“You’re doing amazing, Jihoon.” you praise the little boy, patting the top of his head as you glance at his coloring book. The coloring is a little bit off, actually a lot, but you can’t really tell him that, can you? He seems to be encouraged by your praise, your heart beaming when he looks up at you and gives you a grin, his two front teeth missing.

You praise other kids at the table, somehow content how silent the room is. Well, apart from the occasional squeals, laughs and toys crashing down the floor every few seconds, but that’s just something you got used to very quickly. Now it’s just a noise you can listen to without having the need to go somewhere quiet. However, headaches make an occasional appearance once you get back home, the place empty from all the kids noises and their presence. You can’t say you hate it though, you actually miss them a lot.

You wouldn’t do this job if you didn’t like kids. And these particular amazing and cute kids that you get to see five days a week somehow sneaked their way into your heart, so you easily have grown attached to them. You could not see them for one week and feel like they’ve grown too quickly. Not for nothing people say you can see the real time passing by on kids. It’s true.

When people first found out that you and Jungkook were friends, you received a very predictable, repetitive sequence of reactions.

First came disbelief. It was the most comprehensible one, at least from your perspective, taking into consideration that you and Jungkook were completely different people. He was loud (sometimes too loud) and outgoing, probably knew at least ninety percent of the campus population by name and city of origin. Jungkook was warm, friendly, the type of guy that you’d confess all your worries to if given enough time. You, on the other hand, was more on the “colder” side — you weren’t as inviting with strangers, and didn’t mind going through moments of awkward silence. Jungkook was a talker and you were a listener; he was a daydreamer and you were a brute realist: maybe that was why your friendship worked so well. But most people couldn’t really get it.

Second came the questions — the doubts, the sideway glances, even a few bitter comments if you were unlucky enough. Jungkook had kind of a reputation when it came to sleeping around, so most people jumped to the conclusion that either you were his favorite plaything (which might have been the most offensive thing you’ve ever heard) or that you were simply the rare one he had friendzoned because he didn’t want to fuck you (a big runner-up to that prize). Eventually, though, you settled their anguishes simply by saying that you knew each other ever since you were kids.

Which took you to the final phase: relief and acceptance. The ones who saw you as a threat instantly relaxed, and the ones who couldn’t understand why he would “waste his time” with “someone like you” quickly understood that it was a deep, innocent connection that he was just “too sweet to let go.” Obviously, that didn’t make you feel any better.

Truth was, it was kind of hard being friends with Jungkook. Mostly because the boy casted a light so strong that it was almost impossible not to stay in his shadow, but also because you always felt like you had to justify your existence every time he chose you instead of anyone else. You were the person he ran to hug once his team won; you were the one he ditched other people for, just to hang out with you. It made you insecure. And, yeah, there was also the fact that you had been madly in love with him for some time now, but that was unimportant.

Well, until he asked you to be his (fake) girlfriend, that was.

you’re perhaps one drink away from considering punching the man that’s been nonstop pulling stupid pink up lines at you and unappreciatively being touchy for the last 20 minutes. you don’t even know why you managed to make him stay that long—you think it’s because you’re relatively drunk already, thus rendering you as a little weak and tired to throw him off; plus, you’re friend who’s usually feistier than you is off grinding with a handsome stranger in the middle of the dance floor, oblivious to your uncomfortable situation at the moment.

“baby, i’m sorry for taking too long,” an unfamiliar voice says right beside you and you naturally glance to where it came from, your eyes falling on a cute stranger who’s now looking at the guy in front of you two. “who’s this?”

you’re still staring at him, your mind shifting gears in what could be the best response to this. for starters though, the more you’re gazing at him, the more you’re realizing that he isn’t just cute—he’s hot, and completely sober for that matter, as the fresh smell of cologne and the inside of a vehicle fills your nose as he stands near.

“i have no idea,” you say with a chuckle. the hot stranger glances at you then and you take note of his pretty eyes.

“and who are you?” the other guy—the weirdo—intervenes.

“do you even have to ask that?” mr. hottie laughs. “i’m her boyfriend. she’s with me.”

you can’t help but smile, the butterflies in your tummy going haywire at his deep voice and his swoon worthy statement. you like the confidence flowing from his stance, the slight authority in his tone—though the thing you most liked about him is that he isn’t acting like a creep himself. you have a fair share of guys doing this ‘pretending to be the boyfriend to save the pretty girl’ thing on you for a couple of times in the past, and yet this hottie right here seems to be the most… respectful.

he’s standing close to you for a convincing show, an arm outstretched behind you but it isn’t peculiarly perched around your bare shoulders. instead his hand is leaning on the bar counter by your side, giving the illusion that he was holding your waist to the person in front, and the thought of that little friendly gesture of his was causing you to be attracted to him as more seconds pass.

the weirdo scoffs in defeat, taking his drink and rolling his eyes before he stumblingly walks away, perhaps trying to find a new girl to annoy. while he does that, you go look back at your ‘boyfriend’ and he casually leans away from you, granting you the right personal space.

“you good?” he asks.

“what’s your name?” you get straight to the point, a thing that he laughs at.

he strides to the previous spot of the perv and sits on the stool. “jeongguk.”

“thanks, jeongguk.” you smile, raising your hand towards him. “i’m ____.”

jeongguk snickers again, this time at the formality of your actions and the slight slur of your words, nonetheless shaking your hand. “nice to meet you.”

“pleasure is all mine.” you both let go, jeongguk still staring at you while you turn to your half-empty glass of liquor, downing the last drops.

as you finish it, he calls the bartender. “can i buy you another drink? or are you too buzzed for that?” he jokes.

you smile. “i can go for one more. and besides,” your smile transforms into something like a smirk as you tilt your head at him, “i’m sure you’ll be here to take care of me, baby.”

jeongguk grins, nodding, understanding, and orders two drinks for you and him, not once daring to stray his eyes from yours as he does so.

You take a deep breath as you squeeze your way into the train carriage. It is so packed, you don’t even have to hold on to anything once the train starts moving; you and your fellow commuters keep each other standing upright. You always go to work earlier to avoid the morning rush hour, however it is your own fault for pressing snooze one time too many this time.

You gasp as the train jerks and instinctively your hand reaches out to grab onto something, only to be jostled around by the other passengers. You are losing your balance and falling backwards, only for your back to hit something hard.
