I love LOK, but one of the things that bothers me is that it relies very heavily on a trope I dislike a lot, though in a way that usually makes the characters involved more interesting.

It’s basically: the villain has the right idea, but goes Too Far. 

Part of the reason that I dislike the trope is that in general, while there are vague gestures in the direction of acknowledging the villain’s point, the emphasis is overwhelmingly on the Too Far—and in fact, usually follows it up with even more (often baffling and counterproductive) villainy to move the focus to taking them down rather than addressing the fundamental problems driving them.

This!!! I love Barty and Regulus as much as the next person but I am so sick of Regulus being portrayed as the smartest man alive while Barty can't tie his shoelaces...

This guy is the reason GoF happened, perfect impersonator, strong wizard despite years of imprisonment (so strong he was able to trick one of the most powerful objects in-universe and successfully do all magic Moody - one of the strongest aurors could) and a master manipulator

He is literally the polar opposite of the idiot the fandom portrays him as.

Friendly reminder that Barty literally got 12 O.W.L.s so who tf came up with the idea of portraying him as a stupid dumbass? /nm
