Drunk Humans Were Always Effortless. Especially Late In A Town With Tourists Around Every Corner, Unfamiliar

Drunk humans were always effortless. Especially late in a town with tourists around every corner, unfamiliar with their surroundings and all too trusting. And Silas was starving. After almost a week of not feeding, the cubi would have tried for just about anyone but this at least took less energy. Which, if he was being honest, didn’t have much to spare. The trek just to get to Styx felt like decades and each group of foreigners had him salivating. With a quick slip, Silas could cause one of them to stagger far away enough from their friends that they wouldn’t have noticed for blocks. That could give him plenty of time, but his feet kept hitting the pavement forward.

A small line still hung outside of the club, one of which Silas knew he would never have to wait in and couldn’t help a snicker. He gave the bouncer a gentle nod before bypassing the threshold into the booming melodies. A regular at his shop, his wife had requested a custom bookshelf not even a year back and the access had helped Silas immensely. Strokes of red and purple added an aura to the cubi that in daylight, he frankly didn’t possess. Maybe it also had something to do with the hunger and he quickly found himself perched at the bar top, scanning the crowd before requesting a cocktail. It was a simple cover, but that was all it took for most humans to think he was simply one of them.

Hadn’t Silas felt that before? That encroaching, hair-raising feeling that had once started in a tiny shop in Andong. One that the incubus had not recognized then, but oh he’d wished he would have realized was the start of this long, immortal journey. Pandemonium. Why Seokga’s grasp was so firm on Korea during those days of tyranny and war, what all of this had done to his family and friends who would never understand that they had never done anything wrong besides exist. So as the sensation grew stronger— bell chiming at the door of Knick Knack, surpassing the portions in Silas that still felt agony about those days began to bubble up. “How-” even if he knew exactly what to say, the words hardly wanted to leave his throat anyway and only moved his onyx hues to capture the moment. The individual that stood before him held different features, sun-kissed skin that didn’t quite match his tempestuous gaze, though the incubus knew deep down was connected to him.

Diana’s quest had been a success. That’s what her mother, Anastasia had told her, that’s what the coven celebrated. They did not count the lives that were lost, just the threat that had been subdued before it could ever reach the shores of Corinth Bay. A man who would have stood against the Delphi, quelled by the eldest heir of Vidalis. That was what the coven saw, not the brother that Diana had slain, he was a man she’d never known, yet had been somehow connected to him all her life. It was a surreal feeling to find herself back in Corinth Bay, two years had passed but Diana could scarcely consider herself the woman that she had been before she left.

Before Diana had left she’d attempted to help Silas track down his own sister, before Diana had boarded her vessel and took off in search of the brother of her own. Whatever forces obscured her magic were evident of someone who did not want to be found, but Diana had been able to tell Silas that his sister, Ri, was in Greece, at least. She’d told him then that supernaturals were drawn to Corinth Bay, and if he was patient, she was certain that the two of them would find each other again.

Diana stepped foot into his shop and was impressed with the life that Silas had established for himself, but she wasn’t here as a patron, more as an old friend. “Silas,” Diana greeted, a smile drew across her lips as her grey eyes met that of the incubus, she’d never had reason to fear them. Kasandra and Gabriel both were friends of the Delphi, and Diana knew well what it meant to merely be trying to survive this world. At least now she did. She wanted to embrace him, but it had been years now. “I thought maybe your sister would be here with you by now, I guess that red string is a long one.”

The work had been more than exhausting over all these years, but there wasn’t an inch in Silas that would say his sister wasn’t worth it. Many had tried and failed, depleting every option that they could which only lead him so far. At the time, the Japanese government was ruthless and tried to divert eyes away from their wicked intentions. But even throughout them trying to destroy all evidence of this, pieces still remained and stories got passed down. The main issue was tracing certain things back directly to Ri-na and even with the help of outside mystics, it was difficult to find exacts on where she was or ended up. While his heart continued to tell him that she was out there alive, somewhere as something, hope was difficult to keep attached to it when the traces of her seemed to keep running cold.

He pinned it on her ability to cover her tracks— permanent death was not an option in his mind. They had always been linked together and if he was still some form of alive, then she was too. He knew that deep down in his bones. That’s why he sought out Atlas Rose, why he asked for help from Diana Vidalis. Rumored to be some of the most powerful witches and part of an elite coven, all qualities that Silas couldn’t pass up when it came to requesting aid in his search. The Vidalis coven had more than delivered, able to guide him towards confirmation and information about her existence in Greece. Maybe that’s why he also had a calling for the bay during his travels throughout the European countries. Ri-na had to have felt the same calling without being aware of the reasons why.

Bell ringing lightly from the front of the shop, the incubus emerged from the back room to find the familiar face of Diana and gave her a homely expression. “Diana, it’s so good to see you again,” a truly genuine tone as he approached the counter, “Rumor is that she is in Corinth proper now, should be soon. It’s still a mystery what all she has been through and it’s really no wonder it took so long for me to even piece this much together.” Maybe he could get assistance on another tracking spell, a powerful one that could be localized, but Silas was still learning what all witches were actually capable of and felt a bit foolish asking.

Gabriel had idly wondered how Silas had fared during the entire ordeal, though the other incubus had drifted from his mind after their argument. He’d told himself that he didn’t need to take care of the other cubi in the city, not when he had his own issues to deal with – and with the exception of Kasandra. Fran, Silas, and Chris were going to have to just deal. Though that didn’t mean he didn’t care, it was just difficult for him to maintain any kind of balance in his personal life.

The sound of Silas’ voice only made him frown, the usual joy he felt seeing the other somewhat tampered by their last conversation. Setting the book down, he looked at his friend, “Being one of the only librarians here, I can take a break whenever I want.” He flipped the little sign around on the desk to say “on break,” looking at the other incubus expectantly. “Do you need something?”

Being ruthless and unfeeling was never in Silas’s dna. Even after all these years, along with the transition into an incubus, it was hard for him to altogether let go of the person he was in the past. He felt that now more than ever as the guilt was more prominent than before, charcoal irises locking onto Gabriel’s solemn expression, and gave him an empathetic look in return. Gabe wasn’t the one that had lied or acted out of his usual ways, Silas had. Now that the Kyun was mostly back to himself, bags still present under his eyes even with all the sleep, it was easy for him to stick with the path of patience. “I just want to apologize for the way I acted and treated you,” the words came out smooth and heartfelt. It wasn’t hard for him to admit when he had behaved in the wrong fashion, to confront the issue and take accountability, “A friend should never be treated so poorly.” Silas allowed the silence to take over from there, not wanting to add more onto what should be simple. He had overstepped his boundaries once and it was now in Gabriel’s hands to either forgive or keep their divide. How things had been since the two parted ways was hardly any of the fellow cubi’s concern and the destruction of the scale was information he would only give if asked.

“#” to leighton pls

Silas: Do you by chance know anything about bats? — five minutes later — Silas: Not because of you being a vampire or anything. Just because I have a little family of them living in my attic and could use some advice.

@ — noraSilas: WOOO. Not sure how I did it, but just about cut my finger off with the jigsaw on that custom wall art. Silas: This is probably the last time I do something as intricate as a paisley design.

% — noraSilas: Think you could come by the shop today? I have a few commissions that have been requested for you and a few of your rings sold over the weekend. I’ll be in the shop until 8pm or later, so anytime works for me.Silas: Oh, and feel free to bring in more products to replace those that were sold. Everyone is loving your work.

Same set up, different event. That didn’t mean the thrill of it all wasn’t plastered on Silas’s face. He loved shifting between bodies in the crowd, snapping photographs or jotting down highlights of moments as the incubus observed others having the time of their lives. This was normal, keeping tabs on history as it happened before his eyes. Being present without being openly involved, the only way Silas really knew how to exist. Long before the change he did much of the same, weaving in and out of sight during times of war in order to document the terrors he was seeing. While this was more of a celebration, it was forever going to be a habit and the repetitiveness of it never bothered him. “Do you mind?” he asked sincerely as he approached a man sporting a devious grin, displaying his camera to see if he was alright with being photographed. It was better to ask then find himself getting scrutinized like some had tried in the past, “You just seem to really be enjoying yourself.”

“Okay.” Her eyes looked down at the blue tinted one once more, and when he posed his question, she realized that he was right. It was the one her aunt would probably never pick for herself, and therefore the perfect gift. “You’re right, she wouldn’t. That’s a great idea. I’ll take the blue one then. Do you possibly have a box it can fit in as well?”

image

Gentle head nods fell from the cubi as he pulled the mask towards himself. Silas was sure he had the right gift wrap for this particular style, getting out two sleek black boxes. One had a gold tint in the writing, embossed with the words ‘with love’ in the center. The other was similar with silver instead of the gold, but held no words and displayed an abstract geometric pattern. “Take your pick and I’ll hand wrap it for you,” warm words fell from his lips, happy that the mask was going to go into a wonderful home.

“Really? In this day an’ age?” He couldn’t find it in himself to be anything but a little intrigued. An artisan in Greece of all places, how….Strangely romantic? Jamie wasn’t quite sure if that was the right way to phrase it. Or if he even cared about it. However he did know he liked a man who worked with his hands in general, was a telltale sign they knew how to use them.

Down boy.

There wasn’t really a smell to him, which didn’t mean he wasn’t just a human, Jamie knew better by now. Still, woodworking felt like such a lost art, something he didn’t see too often anymore. If he’d have been in a mood to dwell on his past, he’d maybe have thought back to seeing his father whittle something out of an oak branch while they attended the stables at the estate. But he wasn’t too keen on that anymore, would tolerate a flash here and there, but that was it. “Ye a local then? Or sell those wares fae place tae place?”

image

A gentle head nod at the question as the bartender brought Silas his drink, placing it on a black coaster not too far from his hand. He moved to grip it, a tinge of butterflies throughout his insides as the man placed interest in his occupation, bringing the cocktail to his lips in hopes that it would relieve his own tension. It wasn’t often that he was interested in another without it being his dinner and the cubi’s obsidian hues lit up faintly at discussing his work.

“Local now,” he stated after clearing his throat, liquor burning its way down his esophagus as it planted into his empty stomach and felt the warmth take him, “Just a few years, shop on the main street. Though I have done some place to place,” the accent was still a bit rough on the cubi’s ears, but he could place enough to get the message. Silas honestly couldn’t even fully place it, just knowing the brunette had to be from some United Kingdom attached area— right? “Bit difficult to manage,” he spoke over the sudden change in music, club seeming to get louder as they sat inches apart at the bar-top.
