“Silas?” He’d thought that was the shopkeep who’d passed him earlier, he’d been too busy reading to pay it much thought. The park wasn’t really a park, just a nice spot in public and every so often it was better than taking up space in the coffee shops. He’d tried to avoid them as of late anyways, after the whole ghost incident. Not ghosts, Eidolons, that’s what people were calling them. They were gone now, thanks to the Delphi coven, thanks to the Argos pack.

If the other had heard him, he hadn’t mustered any form of response, still was making his way to the bench and Leighton followed after him, book tucked back into the bag haphazardly slung over his shoulder. Upon closer inspection, it was no wonder Silas hadn’t paid him much mind. There was an almost vacant look to him, bags beneath his eyes. There was no sign of his usual cheery self, no sign of that almost playful friendly nature. “Si, I don’t mean to be rude, but you look like shit.” Brow furrowed, he stopped in front of the other and crossed his arms over his chest. It felt like he was scolding him, and maybe in a way, he was. But he was far more concerned than anything.

If his name was being called, Silas wasn’t fully aware of it. Completely consumed by thoughts that all linked themselves to the item he carried close to him and kept walking. He knew better than to assume that the scale would just stop holding onto his curse without some kind of intervention, but the cubi allowing someone to examine it was the furthest thing from his mind. No one else was going to touch it, that was the whole point of him continuing to take the burden on. The whole reason for it still being heavy inside his pocket, the chill of the bench sending shivers up his spine as he took a seat. It wasn’t until then that Silas noticed the creased expression on his friends face and that the incubus was anything but alone. A daze had taken him, charcoal hues showing no signs of cylinders firing and Silas blinked a few times while Leighton’s words sunk in. ‘You look like shit,’ echoed in his brain and all the cubi could do was nod in agreement. He knew he did. “Not rude in the slightest. I do look like shit, don’t I,” words came out slow, as if each one was difficult to pronounce and for a moment he had to make sure they weren’t in Korean, “Haven’t been sleeping very well.” As if that wasn’t apparent, but going into it much further than that didn’t seem right when he hadn’t been asked. Last thing he wanted was to distress the vampire anymore than he already looked.

“A familiar face,” the cubi stated as he gently removed his mask to reveal a smile as he came up to the couple. Over his time working with the werewolf on displaying her custom pieces, Silas had heard many lovely things about Nora’s wife and just hadn’t had the chance to meet her. His current state of fatigue was hardly the first impression he wanted to give, but from what he understood of the witch— there was probably no reason to worry over it. Eye bags on full display after another night of unrest, yet the scale was still firmly placed inside his pant pocket. Pulling out a hand to shake, the cubi gave a warm grin and spoke loudly over the crowds, “Seen any fun booths?”

“A Familiar Face,” The Cubi Stated As He Gently Removed His Mask To Reveal A Smile As He Came Up

“The roommate would be the one to ask. She still won’t answer my texts after I last asked her about displaying everything. The moment she breaks, I’ll call you.” He was still being playful, but he was honest about it. He’d seen Silas’ craft, knew the man had an eye for detail. In a strange way, it was something he was almost jealous of. Studying, memorization, that kind of thing came easier to him than any kind of art. With all the time in the world, he’d tried putting his hands to good use to create something, but it was never anything particularly special. Mimicking a tutorial wasn’t really the same as designing and crafting something completely. Tilting his head slightly and leaning forward just enough to squint at some small figure on a shelf, he looked back to Silas. “Where do you find all of this anyways?” Every so often there was something that looked vaguely familiar, like something he’d seen in passing in a far off place that he couldn’t quite…Place for himself.

Silas allowed the topic to die, knowing the complications that came with being plunged into the supernatural world. Instead he focused on the following question— picking and choosing all the items featured in his shop. “Here and there,” the cubi started, looking around the shop a little just to re-familiarize himself with their found locations. Since the transition, Silas had little fear of what he might find behind closed doors and hidden crannies. This often meant rummaging in locations that were breaking down or sheds that hadn’t been cleaned in over a decade. His travels over the years had also helped. Each piece within the shop was not just from the Mediterranean area, but from areas in Germany, France, and some from back home in Korea. Though it did get a bit ridiculous at times when he would have to suddenly move, having to find storage for many of his pieces. “Estates, attics, large shops that are filled to the brim with antiques,” he continued with an air of wonder in his voice, “Some on the side of roads that I re-purposed for a better life. All have probably lived a really unique life that began long before I set eyes on it.”

Zeus, Thetis, Demeter

Zeus: What thing are you most hypocritical of?Myself, honestly. Even after these sixty plus years, I haven’t completely let rest to the fact that my gods will no longer accept me. It isn’t until the overwhelming hunger sets in that I actually go to feed that I’m reminded again, playing it off as though my own survival is necessary. Other lives seem so much more important to me until I cannot take it anymore.

Thetis: What’s the most you’ve ever done for your loved ones? Before and even after the change I’ve done a lot for my family. I suppose it’s difficult to compare one moment to the next, but my time of being a War Artist really was a huge sacrifice. I sent my time away from them, constantly wondering if they were still safe at my Aunt’s inn. I would go back home to give them money and then be right back to traveling the next day, it was— it was a very difficult time for all of us.

Demeter: What would you most grieve for if it was taken from you?I’ve already had it all taken, so there is not much I would grieve for any longer. I still grieve for my family, for my sister, which have all been taken from me.

Do you like what you are?

Silas: Like is a very strong word. Accepted is probably the more accurate way of saying it and I don’t think I would go as far as saying I hate what I am either. I have become something for a reason, even if it was completely out of ignorance and eventually I will understand the depth of it all.

“Would you believe me if I said that’s precisely what I wanted to hear today?” He plays coy with the true reason behind his visit for only a moment longer before settling into natural charm, slightly disconcerted that the other man held a vastly greater allure without actually trying. “White, medium sized, and in an ornate metal holder. The wax has an intricate carving on one side. Does any of that sound familiar?” Fingers brushed at the crux of his neck, an uncharacteristic turmoil overtaking in that moment. As much as Giovanni intended to use Silas for his own knowledge, there came something rather striking about the other man and almost… trustworthy. The sensation struck him as both odd and comforting in the same breath. “If someone wished to pawn it, I thought you might be their first stop.”

image

Of course it sounded familiar, though Silas was having a hard time actually allowing those words to come out of his mouth. He hadn’t had the chance to really look into it, seeing as it had only been a few days of it being in his possession, and the idea of simply handing it over to Giovanni without a second thought seemed foolish. The incubus knew better than that. Trust was something that came later, with time, and the man that stood before him hadn’t been granted that level as far as Silas was concerned. Stalling, however, wasn’t exactly possible at this moment. What did the cubi care anyway? He had already had his fill of dabbling with cursed objects and the goal had to be who was going to be his highest bidder, “Yeah I’ve got a couple that might fit that description in the back— hadn’t gotten around to placing them out on display yet. Just let me bring them up.”

She watched him move a step ladder to pick the masks from the wall, bending over them once he placed them both down in front of her. “That sounds great,” she said, though she was a bit distracted by the masks. Kiera wasn’t necessarily the best person at making decisions, and it showed again in this moment. After another moment of hesitation, she picked one of the masks up and held it in front of her face. “Do you think she’ll like this more–”, she switched it out for the other, “or this one?”

Both had their own unique style and Silas could see how the young woman was having difficulty choosing. One was dramatic, bright, and seemed to have a lot of personality. While the other was calmer, cooler in coloring, but gave off a ethereal feel. The cubi turned his head slightly as she head each mask up and tried to gauge which one was a better fit. “Tell me a little more about her?” he eventually asked, not wanting to make the wrong choice when it came to a gift, “That might help.”

Ophelia watches in amusement as the incubus tries, and fails, to hit his target. She wonders if it was on purpose, if maybe he finds more value in hiding his strengths than showing them off; a move to make her underestimate him. Or maybe she’s making chess out of checkers, and he just truly has bad aim. Still, she finds it better to be overly cautious than overly trusting, especially when dealing with a creature whose true nature remains unknown to her. Everything he shows her could just be a precalculated move. “I think you sell yourself short too much. I’m certain there’s a game around here somewhere in which you would excel.” She grins as she speaks, and picks up the next dart from the counter, before taking her aim and letting it soar with a flick of her wrist. Not a bullseye, but close, only off from the red center by an inch or so. Let him make of that what he will, she thinks, as she turns back to face Silas. “I believe this means I’ve won this time. Unless you’d like to go best out of three.”

image

“I’m up for the challenge,” he states, even if his more pacifist nature showed no real desire to continue playing any of the games. None of them were his speed, but the incubus’s curiosity for Ophelia outweighed the inclination to find something else to do with his time. Not to mention Silas didn’t know what else he would fill his time with anyway. Maybe find Rimona again, see what trouble she may have found while he was away, but his feet stayed planted in the dirt. “There’s got to be something else we can try out,” charcoal irises scanning the location they were in as if there would be much more than this. After all, it was Pride and carnival games weren’t as prominent. “That booth looks like it might have a kind of game, maybe trivia?” he peered around the crowds of people that started to gather, “Want to go check it out?”

Gabriel waited not so patiently for Silas to hold good on his promise. And as soon as the other incubus exited the store, Gabriel was beside him in a second, “Fucking finally. Now come on. You distract the barista. She’s cute, kinda young for you though. She goes to the college down the road a bit. Don’t get any ideas,” he put his arm around Silas’ shoulders, steering him towards Tranquilitea first. “Then…when I get all their packaged teas, we’ll go to the other one. Switch it up, and watch the madness ensue.”

image

Eyebrows furrowed slightly at the idea of getting ideas when it came to a college student. If anything, she would accidentally become his meal at any given local bar but the cubi often tried to make sure they weren’t too local. The last thing he needed was for someone to remember his face vividly and want to keep any kind of relation going. “Is that really all we are doing?” a laugh fell from his lips before locking up the shop and walking with the fellow cubi, “Just mixing up tea and watching barista’s swear they made that person a chai latte?”
