holy shit, i cannot put into words how much i needed to hear this, hoping me sharing this helps it reach others who also need this

yesterday when working with my case manager, she went through a long checklist of my comprehensive needs to refresh our treatment plan. as a part of the questions she was asking me, she asked for various areas of my financial struggles, including if i was able to afford social activities such as hanging out with friends, going to the movies, etc. as part of my necessary purchases. the question was specifically phrased as "Do you have enough money every month to be able to afford social activities?"

this was not proposed as a "luxury". the question was not phrased as "Do you have enough money every month to afford luxuries/luxury purchases?" this was listed with the necessities like food, housing, medical needs, transportation, bills, and clothing. this made me burst into tears when i realized it was considered a necessary part of everyone's mental and well being. my case manager told me that not a singular person on this planet deserves to have to "earn" the right to socialize, interact with leisure activities, or to do things that bring you personal fulfillment. your money does not, and should not entirely go toward survival and practicality. it will ruin your mental health.

to any poor person who has ever been told that they don't "need" or "deserve" social or leisure activities or that your money "needs" to go 100% toward survival: they are straight up lying to you. it is a fundamental part of your mental health. don't fucking listen to them.

Nobody deserves to get shot.

People should NOT have to be ideal fucking citizens in order to not get fucking murdered by the fucking police. The can be petty thieves and addicts who don't contribute to society and STILL should be fucking murdered by the police because that's what it's supposed to mean to live in a free fucking country. The justice system is supposed to protect the lives and rights of all citizens. Not just citizens who adhere to the law. We have all these laws about due process and fair punishment so that people who have committed crimes still get to live.

Why do we overlook this whenever criminals are killed by a cop. Where is the punishment for cops who steal those rights. Yes, if a criminal is armed and attacking the police, that's self defense. but there are plenty of cases of unarmed criminals being killed, and the murderer getting away with little or no punishment. Why are these murders somehow rationalized by the victim's criminal record? Last time I checked, the vast majority of crimes don't have death sentences attached, and the ones that are still get a trial. Why aren't cops punished for taking away these rights. Why aren't these cases treated like the murders that they are.

When cops kill, the only thing they need to escape punishment is a flimsy "I thought they were armed." or "they robbed a bank with a gun last week." Why is this allowed. How can people benefit from due process and fair sentencing when that can be stolen by the whim of a trigger happy cop.

Police brutality against innocents wouldn't be such a problem if police brutality against the guilty was adequately punished. If criminals and suspected criminals were treated the same way anybody else is, we would not have to be scared of the police.

When criminals do not have their rights enforced, then all that's needed to take away a person's rights is to label them as a criminal. The moment anyone's rights are taken away is the moment everyone's rights are no longer guaranteed.
