From super Mario 64’s big boo haunt to the horrific Baker Homestead (which does inf act have a ghost) the haunted house is a common level type in games. Hope your ready to get shivers and spooks, lets take a look at some haunted houses in video games.
Luigi’s Mansion

Strange House - Pokemon Black and White 2
When you hear Pokemon, what do you think about? Did you say the mysterious death of a family? No? Well why not? The strange house is a long-abandoned house that is haunted by the spirit of a young girl. Said girl is also supposedly responsible for the haunting on a bridge as well. While the cause for her death, and the presumed deaths of her Abra and her parents is unknown, there are heavy implications set in place. There is some creepy text about Hypno, Drowzee and Darkrai, and the lunar wing can be found here… Given the circumstances, it is implied that one of those pokemon, most likely a rogue Darkrai, killed the family. By the time you arrive, all that’s left is ghost.

The House – PT
Oh you thought we were done with dead families? Nope! Perhaps one of the most controversial video game cancellations of all time, PT will be remembered as the potential magnum opus of Silent Hill. While the Demo literally only consist of a small hallway looped over and over, the vicious hauntings will keep you on edge. The mother of a murdered family wanders the halls, the very fabric of reality breaks apart as you further descend into the loop… Oh and there is a talking fetus in the sink.

Barrow’s Mansion - Clock Tower
A horribly haunted mansion in Norway. Barrow’s mansion is home to none other than the Barrow’s family. This family guises as a kind family but are in reality a sinister clan of demented killers. An orphan girl must run to survive the horrors of the mansion. Horrors ranging from bleeding portraits, strangling mirrors and of course, the scissor man. With seemingly nobody able to help her, she must outsmart and outrun the members of the Barrow’s family until the final confrontation in the titular clock tower.

Matt Helms House - No More Heroes 2
This is the last dead family house on the list. This small ruined home is the home to one of the many assassin’s Travis has to fight in No More Heroes 2. Matt Helms murdered his parents some time ago and has been living in their house ever since…well living is a stretch. The flamethrower wielding psychopath may already be dead by the time Travis pays him a visit. The house is desolate and decaying, and seems to hold a powerful presence, because even after being killed, Matt continues to pester Travis as a ghostly child. The house is eventually burnt down and the ghost is supposedly destroyed.

Decreto Manor - Alone in the Dark
Decreto Manor is a 19th century manor constructed in the state of Louisiana. The Manor was built with dark intentions and was home to the practices of dark magic. Many years later the house lies abandoned and is riddled with rumors over its dark origins and powers. The reason behind the main characters entering the mansion differ, but their goal is the same, escape. The Manor is crawling with demons, zombies and other monsters and has a somewhat eldritch vibe to it. This mansion is significant as it is the setting of one of the first survival horror games. Not the first mind you, but one of the first.

Spooky’s Jumpscare Mansion
A mansion so massive that it has 1000 rooms. Spooky’s mansion seems cute and innocent at first. Home to a somewhat silly ghost named Spooky. However, after exploring some rooms, the house is revealed to be MUCH more sinister. A plethora of supernatural entities haunt the halls and will chase the player relentlessly. These entities include a slime monster, a giant bug, an alien parasite, a cursed puppet, some demons and otherworldly creatures and many more horrors. The mansion is so large a full school and a burger restaurant are found within its halls. This is a mansion that, despite its innocent appearance, is not for the faint of heart.

West Mansion – Splatterhouse
West Mansion is the place where both the original and Reboot Splatterhouse takes place. A mansion owned by a mad scientist and prowling with monsters. Rick, a normal man must put on a mask in order ti survive and save his girl. The mask turns him into a hulking killing machine. The house has a plethora of gross and nasty monsters prowling the halls waiting to feed. Rick will punch and obliterate any creature in his path, even if they are ghost. The house turns out to be alive and possibly rooted into hell itself. It has a heart, so guess how the house is ultimately destroyed? I am pretty sure you can figure that one out…

Mad Monster Mansion - Banjo Kazooie
This mansion is one of the most famous levels of Banjo Kazooie. A haunted area that is home to the manor itself, a graveyard, a hedge maze and a church. In the church a ghost plays an organ and challenges you to follow his lead. The mansion itself seems to be much bigger that Banjo when it comes to furniture, with the rooms being massive. A dining room, bedroom, bathroom and a cellar are laid out to explore within its walls. A well can be explored as well, get it? Anyway, this is a nice and spooky themed level that gives off the quality creepy yet playful Halloween vibe.

Mann Manor – TF2
Mann Manor is a Halloween inspired map in TF2. The mansion of Redmond Mann is home to some spooky entities. Creatures seem to hide under the floorboards and lurk in the darkness. A monster called the horseless headless horseman prowls the grounds and attacks anyone it sees. Oh, and there are two mercenary teams fighting for control over the area. This is a creepy mansion that sees a lot of action, both normal and paranormal.

Scream TV – Gex 2 Enter the Gecko
Scream TV is a homage to the various horror tropes found in film. It takes the form of a mansion and a castle full of classic and modern horror themed characters and decorations. The walls move on their own, portraits stare you down, big suits of armor try to smash you with their weapons. The main collectable is skulls. Enemies include ghost, pumpkins and slasher killers, yep, zombie slasher killers. The level is riddled with direct references to horror movies such as Hellraiser and the Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
