Current reading routine to prevent burnout

I have this terrible habit of becoming very motivated to read but I quickly become overwhelmed with choice and indecisiveness, or I get bored with the book I'm currently reading but don't want to start a second book in the middle of the first. This cycle tends to bring me down, it just brings me frustration and makes me disappointed in myself; wishing I could read like I used to as a kid.

After years of failed attempts to bring back my reading spark I finally developed the following structure.

At any point in time I will have a rotation of four book I'm reading at once (I know it sounds like a lot but stay with me). Each book will be part of the following categories:

Fiction

Self-help/spiritual

Classic

Non-fiction

This list helps me reach all my reading goals. I get to enjoy my fantasy books, while also broadening my horizons with classics, non-fiction, and self-help. I find that when I set myself to reading just one book at a time the non-fiction and self-help books will get neglected, but if I read only one of those at a time i'll experience fomo for some dramatic fantasy. This eliminates that issue for me. If I start to become bored or feel fomo I can just switch to a different category to fill that void.

My current reading cycle is:

I know this isn't revolutionary but this small change completely altered how I enjoy reading as an adult. I hope it can help someone as much as it helped me :)

Diary Entry 1/3/25

Im working out and training myself so I can apply to become a firefighter and I wanted to share something that made me feel really proud of myself.

While my strength has been coming along well my cardio levels are lower than I would like. In order to improve myself I have been integrating a lot more cardio into my routine. My plan is to do the beep test in the mornings in place of my morning jog and aim to improve my score by .1 each time. Not long ago I could only get to 2.3 (not much I know) but today I got to 2.5 pretty easily! This is the start of a great journey!

Diary of an aspiring Firefighter

Today was mildly productive. I need to remember resting my body makes me stronger

Woke up at 7:30 because my partner had to leave for work

Spent some time milling about and tidying my room before I went out for a walk

I practised the beep test, I got to 2.7 which was my goal (I plan to get .1 better everyday)

Spent some time playing the sims as my body hurt quite a lot from the gym the day before

Joined a teams call to learn about various graduate programs for the degree I'm completing (always need a plan B)

Went to the gym with the loml

Had dinner and had a cuddle before I left for my overnight shift

Everyday I get closer to my goal. Each day I can feel my body get stronger, each day I feel a renewed sense of motivation. I know the road to become a firefighter will be long and hard but I can get there

As a kid I used to play Animal Crossing: Wild World. I loved that game so much (still do) and have so many memories play it every single night. For my entire childhood Bella was my ABSOLUTE best friend, we reached all the milestones together. I feel so happy and emotional that over 10 years later she has moved into my New Leaf town. Time for us to rekindle our never-ending friendship.
