, that the actors in the meta play use as a prop. Once the cake was discarded aside, Claudius sneakily stole a bite from it.

Claudius spat on old king's grave after his attempt at prayer

In the scene in Gertrude's chambers, Hamlet arrived shirtless and he had letters written across his torso that spelled S Y N (meaning "son" in my language, but the middle y had a dot over it, allowing it to be read as "sin" in a sort of double-language wordplay)

Also, Ophelia switched languages when she was singing her last song

The stage got progressively messier and messier with each act (mostly by the dirt from the grave)

The first gravedigger put on one hell of a singing performance

Hamlet took Yorick's skull and put it on a chair at the from on the stage, watching the audience until the very end

And the choice that rendered me speechless, that is, turning the lights completely off after "There's only silence" and have that be the last words of the play.

Im one of those people who hate canon malfoy for being a racist asshole, but i hink hes funny as a character if that makes sense? Like fuck the guy, but i think if we just dumped him in anti-fantasy racism goo and then let him sit there for a while that he would be a really funny character. I do hate how the fandom has made him all serious and mysterious, like you said. Hes such a little dramatic whiny little asshole and if you want to stan him, then you have to embrcae that part of him. The guy got rejected by some kid he met on a train and decided to hate him for the rest of enternity and suceeded. Hes a pathetic theater kid with a flair for dramatics who has two goons he constantly keeps around him at all times. Dont just overlook that, guys (the malfoy fans).

I agree! Malfoy can be a really fun character to work with especially once he can be somewhat separated from his bigotry. Not entirely, but I guess making him slightly more open minded & less extreme in his beliefs, cause it can be fun to have him be taught things too

It’s been a while since I’ve read a fic where Malfoy was really that involved but if you like Malfoy, the trio, AND the marauders the fic Marauders of the Mind is on fanfic.net and I think it’s really fun. I have some issues with it like the marauders aren’t their canon selves, they’re pretty exaggerated / ooc, but it has a lot of good Harry & Malfoy characterization I think!

Why do people who dont like Ron and Ginny automatically get accused of classicism and anti poor bigotry? I am not saying there are no people who hate Weasleys for being poor, the fandom is huge and all stripes of folks can be found here even the most despicable.

Most people I know who don't like Ron and Gin Gin also have Weasleys they do like such as : Fred, George, Percy, Bill, Arthur and Molly. (Yeah I don't get Molly bashing. She gave Harry his 1st motherly hug, loves her family and defeated Bellatrix. What's not to love? )

I personally don't like Ron, not coz he's poor and red head and all that shite. But coz he's very unremarkable, insecure, not too bright and not charismatic.

He's a good egg but have a distinct sidekick energy and not main character vibe like Harry, Hermione, Tom, Severus, Albus, Sirius, James, does.

And he's not brilliant like Percy, enterprising like the twins or cool like Bill.

He's like the characters Jonah Hill played once upon a time: Good hearted but ordinary, goofy guys.

These characters are good in comic scenes or slice of life dramas but not as the Main Male character or love interest in epic, larger than life romantic fics.

He's good. But he's not love interest material for most straight/bi women and gay/bi men.

I am sure in real life many of us would be happy to date a guy like Ron. But when it comes to reading fics, he's just not that guy you feel interested in.

He's that good, stable, nice guy your parents hope you end up with and they are right too.

But not the type of guy you fantasize about or want to read as MC or love interest.

He's too much of an every man, he reminds many of us too much of ordinary blokes we know to read him as MC or love interest.

canon klance is rly good food for miserable people (me). they both definitely loved each other at some point but there's no guarantee those timelines ever crossed. they were teenagers in the middle of an intergalactic war. almost all they knew was that they felt something towards each other, and the easiest way to deal with it was invent hatred between them. they spat in each other's faces and then turned around and uttered praise in thr softest voices imaginable. they sat in front of a sunset and talked about how much they cared for one another, and then never really spoke again. lance's first love dies and he never gets over it. who the hell knows what keith got up to. the war ends and they still don't know what to do about one another. their lines cross over and over and over again but they never stay intertwined. does anyone have a gun
