- filter your searches like you would on a library website or in an online catalogue
- don’t post placeholders, fic searches, or recommendations as fics. DON’T! It’s against ao3 TOS
- there is no algorithm. ao3 sorts by date posted/updated unless you filter with specific search criteria
- ao3 is a non profit. that means it doesn’t sell ads to make money — it only survives on donations. this is why it can show you so many fics without ever flashing an ad or pop up at you!
- report fics that break TOS when you see them (I.e., placeholder fics, searches) to help other users navigate better
- the tag “dead dove, do not eat” doesn’t equate to gore/awfulness automatically. it is a complementary tag that enhances current tags. E.g., if the fic is tagged “gore” and “dead dove, do not eat” the author really wants you to mind the gore tag
- most fandoms have a variation of “no beta, we die like (x character)” and they all link back to the “No beta” tag
- publishing a new fic sometimes means it won’t show up in the fandom/pairing tag for a few minutes
- subscribers receive update emails at different times, depending on when you update/publish your fic. there’s no good way to predict when an e-mail will be sent — it can be in 30 seconds, or two hours later
- some fics are restricted by authors to those with ao3 accounts only. if you see a blue lock in the upper right corner, that fic is only visible to logged in ao3 users
- you can block commenters now! this didn’t use to be a thing
- updating a fic just to stay at the top of the pairing tag/fandom tag is a dick move. unless you’re legitimately editing or adding chapters, this just annoys readers and fellow authors, and people will skip over your fic
oh when I tell you I need all of these [x]
I actually love the concept that being your authentic self will scare away the people who aren't meant to be near you.

Would it kill you people to acknowledge non-binary and genderqueer people?
Would it kill you to remember that the terms transmasculine and transfeminine are not synonymous with binary trans men and binary trans women?
Would it kill you to remember that there are those who are not transmasculine and face the same issues as transmasculine people and that there are those who are not transfeminine but face the same issues as transfeminine people?
Would it kill you to add even a token acknowledgment of non-binary and genderqueer people when you talk about trans issues in a needlessly and harmfully binary way?
Would it fucking kill you to stop and think about us for a single moment?
When I was a (unmedicated, undiagnosed ADHD) kid, like, under 12, my room was a mess all the time. Not shocking.
I struggled keeping it clean.
I struggled getting it clean.
I would sincerely put in quite a bit of effort and be really proud of the progress I made. Then one of my parents would come check and see how I was doing.
"Well, you've still got a long way to go."
That sentence. I was like, 11 when my parents were saying that to me. It was crushing. All my pride and satisfaction with my work was completely gone. All my effort was worthless to them. All they saw what everything I didn't do.
At the age of ELEVEN, I knew that wasn't right. That wasn't fair. I swore to myself I would never invalidate someone's work like that.
Now, at 30, I catch myself thinking 'I cleaned up, but my apartment is still so messy.' and I flashback to standing in my bedroom as a child, hearing those fucking words from my parents.
'No. I wouldn't invalidate someone else's work. I'm not going to invalidate my own. I did good. I made progress.' and I'll list the things that I DID get done to myself.
You deserve credit for all the progress you make.
You deserve credit for all the work you do.
It doesn't matter how much work you have left.
What you accomplish, no matter how small, counts. Even when what you accomplished was taking a day to rest and recharge and give yourself a break.
Never let anyone invalidate your work. Not even you.
I'm not quite sure how I got to the House MD (? I guess?) fandom tumblr, but I must say, the posts are funny and intriguing, I may have to consider watching the show
Chase: So.. do you think Dr. House and Dr. Wilson are shagging?
Cameron: What? No. Why would you possibly think that?
Chase: Well, back in college, I had this mate who fancied me, and well... the way he looked at me... I just think there's something going on between them. You really don't think?
Cameron: Dr. House doesn't have the capacity for emotion required for that level of intimacy.
(they both turn to FOREMAN, asking him to settle the debate)
Foreman: This is unprofessional. But fine... I think Dr. House probably has some lingering feelings for Dr. Wilson, but he'd never cheat on his wife. Especially not for Dr. House
(HOUSE and WILSON walk in, clearly having overheard)
House: He would absolutely cheat on his wife for me.
Wilson, indignant: Come on, cheat on my - cheat? The only time we were together was between my marriages -
(pregnant pause, as all realize the implication. CUDDY enters.)
Cuddy: We have a 10 year old dying of the dancing plague right now.
bro she didn’t “let you smash” she was an active participant in the mutual smashing process
Pepsi distributed Dr Pepper (on the left) And Coca-Cola distributed Dr Pepper (on the right). Dr. Pepper isn’t owned by either company, it is it’s own company Keurig Doctor Pepper, BUT they don’t have a bottling facility. In an area, they use whichever bottling facility gives them the best deal. That’s why sometimes it’s Pepsi shaped and sometimes it’s Coke shaped.
