(Neji x reader) fluff // 1.1k words

You trudged through the streets of the village stewing on the events of the day. It seemed that every small thing that could’ve gone wrong did, and on your birthday no less. Work was stressful, the weather was miserable, heavy droplets raining down from the dark sky above, and to top it all off you’d stepped in a puddle, resulting in an uncomfortably damp and squishy walk home. Finally, you reached the door of the house you shared with your boyfriend, Neji, and a potent sense of relief flooded through you as you turned the knob and stepped inside. At least after such a long day you could come home to him.

Immediately you were hit with the strong scent of burnt food, and was that a hint of vanilla you could sense underneath? A loud crash rang out from the kitchen around the corner and a low curse followed.

“Nej?” you called out curiously.

There was more fumbling and then Neji’s voice, an edge of panic to it, “Don’t come in yet! I’m not ready!” Then he continued muttering frustratedly under his breath, “Okay flour, got it… a teaspoon of salt… wait! A teaspoon?!”

Hearing the frenzied way he was dashing around in there you decided to ignore his plea and poke your head in. The messy scene you found inside was in stark contrast to the strict tidiness with which Neji usually kept your home, and to your surprised delight he matched his surroundings perfectly. He was leaning over a large metal bowl on the counter desperately trying to spoon out some of the white powder that was inside, the apron he wore covered in batter and both his face and long hair were dusted with flour.

“Need some help?” you offered with a smirk.

He whipped around, finally noticing you over his frantic baking attempts. “Why does the short form for teaspoons look so close to the one for a tablespoon?! They really should be more specific,” he huffed, brushing his hair out his face. You couldn’t help but let out a small chuckle at his frustrated state.

“I know it’s dreadful… so what’s all this?” you questioned with a curious smile, nodding towards him to indicate his messy state.

“Well…” he hesitated, looking slightly embarrassed “I wanted to make you a cake for your birthday. But as you can see,” he motioned vaguely to the scattered dishes and ingredients, “I’m a shinobi, not a baker. I burnt my first attempt and now there’s too much salt in this one!”

You cocked your head to the side and examined his bashful grin as you just stood and appreciated the thoughtful gesture for a moment. What did I do to deserve this amazing man? you thought. You had no idea, but here he was, standing before you looking so adorable and domestic in that apron you thought your heart could burst. All the stress from the day now far from your mind, a small chuckle fell over your lips and you and you gave him a quick kiss on his powdered nose.

“You’re so sweet Neji, you didn’t have to do all this.”

He scowled and protested, “It’s your birthday, (y/n), of course I did.”

You rolled your eyes and stood on your toes to give him another peck on the lips this time.

“How ‘bout we finish it together?”

His shoulders fell as he sighed with relief and the smile that you loved so much crept across his lips. “That would be great. Thank you.”

The next hour was spent baking a new cake to replace the one that Neji had burnt, a soft song playing low from the radio as he measured the ingredients metiously and handed them to you to add to the mixture. You brought a spoonful of finished batter to his lips, “How’s that?”

“Much better,” he replied with a chuckle.

Then you worked together to make quick work of the disaster zone that the kitchen had become and by the time it was back to its usual spotless appearance the oven dinged, signalling the completion of your shared baking effort.

It was still a little dry, and the icing was melting off the top because you’d put it on too soon, but even in spite of all that, that ugly little cake looked like that most delicious thing you’d ever seen.

You sat across from the man of your dreams and dug in, savouring every crumbly morsel. Halfway through your slice you looked up to notice that Neji had barely even touched his. Instead he sat with his chin propped in his hand, violet eyes trained on you like you’d just put the stars in the sky, not eagerly devoured half a piece of cake.

“You don’t have to pretend to like it, I know it’s not very good,” he urged.

You lowered your fork and gave him a sympathetic smile. “I think it’s delicious… it was made with love.”

He just chuckled and rolled his eyes at your corny line before reaching across the table to take your hand in his. “Are you sure? I can go pick you something up at Amaguriama.” He began to rise from his seat at the offer so you followed suit and stopped him with a hand on his chest.

“I’m sure honey,” you assured him firmly, “I just want to spend the night with you. The cake doesn’t matter.”

The worry that painted his features softened a bit at your words and he pulled you into his strong arms for a deep embrace that lifted you off the floor. Instinctively you wrapped your legs around his waist and he started to walk towards the bedroom.

“Hey wait! The dishes!” you laughed, pointing over his shoulder at the half eaten cakes on the table. He just shushed you and scattered a series of kisses across your face, causing you to giggle harder.

“I’ll do them tomorrow.”

Not really wanting to pull yourself from his arms to clean again you relented, letting him carry you to the bed where he laid you down gently and climbed in beside you. You could hear the rain beating down on the window pane, but from your cozy position snuggled up to the love of your life the dreary weather seemed less depressing and a little more cozy. For a while the two of you just laid there listening to the sounds of the rain and each other’s steady breathing as he held you. You barely noticed when he did, having started to doze off comfortably in his embrace, but through your drowsy half sleep you could still somewhat feel the sensation of his kiss on your forehead and hear him whisper, “I love you, (y/n). Happy birthday.”

It helps a lot, especially on nights when it's very hard for him to sleep. He especially enjoys it when you two drink a cup or two together in either of your rooms, because the next morning you'll be tangled up in eachothers arms.

And omg, lazy weekend mornings with Shinsou are the. Fucking. Best. Just a mess of kisses and cuddles and I love you's and praises and sweet nothings being shared between you two. Legit if Halo by Beyonce was personified, it would be this scene right here.
