At the advice of my gf I tried reorganizing my story to reveal that one of the major characters gets killed off at some point. It had me so worried at first because I was so used to character deaths being some major twist or something. I was worried that it'd feel weird, that it'd struggle to build emotional weight around it, or that it'd keep people from wanting to get attached. Maybe I'm just used to a character death meaning that they stop being around, and stop influencing the story. Now I'm realizing how many opportunities it gives when you properly incorporate something like that from the very beginning. Gonna have fun twisting that knife for a while.
