This is why canon Alhaitham is infinitely better than fanon.
I think Alhaitham's views on gods and his dynamic with Nahida in particular is probably one of the most underrated comedic elements to come out of Sumeru.
This guy put together an entire crack squad and master plan to rescue a god while being the Genshin equivalent of an atheist. "Yes, obviously archons exist. But so do sharks. Both of those beings have their place in the ecosystem, and if I had to pick one to piss off--"
Like, does he believe in the dendro archon? Yes. But is he going to listen if she denies his paid vacation request? Absolutely not.
Bro is selected by name to come discuss important matters with his nation's deity in her sanctuary, and he's just like, "Oh, I ran into Nilou there once. That was cool."
Raised to the highest possible position available in his nation's government by the deliberate selection of his god? Resigns.
We know that Nahida still calls on Alhaitham when Sumeru is in need of defending from nefarious parties, and sends him out with Wanderer to kick ass and take names. Now that they've forgotten Rukkhadevata and the Akademiya's ploy to imprison Nahida has been foiled, most of the people of Sumeru would be floored by the honor of being called upon personally to aid the great dendro archon. Staggered by the fact that the lord of wisdom herself finds them worthy! But Alhaitham? He just goes home. Kaveh asks him what he was up to all day. "Hm. Nothing of note."
Everyone else, upon receiving the recognition of a god: My life has been changed forever. I will be telling my great grandchildren of the day I received such a blessing!
But for Alhaitham? It was Tuesday.
Criminally underrated comedic potential. CRIMINAL.

Everyone talks about Kaveh’s feeling of being undeserving of happiness and should be punished for any decisions he makes due to his survivor guilt, but we should talk more about Alhaitham’s loneliness and his fear of abandonment because his life has a track record of his loved ones either dying (his immediate family) or leave him (Kaveh). There’s just way too many people thinking his stoic and rational nature somehow make him immune to emotions like loneliness, fear, or grief.

Don’t go wasting your emotion
You meet your soulmate at 15.
He’s a rough boy with bruised, bloody knuckles and a deep scratch under his eye. But he has gentle, downturned eyes that remind you of the blue of winters first frost.
He runs into you on your way home from school, crashing into you along the cobblestone path that leads you to your house, and when you get knocked backwards you feel yourself on the verge of tears from shock, but when his shaky hand comes out to help you up with a wobbly apology, you glance up at him and a sudden telltale warmth spreads from where your hands touch down to your toes. You feel your soul mark scratch at your skin and you gasp, but he only winces at the lightning prick of pain that tells him who you are to him.
He helps you up and your face warms. He looks panicked, like a cornered dog. You then spot the smattering of blood across his white school shirt. His shoes are caked with it, with dirt and scuffed from running through the mud. Your face falls and just before you can ask him if he’s okay, he tells you his name, and then pushes past you in a sprint. The scent of blood flies past your senses and you stare at his back as he gets smaller and smaller in the distance.
You don’t see him again for 15 years after that night.
Until one day you hear about the new Warden at the Fortress of Meropide, and without truly thinking - your finger curiously traces the somewhat familiar scar underneath the man’s eye on the photograph on the front page.
Your soul mark then hisses under your skin, the heat crawling up your arm and onto your tongue. Your brow pinches in confusion.
His name is unfamiliar, Wriothesley.
You only know the name of the boy who ran into you that night.
